External hard drive got knocked off the desk in the middle of my NWN2 game last night. Lots of terrible noises, as expected. I was still able to sort of access it. Computer was able to locate the nwn2 files on the drive, but the whole machine locked up when I tried to load a saved game.
This morning, no bad noises, but absolutely no access to the drive. Incorrect function error when I try to get it in explorer. Can't see any of my shortcuts or anything.
Fubar or are their any tricks I can try? Google didn't give me anything but CD/DVD drive stuff. Please help end the tedium of my surgical convalescence and save Neverwinter!
I would imagine that the drive is dead. Knocking it off of a desk is usually a killing blow for drives. Is there anything super important that you need off of the drive? I know there are programs that can help get stuff off of a dying/dead drive, but I have no idea how they work or how reliable they are.
If you really need to get something off the drive put it in the freezer for 10 minutes, once cold you get a couple of minutes to transfer files. I have done this a couple of times works with hard disk iPods and hard drives. It may not work if the platter is scratched too much but it's worth a shot.
