[LET'S wish we were PLAYing] Fez

Whilst searching Youtube for Cave Story videos, I came upon this:

Fez

This is the first I've seen of this game, and I already want to play it badly. I know next to nothing about it, but I did find an interview with the lead designer and a preview.

Yeah, I remember seeing videos of this a few months ago. I think it was shown at the GDC. It blew me away. I have a feeling it's going to be a while before it gets released though -- just a hunch.

Great design. Horrible visual style. I'm really not feeling the retro pixel thing. But I mean the 2d/3d thing is amazing.

Makes me think of the 2d-3d mechanic from Super Paper Mario. That seems like a fun idea to try in a regular platformer rather than an action-RPG-platformer thing like SPM was.

Also, kind of like the art style.

Reminds of a good mesh of Super Paper Mario and Monochrome. Definitely looks like it could be good enough to follow.

The preview said it will be coming out on the 360? Shame for me. I really need to pick up one of those blasted things just for the arcade.

I'm reading the interview I linked to and came upon this gem:
    Phil Fish wrote:
So many games take themselves so horribly seriously, and are in fact pretty much always fucking ridiculous. Some badass, probably bald dude taking down a helicopter by throwing a shark at it while delivering the cheesiest one-liner you've heard all day, and all this in the most serious fashion imaginable. "Guess you've jumped the shark, uh?" EXPLOSION.

When I finished Portal I was simply blown away. I was sitting there, with tears in my eyes (from laughing so much), thinking, "this has got to be one of the best games ever! Because it's just so smart! Because its just so FUNNY." The game was genuinely funny. All my nerdy comedy friends and I keep quoting the fuck out of that game. It's brilliant.

Of course a game with a visual style like this wouldn't be serious, but I love that first paragraph.

It actually gives me a vibe similar to what Super Mario Galaxy did when I first played it, what with suddenly having this new aspect of existance thrown at you in a genre/style that's rarely/never had it and trying to wrap your head around the whole thing.

I just hope we're not going to have to use the rotating cam for every single jump lest we risk divebombing because the platform we're aiming for happens to be deeper/more shallow than we think.

Wow, this is the first video of it I've watched and it looks pretty goddamn cool. I really think some of the platforming is going to hurt my brain so much but it'll be awesome. That and I love the visual and audio style of the game, the whole pixelated 2D/3D thing is cool.

They actually made it Engrish on purpose because they thought it was funny. In fact, in one comment I read a person mentioned that a previous teaser they had seen had the text in perfect English.

So, I was going to enter this thread and toss out some smarmy comment about how it seems like every arty game is named Fez nowadays.
Then I realized the other one's called "Rez".

First thing I thought of was Echochrome as well. The concepts appear to be nearly the same, though this one looks like it might offer a bit more freedom / replay value.

And wasn't Echochrome already in 3D?

It is rendered in 2d but the perspective gives the effect of 3d. It doesnt have polygons or anything.

It seems a whole bunch of people came up with the same kind of idea at the same time. As well as Paper Mario and Echochrome, there's been Kuju's Crush:

maybe Fez will turn out to be the 'Braid' of perspective-trick games. The visual style is already a winner.

I've thought about this game off and on for a while.

Cave Story + Super Paper Mario.

Nice and all, but it will need to make sure to not come off as just a rip off.

Well, apparently the lead designer hated Super Paper Mario, and had never even heard of Crush before he started Fez.

Also, I don't see how it could possibly be a Cave Story rip-off. They have a similar visual style, but look to play nothing alike.

Ehh, not really. Fez is more simplistic, and has smoother animations for the main character. Or do all white-skinned protagonists look the same to you emosternwx8.png

I did get a bit of a Cave Story vibe from the video in the OP, not that I care too much about whether it feels like a ripoff. Golden Axe Warrior on the Master System was the most shameless Zelda clone I've ever seen and it was still fun.

Do want. On any system that's not a 360.
