The Best Way to Use a Ps2 ona 1080HD

edited September 2008 in Games and Technology
Okay so I have an 1080 32HD. The 360 looks great, but trying to play ps2 games on there kind've sucks. Playing standard dvd movies on the 360 looks pretty good, but the ps2 looks like garbage. Whats the best way to make them look as good as possible (Yeah yeah I know ps2 not known for graphics, but still I'd like to play God of War or Okami and not think I'm looking at it through a gauze filter).

So any suggestions, on PS3 (which I have yet to own) or set it widescreen, don't set it widescreen, whatever it is that makes it look the least shitty, let me know.

Thanks

Unfortunately, running component cables and running the game in progressive scan (if it supports it) is as good as you're going to get.

Get an old television that doesn't do high-def, get some S-Video or A/V cables, and hook the PS2 up to that TV. That's about your only option because PS2 games just look terrible on a good TV. You can also just try to sit as far away as possible. The farther away you are from the TV, the better a PS2 game will look.

Seriously though, get a sucky TV.

I've got a 50" 1080p and I play PS2 games via my PS3. They actually look pretty good. I have it set to widescreen and the smoothing option on, and they don't look like shit. They also don't look stretched out, either, even though that's what it's doing. As far as an upscaler goes, the PS3 does an admirable job at it.

if its anything like my 47 inch 1080p TV there should be a format button so you can cycle through aspect ratios. . . setting it to 4:3 makes my PS2 look less stretched. . . YMMV

except by then sony will have gone a little nuts with the BC removal and will no longer be able to play the first and second wave of PS3 games in addition to the whole library of PS2 games.

Okami still looks like shit, even on the PS3. The smoothing seems to make it look worse.

I'll echo the earlier comments - an older TV, with s-video or (if available) component connection.

Yea the PS3s with software emulation did a great job on some triple A titles man.
Even fixes the frame rate problems on SotC.

Get component cables, run in 480p if possible, and set to widescreen if the game supports it (and set your TV to 4:3 if the game doesn't support it).

    That's all you can do.

Don't get an old SDTV, though, that's retarded. I mean, it's not going to look any worse on your good TV, seriously.

    This.

My PS2 games look like Youtube videos on a big widescreen TV, but still look alright on the 27" CRT that I bought ages ago along with my first DVD player.

Yeah, I hate this. My PS2 feels utterly obsolete. There's very little to do if you're European, considering they stopped manufacturing the backwards compatible PS3s a long time ago.

It's been said many times, but an SD television with Component or SCART cables is your best bet. PS2 looks terrible on an HDTV, and PS3 emulation does very little to fix that (unless you call running a jagged picture through a 2xSai filter an improvement).

+1 to the Suck It Up And Deal With It Crew.

Buy the component cables and hope your games are 480p-capable.

I would say the best way would be to use it to maybe make the screen sit a little higher on whatever surface you had your screen on.

This suggestion is quite sound, but I do strongly object to the way it's put.

PS2 games look great on HDTVs that aren't cutting corners, for instance a 1080i tube, or one with a proper scaler box/internal scaler.

LCD TVs basically crap all over SD because most people aren't going to care, and so the manufacturers don't either. It cuts costs and also helps sell Joe & Jane Shmoe on HD when SD looks like utter garbage. Since LCDs can't change from their native resolution, they have to scale the lower-resolution images up. Since the only ways to do this properly are hundreds-of-dollars expensive, they don't; it gets done as cheaply as possible. This creates the video artifacts and image latency which make it look worse than it really is.

A backward-compatible model of PS3 does a good job upconverting, but costs even more than a good upscaler. If you're eager to spend hundreds of dollars, PS3's probably a better overall buy for gaming and media utility. Very few LCD HDTVs were built with good upscaling. These are typically older & expensive models, since expensive, less-demanded features are naturally the first to go in the process of streamlining production.

I'd like to offer a different take: People want slim-factor LCD HDTVs now, and don't want to haul their old TVs to the dump. They're selling their high-quality tubes (sometimes 720p or 1080i HD-capable) CHEAP in local newspaper and craigslist ads. It's possible to pick up a great SDTV for $200 or so, just do it quickly before everyone finishes offloading their old televisions.

Anyway, welcome to consumer minority hell. Do enjoy your stay.

Does anyone know how the PS3 does its upscaling with the Emotion Engine? Do all the games still run okay even if it makes some look uglier? Just curious how compatible the old method was (if there is one, even, I have no idea).

Also is there still anyway to get PS3s with the Emotion Engine aside from used consoles?

MGS4 Bundle. Careful; there are two types. The one that has a normal-looking PS3 in it is BC, while the one with a special-colored shell does not, I believe.

He's talking about the true hardware emulation PS3s - the 20GB/60GB models, I believe. (I've got that right, right? Original had the full EE+GS, 80GB emulates the EE but still has hardware GS?)

No way to get them without buying used, and I think it does the same upscaling method.
