Revolutionary Road

Trailer: http://www.leonardodicaprio.com/leonardo/movies/rroad_trl.html

The trailer for Sam Mendes' new film is out, "Revolutionary Road" starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet. Before you sigh "Oh, love story", watch the trailer. It looks like a love story at first, but I think the movie is trying to do something much bigger than that. It's about a couple living in suburban America frustrated with their inability to live out their ideals, going crazy over the so called delusion they are living in. My mom watched the trailer and said, "I think i'll watch this on video... why would I want to see a movie about my life?", and I knew she would say that when I first saw the trailer. I think a lot of families/couples might be able to identify with it (obviously haven't seen the movie yet but I can already see where it's going), or at least the ones who have always hoped for something far outside of the norm, be it living in the mountains or living in foreign places, or achieving artistic success.

You could go watch a movie about how your life is going to be pretty boring and pedestrian as you grow older.

But why watch it when you can live it?

I don't know why everyone who lives in the suburbs is stereotyped as being a bunch of squares who aren't achieving their dreams. Not everyone who lives out here is fucking dead inside.

you can't achieve your dream of living in a cramped overpriced inner-city apartment where you can't own a car because you can't afford parking nor do you have the time to drive it anywhere due to the traffic,

    You don't understand, Bear.

The very idea of "suburb" causes me to cringe. The idea itself is fundamentally wrong in a delightfully vast number of ways if you compare it to the "norms" that were developed over like six thousand years of human social development from the first tels in Mesopotamia to the industrial port-cities. Every time people have tried to manufacture a social setting for a specific purpose it has largely failed, either as an entity itself, or failed to fulfill the original purpose and was restructured accordingly.

It doesn't matter where you live, it's the kind of life you're living. I've lived in the suburbs all my life and I can say i've probably "felt" everything in my life as strongly as I can, and very soon I plan on moving to L.A. to get into film.

I'd rather live in my bumfuck middle of nowhere orchard house in the country where I grew up, or my quiet city neighborhood house where my parents live, or an apartment in downtown, than in a suburb.

    Jesus I hate suburbs.
