Mozilla stuff acting up, freezing/stuttering

Ok a recent issue has popped up and its driving me mad.

currently use thunderbird (version 2.0.0.16 (20080708)) and firefox (3.0.1)

lately when i click on a message in my inbox, the entire world of my computer freezes. i can't switch out to anything. it roughly takes 1.5 minutes to load a message and get control of the system versus the seconds it used to take

this only really affects my main inbox. i also use thunderbird to download my 2 gmail accounts and there is nothing wrong with them

i had a lot of messages in there so i tried moving them to an archive folder, as well as compacting folders, but nothing works to improve the load times.. no new extensions have been added

recently installed adobe illustrator (since removed), and logitech setpoint,

i am currently in the process of scanning for malware and viruses but it takes forever.

am running xp pro service pack 2 and i have 2gb of ram

any help would be appreciated
