Having owned a Wii and 360 each since launch, I haven't really kept up at all with Sony's beast so I am looking for some general info as well as for what games to look for.
First, is their another version of the PS3 coming out soonish that will be better or is the newest one out (I have a ps2 so backwards compatibility means nothing to me).
Can I use ps2 controllers on this version (could you ever)?
Blue-Ray: Can I play Blu-Ray movies on it even though I don't have an Hdtv? Will it look any better or worse than my dvd's?
When it comes to cross platform games, which system usually has the upper hand?
I understand that Live will most likley be better than the PS3's online just because of the dedicated servers, but is there really that much of a difference? How does the PS3's friends list work? (All I know of Sony's online exploits was my brief time with Socom on the PS2. I guess basically I am asking if I have a PS3, is it worth it to hold onto my Gold Live Account.
I am pretty set up getting littlebigplanet and Every Day Shooter asap, what other PS3 titles should I be on the lookout for?
Does the PS3 run hot? As in hot enough to warrant a fan aimed toward it every so often?
I have a psp (launch model), can I do anything cool with my PS3?
I believe that's about it, thanks for all the help and please feel free to tell me anything else I need to know. Also, if you know of any can not live without Wii games, I am open to hearing about those (be warned, the pull of littlebigplanet is heavy on me
).

What is this, a press release?
Yeah you can. They won't look nearly as good, but they will look slightly better than your DVDs.
As for Blu Ray, you'll be able to watch the flicks fine. But from my experience in taking the system to a friend's house with me and watching a couple movies, you're getting nearly no difference in picture quality if you're sporting an SD set. I mean if you're planning on upgrading tvs soon, and don't mind the extra cash on the disks, go for it so you don't have to worry about it later, but if you're in it for the long haul with your SD set, and still plan on getting a PS3, stick with normal DVDs.
As for games, it's a pretty standard list. Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank (more of a rental IMO, not terribly long, no online, and I personally didn't get much replay out of it, even if I really liked the game itself), Folklore if you like quirky RPGs, Resistance, Hot Shots Golf is awesome, and Echochrome are the first games off the top of my head.
As for which system has the upper hand with cross platform games? It may change soon, but especially if you already have a 360 and Live, it tends to be the 360 for multiplayer, and well, if you're going from this point in time back, it still tends to be the 360, but it might not be a bad idea to read some reviews for both versions of specific games from review sites just to see if they note any particulars.
It does run a bit hot, but that's no big deal at all.
As for the PSP, yeah. Some games support remote play. You can connect via wifi through your PSP to your PSP, play some games that support it, and you can watch video and listen to music remotely if you have an external storage devise hooked up to the system.
I know this came off as overly critical, and I do like my PS3, but I really have to say again that it really really isn't a great system if you have an SD set, though YMMV.
No, you misunderstood me. I know where that came from, I was questioning why you felt the need to include in in your post. I'm fairly certain most of us here know what the PS3 is, even without the blob of copied technical data, it almost looked like a poor attempt at virtal advertising.
HD isn't to a big a deal for me one way or the other. I do foresee myself within maybe a year at most having a Hdtv. Also, a living room away contains my parents decent Polaroid Hdtv set.
honky, I usually feel the same way you do, but I honestly have not turned on my Wii since March. Although...hm, for the new DSi, will I need a Wii to access the...oh who am I kidding, I can't buy a third DS.
Ah. Well I know there are at least I think 4 different versions of the PS3 so I thought I would post that so people knew which version I am planning on getting.
Given how much confusion there's been over what model of PS3 does what, I think he was just trying to pinpoint what the hell he was getting.
Ah, I see, that does make sense now. I've always found the various SKUs rather confusing myself.
IMHO, my PS3 became a Rock Band playing machine (thanks to MM9, even my Wii gets more play time lately...). MGS4 only got one playthrough (YMMV definitely on this one) and I'm probably gonna purchase Silent Hill either this week or the next one. It's not a bad machine per se, but I really believe I'd been happier with a 360. I'm sticking with it tho, maybe next gen I'll switch to the Microsoft camp.
I did not intend to say anything in favor of the Wii, other than the fact that I don't advocate selling any console, but because you put this line in...
