Concrete confirmation, I suppose. KOF XII is neither a story game, nor is it a Dream Match. Main characters and throwbacks only. Also negates the need for teams.
Just out of curiosity, why don't you consider this a dream match? I was always under the impression that dream match simply meant non-canon, and if the game doesn't have a story, than it must be non-canon, right?

Simply because it doesn't follow any of the standard conventions of a Dream Match.

- Lot's of characters.
- Return of fan favourite characters who are either dead or have no bearing on current storylines.
- A return of one or more of the older systems.
- Stages full of in-jokes and cameos.
- Takes place between the end of one story arc and the beginning of another.

Simply because XII doesn't really follow any of those general rules. There are only a few characters, and they're all story relevant (except maybe Raiden). The stages look pretty standard so far, and they're introducing new systems instead of brining back old ones (except for going back to tagless 3v3). I suppose it's a little like a Dream Match, but not really like any of the previous ones.

As for non-canon, well the KOF:MI games are non-canon, but I guess that's a slightly different issue.
Yeah, but '98 and 2002 had huge rosters because nearly all of their sprites were old. I would argue that they had lots of characters not because they were dream matches, but because they were NeoGeo games with a wealth of old NeoGeo sprites they could use. Also, 2002 follows '98's conventions so closely simply because it was the most popular and (let's face it) best KOF up until that point. Also, new gameplay systems introduced in '99-2001 weren't widely appreciated. In any case, it's pretty difficult/impossible to establish a pattern with only two official examples.

By the way, KOF:MI is not technically non-canon. It's just a separate canon/alternate universe deal. SNK likes promoting confusion.

Why bother with Ash, Ralf, and Shen Long? I mean, I even like Shen, but blahhh.

Ash should be in because he's the current hero. And Shen would just be in the next one anyways, so they may as well put him in, just like Elizabeth.

And I still think the most important parts of the Dream Matches were the return of old characters and systems. Bringing back Rugal, Mature and Vice, etc.

But it's semantics, really. XII is just a new game, a new base for the series, and it's totally unique for that.

Here's a new gameplay video featuring Raiden. For those who were worried that the clash system would be too game-altering, clashes only occur three times in these three matches.1UP also has several new screenshots.
216.jpg221.jpg217.jpg

Reports are that Iori has indeed lost his fire! His attacks are now all slashes, and his uppercut and qcb x 3 are both different. Woo! Thanks, SNK!

Is it okay if I use this thread for other KOF news?

Lots of KOF 2002: Unlimited Match news has been released. The new character select screen and character art can be seen here. Surprisingly, SNK actually reorganized the teams a fair amount, and even included a "new" character.

Roster revealed so far include:
Japan Team: Kyo, Benimaru, Goro
Iori Team: Iori, Mature, Vice
Fatal Fury Team: Terry, Andy, Joe
Art of Fighting Team: Ryo, Robert, Yuri
K' Team: K', Maxima, Whip
Korea Team: Kim, Choi, Chang
Psycho Soldier Team: Athena, Kensou, Bao
Ikari Team: Leona, Ralf, Clark
Women's Team: Mai, King, Kasumi
97 Team: Blue Mary, Yamazaki, Billy
Orochi Team: Yashiro, Shermie, Chris
Agents Team: Vanessa, Ramon, Seth
NESTS Team: Kula, Angel, Foxy
Masters Team: Takuma, Chin, Heidern
Girl's Team: May Lee, Xiangfei, Hinako
Edit Team: Shingo, Jhun, Lin
Clone Team: Kusanagi, KYO-1, KYO-2
Standalone: Nameless

Bold = new addition to 2002 roster
5.jpg
The new character (Nameless) is a replacement for K9999, who has apparently been removed from the game. He apparently shares his moves, although some of them have been altered. You can see him at SNK's official page here. He's the dude with the cape.

Lastly, 1UP has some screenshots of KOF 98 for Xbox Live.

I'm guessing there are licensing issues, so that's why they had to replace K9999.

2002 UM almost sounds like a complete remake, rather than an upgrade like '98 UM. New music, stages, new characters, several entirely new moves, changed teams, etc. Should be good.

Edit: Yamazaki was always in 2002.

Yes, they do. But periodically a "Dream Match" is released that is intentionally outside the bounds of any story or plot, and thus do not count / do not affect the story.

I think every fighting game has at least some what of a crazy-ass story. But yeah I'd still say that the overarching KOF storylines are all pretty cohesive.

Yes. A rather long and convoluted one, dealing in ancient bloodlines and complex character relationships.

You can check out the story FAQ on GameFAQs. It does take some liberties with the canon, but you probably can't find a better resource.

I tried explaining the entire plotline to a friend once and I think I lost him after 5 minutes. Note that the FAQ doesn't include any of the post 2001 story, either. They also made a Japanese-only RPG for the original Playstation, which fills in a lot of the little details surrounding the first Orochi arc.

