So I was prying open my PSP (fat) battery rather agitatedly when the flat head microdriver I was using stabbed into the side of it and caused fascinating phenomena to occur. There was blue smoke that smelled of ozone which spewed from the point of entry and from the diodes, and a small glowing yellow-white spark that melted the tiniest hole in the plastics.
It still sits in my garage retaining its warmth. I do mean warm too. Like really fucking warm. Like "this might end badly" warm. My question is twofold. Just how dumb was that idea? And two...what is the proper way to dispose of a potentially explosive and medium rare cooked PSP battery. It's one of the 1800 mha(?)/3.6v kinds.
On another note I've ordered one of the 10$ "Tool" batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries can rupture, ignite, or explode when exposed to high temperature environments, for example in an area that is prone to prolonged direct sunlight. Short-circuiting a Li-ion battery can cause it to ignite or explode, and as such, any attempt to open or modify a Li-ion battery's casing or circuitry is dangerous. Li-ion batteries contain safety devices that protect the cells inside from abuse, and, if damaged, can cause the battery to ignite or explode.
pretty damn stupid.
keep it in a protected place where if it explodes or ignites it wont cause a fire or further damage.

1. Pretty dumb given the cost of the premodded "Tool" batteries. But hey, you've learned, right? Right? You're not going to try this again? :P
2. You know all that "flaming battery" shit that was going around before? Yeah, that's a lithium fire. You may have been on the edge of causing one. I'd take it to your local hazardous waste depot, preferably contained in something thick and metallic.
Side note - if it does flare up, I'd wager you don't have any LithX or copper powder around to extinguish it. Your only option at that point is to let it burn out, or to apply copious amounts of water from a distance. You don't want to be breathing the fumes either.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

Geez. Well if it hasn't burn't down the garage yet I don't think we're in immediate danger.
Will I try it again? Sometime later...I tried knowing how cheap the pre-made ones were because I love to tinker...recklessly sometimes as you can tell. I suppose next time I'll listen to those quiet nagging doubts and either buy the pre-made thing or use a ceramic or plastic object to open the seal. I learned a lesson, yes, but that won't stop from ever doing adventurous things (within reason).
Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure where our local hazard depot is, but I might make an effort to find it before trash day. Ick. Not sure I want to reach in after it though.
After he got home he let it cool on the air conditioner register and that sucker stayed too hot to touch for a good day or two. The insane part? Two years later I say I'll take it off his hands even if it doesn't work and we plug it into the wall with the charger because I insisted (he said there was no way in hell it still worked) and ...holy shit it worked! He didn't sell it to me...
Not everybody I know has a PSP and I live about 2-3 hrs away from almost all of my friends so thats kinda difficult. I love hard modding things though so that's why I did it. Like I said I ordered one of the premade ones online, and if I'm still feeling adventurous when I get a spare battery I might try it again...10x more carefully this time.
Also if you get a PSP that has firmware 3.51 or higher on it, you have to use a Pandora battery to reload it. My roommate bought a secondhand PSP where the original owner had updated it all the way and we had to get a $10 Tool battery. The process was very simple though and only required the one PSP and a Windows XP computer to load the stick.
Yeah mine was used from Gamestop too. Got it for a cool $130 in near perfect condition. It has 3.51 on it so I think I'll need one anyway. I tend to overlook things when tweaking and modding (hence the battery) so a Tool is a good idea for me in the event I accidentally brick it. Looking to get it to 1.50 or a custom for.....uh...cool homebrew software.
Except for ripping your old playstation discs into PSP images. And being able to stream video media off of your computer to your PSP. Or using DOSBox to play all of you old dos games.

1. I don't own any PSX games.
2. Why watch video on the tiny PSP screen when you could, y'know watch it on the actual computer?
3. Who still has DOS games, or better yet the floppy drive with which to get them from? Not to mention the hilarity of using such an advanced piece of hardware to play 20 year old games.

All lame examples so far. Keep trying.
SNES r*** and such. I consider it worth it because the control layout is pretty much identical.
I never knew about being able to make images of old PSX games into images for the PSP. Portablizing a few of my old favorites is actually an attractive prospect.

Wow, really? That was your response? Ok, I'm done talking in this thread.

So basically you're telling me that the only purpose for hacking your PSP is for illegal reason?
I'm going to side with maximumzero here, and I actually had a modded PSP.
My first fat PSP I modded with the Lumines trick. I barely ever used any of the benefits it brought me, all the homebrew was crap and unpolished. So throw original programs right out the window. As for playing PSX games, well, I can leave a disc in my PS3, and remote play them that way. And yes, I did play Silent Hill 1 on my modded PSP with the ISO, while fun, it still isn't worth the trouble of modding.
Then I picked up a slim PSP and never bothered modding it. And not once since their launch have I thought about it again, I've yet to see a worthwhile reason.
I also prefer having things updated all the time. It's a compulsion, maybe. I prefer to stick with the official upgrades.
Anyways, if you discount roms, I don't see a single reason for a modded PSP. Can someone enlighten me, what did I miss the first time around?

I guess if you don't leave your house the luster of a modded PSP wears off but I guess the fact that I play my PSX games on a regular basis clouds my judgment.

I guess he's just dead inside if he doesn't see the appeal in having "PSP" stand for "PlayStation Portable" in a more literal definition.
That or he never leaves his basement.

Hi5! I don't use either.