Have you looked through the first post of this thread and found nothing that interested you? I recommend that before making any drastic moves. Wario Land: Shake It and De Blob just came out which are both awesome, and there's a lot of snazzy Wiiware on there too...have you looked at what's been available since March? If you have any other questions you can ask in that thread.
I mean also considering that you will get like $100 at most for your whole collection.
Thanks, I shall now look through this thread
Also, at gamestop they were going to give me something like 125$ I think for my Wii, at hastings, 200$ which I consider fair considering it's only 50$ less than a new system and the system I have is a day 1 system.
And if you don't have an HDTV, paying the extra money for Blu-ray movies isn't worth it at all.
Dude, you should seriously go eBay. Used Wiis are still selling for $200+.
EDIT: If you have decided on selling, anyway. If there's some doubt, definitely stop and reconsider, especially if this is going to be solely for LittleBigPlanet and nothing immediately else. (You know that Everyday Shooter is coming to PSP, right?)
Practically every retail store will offer more money on your old stuff than GS will.
The main thing is that there were just several conferences with new stuff announced for this year and next, so the Wii's got the brightest future it's had in a while. Maybe since launch.
Nothing wrong with getting a PS3 though, I just don't recommend selling the Wii unless you know there's nothing of interest coming down the pipe.
I'm selling a bunch of stuff off for my ps3 raise funds and was wondering if I could still fullfill some ff12 love
Nope.
Well, kinda yeah. They all still do PS1 BC, just not PS2. I know, most people are talking about PS2, but I'm still just saying.
Yeah.. I'll jsut suck it up and live without ff12.
I've beaten it once before anyways.
[DISCLAIMER] I don't own a PS3, but I do have a PSP. [/DISCLAIMER]
You can put a PS1 game into your PS3, and then play it on your PSP (but I think you have to leave your PS3 on)
You can buy stuff for your PSP at the PSN store on the PS3 (which you can also do with a PC + USB cable)
As stated there might be another ps3 with larger drive coming out, but it will be more money so no point in waiting. (Since you can upgrade HDD easy)
Can I use ps2 controllers on this version (could you ever)?
You can for some games use ps2 controllers as 2nd the 3rd controller, but I don't really recommend it. (They don't have the PS button) If you want a cheap controller get a Sixaxis without rumble.
Blue-Ray: Can I play Blu-Ray movies on it even though I don't have an Hdtv? Will it look any better or worse than my dvd's?
Might look better, but I doubt it. Blu-rays do have some nice features that dvds don't, but not worth the price. (Unless you get them for the same amount as dvd.)
When it comes to cross platform games, which system usually has the upper hand?
Xbox usually had the upper hand in the past, when developers were unfamiliar with the ps3 and devel tools sucked, but that is largely not the case anymore. Most games are pretty much the same now.
Live uses peer-peer for 95% of its games, so dedicated servers is not really a plus in its column. What Live does have is a more cohesive online environment. Like webpage you can chat and gamertags from, cross game invites and such and every online game has to have achievements and voice support where on the ps3 its optional. As time goes on psn gets closer and closer to xbox live, but it isn't there yet.
I am pretty set up getting littlebigplanet and Every Day Shooter asap, what other PS3 titles should I be on the lookout for?
Check out Pixel Junk: Monsters and Eden (pass on racers), get Uncharted, look into Valkyria Chronicles.
Does the PS3 run hot? As in hot enough to warrant a fan aimed toward it every so often?
The ps3 does produce a lot of heat. (at least older 90nm ones line mine, yours would make less) However the ps3 has a huge ass fan and heat sink so I have never had to worry about it over heating.
I have a psp (launch model), can I do anything cool with my PS3?
Remote play is kind of neat, but it only really works well with slower games/ones that don't require precision movement since there is an input lag. (Pretty much useless for Eden and Bionic Commando but good for Monsters for example) Remote play is good for browsing the store and setting up downloads as well as access media and watching movies off of you ps3. (Does not work for dvds, but streaming stuff is good) Resistance II is going to do some cool stuff with it as well. You can also buy games for your psp via the psn store on your ps3.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
Appparently firmware 5 for the psp will support the PSN store so you can direct download to your psp
woot
An admirable pursuit! Like many others, though, I could never advocate selling any system. I have a fully BC PS3, and I'm hanging on to my PS2, just in case. I'm in the beta and I can tell you LittleBIGplanet is indeed awesome - but not, perhaps, four hundred dollars worth of awesome unless you're the creative type.