The sheer size of the thing is marvelous, though. It almost rivals Metal Gear.

Hum. 2k2:UM news is all good.

Seems like throws are now command inputs, which is nice. And I like that Raiden doesn't look like so much of a fat bastard.

Good news with Iori. Just when Kyo finally gets his projectile back, Iori loses his flame. Seems like a neat role reversal, though I'll be sad to see him lose his annoying stun DM (no I won't). Still no Yuri news. :/

And talk about whatever KOF stuff you want. It's all related.

The cohesiveness of the story sort of comes and goes. To be honest, I think the games makes less sense if you look at them as a whole. For example, there's a character that's been wearing a high school uniform for over ten years. But the real strength of the story is the characters. There's a lot of individuality to each one, and most KOFs feature lots of custom intros and win-quotes. So, to answer your question, yes the games have a semi-cohesive story, but the real strength of the series is in the characters and their interactions.

Wait, it doesn't just seem like Kyo got his yami barai back, now it looks (from that video) that he's reverted to his pre-96 moveset? (you can see his R.E.D. kick gets replaced by the 3 airborne kicks and his hcb+B/D moves revert to that of his 'charge-and-grab-and-burn' technique) I hope this isn't the case, because I really liked his new moveset that made him a lot more aggressive and effective at close ranges.

Does anyone know more about this? Sorry I haven't really been keeping up with KOF XII news other than hey KOF at a higher res!

EDIT: Wow it seems like it IS the case after all. Also looking at the movelist that seems to confirm it.

Yeah, Kyo has reverted back to his classic move-set. The reasons for this (I suspect) are twofold:

For one thing, it's a lot easier to animate 4 moves (fireball, uppercut, run-and-grab and kicks) than it is to animate all his chains.

Second, Iori has lost his fireball, meaning that the series' standard shoto character no longer plays like a shoto. Thus, Kyo has taken over the role. Even though there haven't been any good videos of Iori yet (that I've found), it seems as if Kyo and Iori has essentially switched places.

Which is completely awesome by me. In my opinion, Iori has always been the cooler character but has suffered for it. While Kyo eventually got more and more moves and outfits, Iori just languished in status-quo land. I can't wait to play as the new Iori.

Yea I finally checked out some video of Iori and it does seem he's now the close quarters contender instead. Hmm. I'm still disappointed, but hopefully Kyo will get his other moves back in XIII or maybe as an alt in the console version, unlikely as that will be. Because anyway I thought Kyo was supposed to have switched his style to be more aggressive according to the storyline (although admittedly the storyline is all kinds of fucked up anyway).

Also I prefer the R.E.D. kick to the old 3 kick move as I pretty much can only think of using it as a follow-up after his jumping front kick and not much it (and even then I preferred using C, then chaining into an uppercut or just straight out using orochinagi/aragami chains)

EDIT: Also goddamn I just realized that this means he won't have mu shiki again oh my god why do they keep giving it back and taking it away like they're playing with me instead

Iori redesign is looking nice. And it'll be nice to have him be even more rushy and aggro.

Somehow I picture him doing something akin to Yamazaki's Desperation Moves. Of course that's not the best example as Yamazaki is the only Orochi who's not susceptible to the Blood Riot (so far). He's just batshit insane.

Here's the TGS trailer for 2002UM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjecM8VGD3Q

There have already been a lot of changes revealed for many of the characters. Leona, Whip, Foxy and Billy have a new DM, while Vice, Yuri, King and Maxima have a new HSDMs. And lots of new moves for nearly everyone. And from the trailer, it looks like all the bosses from the NESTS saga will be unlockable. It'll be a real feat to balance this game.

Not that it's that major, but they updated the official KOFXII site with the TGS trailer. The TGS trailer is just like the earlier trailer, except it includes Andy, Raiden and Iori.

If I had to bet on who the remaining six characters will be, I would guess Elizabeth, Goro, Mai, K', Clark and Yuri. The first two already appeared in an early publicity art, which I'm inclined to think is pretty reliable. Mai and K' are just ridiculously popular and I don't think SNK would want to leave out such popular characters in a KOF REBIRTH game. I'd guess Clark and Yuri mainly because the Ikari and Art of Fighting teams would be conspicuously short a third member without them. Although it's possible King could replace Yuri, Clark and Yuri are also two of the nine characters to appear in every single KOF. Of course, all of these are just guesses.

I also assume that the boss is not included in the 20 characters SNK is promising will appear in the game. I'm personally hoping Adelheid returns, since he's an important character in the side-story arc of the Ash Saga. Also, it seems really appropriate to have the son of Rugal (whose always been the boss of dream matches) to take his father's place in this mini-Dream Match.

What's Yuri's new HSDM? It'd be nice if they gave her the raging demon again.

And I'm still pulling for her to be in XII. She's been in every other KOF, and she just plain deserves it (and so do I).
