What blows my mind about this; what shatters any belief I have in the American public at large, is the fact that so many people are willing to vote for people who lie to their faces. Just flat-out LIE right to them. It's not like the refutations aren't out there, either. In fact, show the McCain/Palin voters a big sheet listing every single thing they've lied about right to their faces and they still say they're voting for them.

When did Americans become so WEAK in character and conviction that they're not only willing to forgive a group of pathological liars, they're willing to put their futures into those very liars' HANDS as a reward for their lies?

    It just boggles my mind.

So... 538 now has McCain past the 50% mark. Is this a first?

(The electoral votes come out with both under 270, win percentage is 48-52)

Oh, yes. I think it's that time when we start bringing up early voting. It's about ten days until the first states that allow it fire up the booths.

It's a state-by-state basis as to whether you can do it in your state, but if you're getting called over and over, the quickest way to get them to stop (barring any volunteering calls from your side) is to vote early. They will take you out of the call list like that. (Though there is something to be said for letting your opponent THINK you haven't voted yet so they waste their resources continuing to call you.) It allows your side to focus on people yet to vote.

Here's the complete list of early-voting laws, should you wish to do so.

So I've just seen 2 anti-obama adds. I live in California (saw them at 9:00-10:00pm during mythbusters commercial breaks).

I havent really seen any political adds prior to this. Why would McCain be advertising in California?

True, a working mom who starts at the PTA, then eventually becomes elected mayor of a small town, and finally governor of a state with borders to two foreign countries isn't in line with modern feminism. Thank goodness she didn't take on corruption in her own party and bring down the good ole boys in her state. Even more wonderful is that she clearly is more of the same old, same old Washington pork politics. Heaven forbid she become nominee for VP of one of the two major parties in the USA. That would lay to utter waste the entire works of feminism that have been so laboriously raised over the centuries. A woman who has achieved that much can only be a threat to modern women and all they stand for.

ETA: To the guy in CA who saw McCain ads; county wise, IIRC, the majority of CA is red. Back in the '80s CA helped elect Reagan to the presidency. What I can't remember is if the gap was widening or narrowing in the '00 and '04 elections in CA. I know that in CO it has been.

Take a deep breath everybody; it's going to be ok. McCain has his post convention bounce, plus the still novel VP pick.

I don't think the Obama campaign really knew how to respond to Palin; but they'll settle soon enough. We've got four big debates coming up. Palin still has yet to talk to the media (I'm pretty sure the Gibson interview is going to be a fucking puff piece).

I think the most important thing to realize is this; McCain is blowing his negativity wad early. People are going to sour on this shit real quck if he keeps up this pace. The debates are going to obviously be issue driven; and this is the Dem advantage.

McCain seems to be campaining almost exclusively with Palin now...she's a fucking gimmick. My brain can't handle the most important election of my lifetime being swayed by a gimmick; and I don't think it will be.

I'm aware CA voted for Reagan, if you'll recall, he was a governor there (and every state but Minnesota voted for him in 84, so not really a good point). However if your suggesting that you think McCain could tip CA in 2 months, thats a rather ludicrous statement. It would be like suggesting that the Dems could tip Utah or Mississippi to blue in all of 2 months.

Suggesting that, say, twelve years down the road a very gradual shift over time could swing CA back the other way. *shrug* It was that way once, it may be that way again.

Earlier today (or yesterday) I said the same thing wondering why they were airing McCain ads here in CA, then I remembered the feed I'm getting is for CO which is a battleground state this year.
Take a deep breath everybody; it's going to be ok. McCain has his post convention bounce, plus the still novel VP pick.

Agreed that McCain's VP pick is quit interesting, perhaps even more so than Obama's. I can only hope Biden will bring change.

Unfortunately I'm not sure Obama will shine during the debates, he has a habit of pausing with "uhms and ahhs" while speaking off the cuff. The VP debates, well, Biden is known as an attack dog and attacking a woman is likely to play poorly.

At any rate, here's an interesting question for the "man on the street": What has Barack Obama done during his campaign that you think is indicative of his lack of experience?

I wonder if you'd get any good answers instead of the canned "he doesn't have any experience". Even if he was a pimply faced teenager fresh out of high school, at some point you have to say "okay, maybe he's just really good at this, prior experience or not."