If you enjoy creating, if you like the idea of making your own levels and figuring out all the intricate mechanics require to make the product of your imagination come alive? LBP is your bag, baby. I spent most of the past week getting a level I made as close as possible to perfection (still not there, btw), and the feeling of satisfaction when all the mechanics you've designed line up and work perfectly is... exceptional. Really, really unlike anything else.
If not? LBP is a platformer with physics and infinite levels. If that's worth a Wii? Your call.
Where Sony's online component differs most from Microsoft's XBLA is quantity, and arguably some quality. You'll find cool awesome stuff like N+, Braid, Castle Crashers and shmups on XBLA, but I've also heard there's a wealth of crap you wouldn't want to waste the poop it would take to smear it. This is all hearsay - I don't have a 360.
The Sony PSN Store doesn't have the quantity of XBLA, but I've really fallen in love with the quality. Here's a spoilered list of the awesome:
Siren: Blood Curse
Coming to Europe on Blu-Ray, PSN is the only place to buy Blood Curse in North America unless you're prepared to import. It came out this past Summer to positive reviews, when it was the only survival horror game in town... let's just Meta it vs. Silent Hill: Homecoming... Siren gets a 79% vs. Homecoming's 72.5%. Take that, western developers!
I'm a large proponent of this title in particular - if you like survival horror, if you like adventure games, if you like a mind-bending story, Siren is a very safe bet.
Check out the demo, but keep in mind it's not a very good representation of the game's overall quality.
Warhawk
Sony's king of online multiplayer is fully downloadable, if you don't feel like making a trek to the store to pick up a box. In Warhawk you harry your enemies on foot, via vehicles, or even take to the sky in the titular Warhawks. What's often pointed out about Warhawk is (A) it's perfectly balanced, no matter if you're flying, footing it or driving, and (B) it's the best online experience you can have with the PS3, so far. Huge maps, tons of players online at once (I think it's 32?) - people swear by Warhawk.
Check out the demo.
WipEout HD
A classic of the PS2 that gained a resurgence in popularity thanks to an excellent port onto the PSP, WipEout is high-speed antigrav racing at its finest. Take into account that this game runs at a constant 60fps and 1080p and you have a technical showpiece for hardcore gamers lookin' to get their speed on.
No demo.
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
If you've never played a R&C title, this may be the one to whet your appetite for some anthopomorphic space wombat action. One of the best-looking titles on the PS3, Quest for Booty is a 4-hour adventure featuring the classic R&C gameplay of platforming + shooting + great environments and music = profit. Boy I wish I had a box for this one >.<
No demo - but there is a demo for R&C: Up Your Arsenal - check that out if you want to try out the formula without droppin' dolla's.
LITTLE GAMES - these are the sort of stuff you'll find on XBLA. They're small, they're cute, and they're a lot of fun for a budget price. I won't include multiplatform stuff like BC: Rearmed or MM9 or Castlevania - so here we go, in no particular order...
Pixeljunk Eden - a beautiful 2D platformer with a wonderful art style and crazy music. There's really no description beyond that which will do Eden justice, so try out the demo to discover what it's really all about. It's my favorite "little" PSN game.
Check out the Demo.
Pixeljunk Monsters - I can only recommend this one based on what I've heard of it. A lot of people love this game (and apparently, a lot of people's girlfriends). The short version? It's a castle defense game that gets viciously challenging in later levels. Though, I suppose, so does Eden.
Check out the Demo.
Echochrome - unique is the best word to describe this M.C. Escher-inspired puzzle game. You manipulate perspective to change the rules of reality and allow your little man to traverse the environment. There's nothing else like it, really, and that's a good or bad thing depending on your point of view (heheh).
Check out the demo.
Elefunk - a strangle little title. Think lemmings, but instead of telling them what to do, they just walk when you say it's cool. And instead of being lemmings, they're elephants.
Apparently this game is great fun for people who dig engineering at all, as you have a set amount of materials and you're required to slap together bridges and supports that will allow your elephant to cross unharmed.
Check out the demo.
That's all I can think of, off the top of my head... why do I get the feeling I'm missing something?
