F-Zero GX - For those who like it hard & fast

DeaconKnowledgeDeaconKnowledge Registered User regular
edited February 2007 in Games and Technology
I just started playing this game again, and man is it awesome.

AND HARD. I don't think a racing game shy of the GT license tests has been this difficult. I'm trying to unlox the AX tracks (I was almost there, but then had to delete my save info because it locks itself to a memory card).

Coincidentally, this is also the best game from the whole "Nintendo will license out its 2nd and third tier games" philosophy.

In short, F-Zero is amazing. Agree? Disagree?

Yes it is amazing. Completely amazing. In fact, I wonder sometimes why it isn't on a pedestal as a shining example of the genre like Half Life 2 or Planescape. It is, in a word, a rush.

I do however have a 100% complete save of this game, and a custom ship that is just ludicrously fast.

F-Zero GX is my favorite racing game evar. My most sincere and private wish is that there is an awesome Wii sequel that supports a lot of people going up against eachother at once. I disliked VS is GX because I was so used to the swarms of other pilots on the same track. ALSO: more opportunities for death.

I still need to finish the last cup on Master to get the AX cup.

But it's oh, so hard... I lost a controller because of the story mode...

I hope the Wii version gets even faster, and damn, online modus!

    Best racing game ever.

This one time I tried to beat the Diamond Cup and AX Cup with the Frost Lynx G4. When I finally did, I headed back to Story Mode and I was like God, why does your machine suck so much, Falcon?

One of the many greats of this generation. It's a shame it sold like shit.

I broke one of my gamecube controllers with this game. Not from throwing it against the wall either, it was the turbo or accelerate button, it was permanently pressed down until dulled. It no longer had any spring left. I think my finger is messed up for life too.

Absolutely. Generally speaking I don't like racing games that much (although Test Drive: Unlimited my tempt me. I'm just not very good at them as I really dislike the idea of using a break. However F-Zero has always been an awesome series.

I wouldn't really call it hard though, it has a steep learning curve to begin with but most of it is faily easy once you get going (Once you pick a car that suits you ((Frost Lynx G4 ftw!)) and figure out which AI opponents to take out then unlocking the AX tracks isn't too challenging. The story missions might be another matter though :p )

Nintendo owns Retro, and I wasn't actually considering indpendant developers. I was considering big, third party publishers like Sega and Namco.

I walked a mile and a half to a Wal-Mart in the freezing cold back in winter of 2003 to get this game

    I never regretted that

And I can say that I've beaten Story Mode in its entirety on all three difficulty levels, no Gameshark, no Action Replay, and no help from anyone else

It took me longer than a year to do so, but I did it, damnit

F-Zero GX is my favorite racing game ever.

However the story mode is too ass-hard and you can't use custom vehicles in it, so I never got beyond the "Grand Prix" Mission.

(Although it isn't the worst thing in the game. That distinction goes to mission 4, with the Bloody Chain or whatever.)

One of these days I should grab another copy and an AR so I can play the AX tracks.

It has all the character themes in the game, which is fancy. It doesn't have the wonderfully cheesy music used during the Story Mode cutscenes. Not a single second of them. Somebody needs a good shivvin' for that balls-up.

What's Captain Falcon got up his sleeve?

I can recall the lyrics from any track in the game, they're all so delightfully bad. Bad as in terrible, the old-fashioned kind of bad, not the new bad, "The Power Glove is so bad!" bad. But they're bad in a good way. Old-fashioned bad in the newfangled bad way. If you catch my drift.

Story mode chapter 7 on very hard is death in videogame form. Single toughest race in the whole bloody game. I eventually beat it because the 4 guys ahead of me all went over the edge when one of them used the death spin at the super thin part of the track.

Also, I always found it funny that on one of the casino tracks you'd go flying up to your doom if you went too fast.

Unlocking the 4th cup is a fun challenge. It's reasonable and worth the reward. The story mode on the other hand...

I really hope for the next f-zero there is an easy option for the story mode(or make normal less punishing).

Attacking is difficult, I found that most attacks may slow an opponent down but they also seem to screw me up, seems like a waste. On two player mode with my widescreen TV, the partition obscures the back of the one player car, it gets annoying.

Overall though it's an excellent multi-player game, that's well worth the price.

P.S Why even make a racer like the Black Bull..?

The hardest story mission in the game is easily the Very Hard grand prix level

Why? Because you have to win 1st place, and not one but two of the opponents take rubberbanding to extreme levels (Blood Falcon and Black Shadow)

It's easy enough to take Black Shadow out if you do it right: side-attack him right off the start of the race (like, within half a second of the race beginning), and if you do it right, he's out. Blood Falcon is much harder to take out; you'll have to play it as it goes, looking for the opportunity.

Once you've taken care of these two problems, the race becomes a bit easier, as the AI will start overtaking you at first place within five seconds instead of the usual two.

    Some tips:

    - On the first lap, hug the inside as long as you can. You can't boost this round anyway, might as well take advantage of the fact that your opponents will never willingly enter the lava floor.

    - On the second and all subsequent laps, stay the hell out of the lava floor. You need that energy to boost. If your machine can take more than simply being grazed by another machine by the time you hit the energy refill, you're doing it wrong.

    - Take out as many racers as you can. Obviously, 15 opponents are much easier to deal with than 29. Black Shadow and Blood Falcon take priority due to their rubberbanding, otherwise go crazy. The section of track without rails is great for spin-attacking and knocking others off the track but don't overdo it or you'll lose control and fall off.

    - Save up a bit of your boost during the final lap. When you hit the energy refill you should be in a boost that would have completely drained your energy if you hadn't been in the refill area. The other racers are going to beat their boost buttons to a squishy pulp at this point and so should you. If you're not in first place going into the refill you stand less of a chance of winning but it's not impossible. Don't attack anyone on the final stretch, don't do anything that'll slow you down. If you win this thing, it'll be by tens of milliseconds, if that much.

I remember reading somewhere that they basically screwed up the AI with blackbull, so he's far too good. On the lucky side that means he's the only guy you need to "attack" if you want to win a cup.
