I have heard both good and terrible things about the show. I have yet to actually watch it owing to an existing backlog of must-sees, but I've been considering giving this a gander.

I'll show you how terrible it can be.
This will spoil the entire first season for you though, so only look if you don't particularly care.
Dexter saw his mum get killed when he was an infant. It basically warps him, and he has urges to kill, and becomes a psychopath. His dad helps him control the urges, and Dexter decides to kill bad people. Dexter, I should mention also has a sister via adoption.
So fast forward to modern day, there's a serial killer on the loose. Dexter's sister (also a cop) starts dating some dude.
Turns out her boyfriend is the serial killer and... HE'S DEXTER'S LONG LOST BROTHER THAT IS NOW ALSO A SERIAL KILLER.
The most horrible, tritest shit I've ever seen. I mean, I just reread my post and I laughed because it's so bad.

Well its not as if they start dating by accident. The brother is stalking dexter, and his sister, so he chooses to pursue her, to get close to Dexter. Shes easily manipulated and he pretty much sweeps her off her feet because he knows exactly what she wants, via the stalking.
Tho I agree the show is off and on. Its a bit too perfect, and not really as deep as it should be. Still fun though.
I'll admit the ending of the first season is pretty ridiculous, and the some of the second was pretty bad as well
but damn if this show doesn't have great acting and clever writing that keeps it incredibly entertaining
I'm hoping that they'll just take off with it in a new direction now that they've ditched the book series it was based on entirely. Season 1 was mostly a direct adaptation, Season 2 added it's own elements but still kept some of the major plot points, and now Season 3 is just ignoring the awful third book all together. They have some great characters to work with if they decided to get someone to write a decent story arc.
Both season endings were pretty ridiculous, season 2 especially felt like it could have had a better ending. Which isn't to say the outcome would have been different, just executed better.

well, here's some book vs. series clarifications on why it ended up like it did
Lila was an awful character that wasn't in the book and I wish they hadn't added. But they used her as an influence on Dexter's behavior instead of the books "Dark Passenger" subplot, which is fucking terrible and dumb and leads to the third book's stupid "Dexter is driven to kill by an ancient unstoppable evil diety" explanation. The series did it better in concept, since a person influencing him is far better than a mythical force, but Lila was just so fucking grating.
And as far as the lame brother thing in Season 1, it played out a lot better in the book. There was this whole conflict about the brother heavily resembling Dexter, and Dexter thinking that he might be the ice truck killer, and I don't know it just made more sense. The show kind of established their relationship differently and then at the end was like "AHA, THEY'RE BROTHERS!" but at that point it didn't even matter and really did nothing for either character.
tl;dr blame the bad plot points on the books, and they really could have been worse if they stuck with Jeff Lindsay's crappy fantasy plot.

The show is pretty contrived though.
Everyone has access to Netflix for a fairly minimal amount, though.
ahem
oh okay, there we go
8-)

this show is a must watch
thank god in heaven they don't seem to be following the book's plots after the first season.
does it get any less obvious or bowel-clenchingly boring
did they save all the good stuff for episode 5
Man, its the first good episode.
And every episode after that is twice as good as the one before it.
if it sucks though, if this is some 'make bonk watch bad tv' practical joke, i swear to god
edit: fixed spoiler, whoooops.

The previews I saw made it look like he's a pretty hardcore dude versus Dexter.
bullshit with doakes is over

Good to know.
I'll still borrow it from the library.
I don't know, the first one was pretty entertaining despite the cheesiness that I already knew about from the show
I didn't read the 2nd or 3rd though, the plot summaries and peoples warnings were enough to keep me away from them