160 gig, but you can swap in a 320gig notebook HDD into your PS3 if you feel the need. You can take any PS3 and upgrade the HDD - Sony sort of figured people would want to do this, and even included instructions for it in your PS3 user's manual. There's no reason not to go for a cheaper one, if BC isn't an issue for you.
No. ...wait... what Greeble said? I'd never heard that, but he may well be right.
What the other guy said. With an SDTV you won't really need the BRs.
Entirely depends on the title - time was the 360 would win hands down (Orange Box), but lately it's been mostly 50/50. What this means? Both versions are perfect - get it for the controller you like best / the online with the most friends of yours. I think the difference between the PS3 and 360 GTA IV (in terms of Metarating) was 0.7% in favor of the PS3.
Now... I could be totally wrong about this. Seriously - I could have heard wrong - but what I've heard is that the online component with most 360 titles (I'm sure it's the case with Gears of War) is that they're peer-to-peer services. IE, the host wins? Sony has the dedicated serves. If a game has an online component with Sony, it falls to the developer to secure dedicated hosting for the game. There's no P2P hosting with PS3. Of course, I could be wrong - and if so please correct me.
Couldn't tell ya. I was dipping my toe in uncharted waters with the 'p2p' stuff there.
Where's Slash when you need him? The games that were great on the 360 are still great on the PS3 - if you wanted to pick up GTA IV but never did, it's just as good on Sony's box. If we're just talking about exclusives (spoiler'd again)...
Because the storytelling is so exceptional, the demo for Uncharted didn't suck me in, and I didn't give a crap about the game until I rented it and played it through. Even so, if you're interested at all,
Check out the demo.
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal - I just love typing these words - anthropomorphic space wombat. The titular duo made a heaping helping of cash money for Insomniac on the PS2, and they're back to show all the pretenders how you bend the PS3's technology to your mighty creative will. Ratchet & Clank is often hailed as the best-looking title on the PS3, along with Uncharted and MGS4. What those other two titles will never have is R&C's sense of wonder, whimsy, and crazy look-at-the-world-explode action.
If you've played any of the earlier titles on PS2 or PSP, you know you need this game. If not?
Check out the demo.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Solid Snake is back in his final mission. If you need to know more than that, you may want to give this game a rent, 'cause otherwise you would have bought it long before you even had a PS3.
There is no demo. Download the MGS4_Theatrical_Trailer then give it a rent to see if it's your cup of tea.
Resistance: Fall of Man - the currently-best FPS on the PS3 is brought to you by Insomniac, those awesome dudes who keep bringing us the adventures of Ratchet & Clank. A unique idea - Resistance takes place in an alternate history where World War II never happened and a mysterious race called the Chimera have swept Europe, quickly making Britain the last stronghold. One day an American fellow shows up, and seeing as he's the one under player control it's safe to say he'll single-handedly win the war effort.
I'm no big fan of console FPSes, but Resistance is actually a perfectly solid FPS on the console - one I really enjoyed and will pick up when it's $30.00 which I happen to have lying around. The online component is supposedly exceptional (never tried it, never will), but what really stands out (apart from the story) is Insomniac's trademark Crazy Weapons Collection. These guys need jobs with defense contractors - seriously. They could win wars.
Check out the demo.
Again, I'm sure there's more, I just can't think of 'em right now. Oh, right - Folklore. Need to try that one, still. There's a demo, I think!

Upcoming Exlcusives:
-Resistance 2 (this fall)
-LittleBIGplanet (have you heard of this one? hurr hurr)
-Yakuza 3 (?)
-inFamous (spring '08, by the Sly Cooper crew Sucker Punch).
Mine's never overheated, but like any computer of any kind, it generates a hunk of heat.
Ho yeah. There's tons of connectivity between the PS3 and PSP. I've heard of guys who stream terabytes of video from their home PC to their PS3, which then streams to their PSP while they're sitting in a coffee shop by a wireless hotspot across town.
Beyond that, there's the ability to play a great deal of PS3 games by streaming them to your PSP. Seriously. You can play Lair on your PSP - though I'm not sure if you'd want to.
Also: my PS3 looks just great on my 27" SDTV - I have no problem reading text in any of the games I've mentioned.
Sorry this went so long. Good luck, gamer!
Edit: Ah, right I forgot about Valkyria Chronicles! Thanks Greeble. Also, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm looks incredible. There's a demo out for that one.
