Bah, details. He'd still kick your dog's ass any day of the week. He's civilized, you see; he does not resort to claws and bites to get his way, he just shanks you in the kneecap.
Symphonia was my first, then the GBA Phantasia(which I can't bring myself to finish), and I've never played Destiny despite owning it, so I guess Symphonia II will be my second.
Well, I also own Abyss. That should probably take priority.
The only reason I even took an interest in the series was because Kousuke Fujishima was involved.
Yeah, I really got into this series after the Final Fantasy series decided to go all fucking retarded. Seriously, after playing FFX and that god-forsaken FFX-2 (as well as FFXI and FFXII), I've decided I much prefer the direction the Tales series is going to the FF one.
Someone give me a 360 for Christmas. I want to play Tales of Vesperia.
What ever happened to this being a multi-platform title? I wonder what the odds are of Namco pulling the ol' switcheroo like they did with Eternal Sonata.

I think they were supposed to be releasing Vesperia on the PS3, but something happened along the way. That little "Only on XBox 360" tag on Vesperia pretty much says it all, though as you said, Eternal Sonata and Bioshock are both going over to the black colossus. I'd say it's still possible.

Destiny is horrible. HORRIBLE. Do not play it. It will give you a disease, and not one of the cool ones like awesomeitis.

It was never confirmed to be a multi-platform title. Even stretching it, the best you could get was that they hinted it could of been a timed 360 exclusive. Not to say a PS3 version isn't possible sometime in the future but it was never stated as multi-platform.

Fairly high, I'd guess, although it'll be a good six months until we find out either way, and a year until the game itself crosses over, if it does.
I'm not really sure how you can say the game looks like crap. I mean, sure, it's no Vesperia, but it still looks pretty damn good. Not only that, but I mean, hell, its an RPG for the Wii, and Tales game for the Wii to boot.
Because of this thread I went to a local video store (that happens to sell their old rentals) and bought Tales of Symphonia on the GC. I hope that was a good move.

Though it does suffer from a ton of senseless plot twists. Abyss suffered the same thing, too much terminology that was never explained in detail. I'm glad Vesperia remedied this, they just stuck to three or four things and centered everything around them.

Symphonia just does a really poor job of explaining itself and almost all of the mini-bosses and whatnot are never intelligently explained at all. Combine that with almost all of the bosses in the first third of the game pretending to be in other groups, or claiming that they're from group X and then immediately doing something totally contrary to that group's goals doesn't help matters either. It makes a lot more sense the second time through, though some major bosses still have no sensical motivation whatsoever.

When I first played ToS, after many years of playing Final Fantasy games, as well as other traditional JRPGs, I kind of saw ToS as an "Arcade RPG." By that I mean, it had typical japanese elements, a story that was decent, but didn't make or break the game, and some good fast-paced action to keep me interested. Mind you, I hadn't seen an action RPG yet, so I was oblivious to the sub-genre, but those were all things that brought me to enjoying the experience. Hell, even the voices didn't bother me, as I had already played FFX by the time I learned of ToS, so even Colette was tolerable after listening to an entire game's worth of Tidus.

I really enjoyed ToS because I looked at it as sort of a satire on pointless JRPGs. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but viewed non-seriously it is hilarious.

Funny story for me regarding Symphonia. I was actually planning to get Star Ocean 3 around that time, but somehow I wound up getting Symphonia first, knowing nothing about the game or even the Tales series. And I got so sucked into it that by the time I finished, I had lost all interest in SO3.
From everything I've heard, this was an extremely fortunate turn of events.

Too late for me, but if it's any consolation, my friend has racked up around 300 hours in it.
Yeah the only thing that bugged me about Vesperia was how I found the plot extremely close to Final Fantasy 6 in terms of magic and al.
So you need blastia to cast magic which is created from apatheia which is what Entelexia turn into once they die... looks like a lot like Espers and magicite. Now I know a lot of RPG plots are similar and I'm not really bothered by it but the fact that both games starts with a character that can use magic without the use of magicite/blastia and that both antagonists is the general of the empire who's working behind the emperor's back bla bla bla...
I love ToV so please don't hit me!
Edit: I played SO3 and really didn't like it. I didn't know *anything* about it beforehand so my opinion wasn't tainted by the evil of the interwebs. I just felt like everything was so contrived.

Destiny was my first tales experience, and I had a damn good time. I was ten, but I think you're still being too harsh. Two player RPG = absolute win for two nerd buddies after school. It was way better than most of the RPG PSX blather that covered 1997/1998. Except for the Square titles.

Also, Symphonia is one of my top 2 or 3 RPGs ever. Not a final fantasy fan, not going to lie.
Man, I Loved SO3 too. I never got crazy into the side stuff. Too much busywork for no reward, if you ask me.
Back on topic. I'm just about done with Part 2 in Vesperia, but it has yet to top Abyss. The plot just kinda meanders throughout most of what I've played so far. It just lacks the focus Abyss had.
That, and it's a pretty tall order to top the awesomeness that is Jade.

I'm loving the Abyss anime so far. I don't know if this is simply because I love the game so much, but for now I'm happy knowing I'll get 26 episodes out of this. Should mean we'll get to delve into the plot in detail.
Also, I found it funny how (spoilers for ep 2, if anybody cares)
Jade cast Indignation on the Liger Queen, when in the game it's a Mystic Arte you can't even get until your second playthrough. Funny and badass.
Yes, I can agree that listening to cheagles talk is like having your ear sodomized. I actually turned the volume down at that part out of sheer embarrassment.
Oh, and I hadn't realized that Mieu had a cutesy speech tick either desuno. That was an even more unpleasant surprise than hearing Haruko Momoi's voice coming out of Anise. It's funny how the mind selectively forgets things. Not that she's particularly bad VA, it's that her voice is fucking piercing. They did cutesy up Anise a bit more than I expected, which I actually like. The important thing is that Jade is in the party for the rest of the game/show starting next episode.

This is pretty much completely true of the original. The combat was somehow a step DOWN from Phantasia because they added in melee companions, but had an insanely horrible AI for them. And you cant switch who you control, so you have to cope.
Basically anyone who isnt a caster is useless. Its almost as if you solo everything.
However, the remake has what is touted as the most entertaining combat engine ever. Rebirth comes close. It also looks gorgeous.

Man I am really enjoying Tales of Vesperia right now.
Apparently I'm a good portion of the way through it though.
Is there a good amount of post-game stuff (other than New Game+)?
The EX Dungeon takes several runthroughs to complete and will rock your face off if you're not adequately prepared and not playing on Easy. That also unlocks the largest Coliseum battle, which is pretty fun with each character as well.

That's problem #1. Also on the list is the incomprehensible pacing. You go through about 8 dungeons and about 10 hours of play before the first boss fight that you can win. Can you even imagine how painful that is? It's just dungeon after dungeon of either being forced to backtrack out, or getting to the end of it and them just going "CONGRATULATIONS. YOU ARE SUPER PLAYER." Even for the one boss fight that you're supposed to lose, you're just mugged on your way into a town. For the first 90% of the game, every character is a swordsman, so battles are just a homogenous muck. Encounter rate is way too high and there are areas with both random encounters AND enemies wandering around on the field, which makes it even higher. If you thought any other Tales lead was dumb, they specifically tried to make Stahn into a dumb country boy, so his contribution to most of the game is "DURRRRRRRRRRRR." Aaaaaand like all Tales games, the archer is overpowered, the difference is that Destiny somehow ends up with two of them.
