So I dug out my old copy of Megaman and Bass, and Megaman 9 has left me wanting to go back and replay older megaman games without me being 10 years old, and seeing how well I'm doing. then after the first level or so I remembered: Megaman and Bass sucks balls. it just doesn't look or feel right at all.

I'm sorry, but megaman should not be able to jump from the bottom of the screen to the to. I don't care if its to scale, they should shrink everything then damnit.

You didn't even mention the difficulty. Once into King's castle, the resolution gripes are replaced by tirades of verbal abuse directed at your GBA screen.

Wasn't someone here working on a Megaman HD for XNA?

You're thinking of me, probably. Those sprites Redraptor posted aren't mine, though.

Update: I've got the engine running and the sprites dropped into it. After I crunch some numbers to find out what actually constitutes HD and what I can fit on a computer screen while maintaining the original aspect ratios, I'm on to level mapping.

What I'll probably do after that is replicate Flashman's stage (it has easily defined "blocks" and a relatively simple gimmick (ice [wut]) and do my best to replicate the physics of Megaman's weight vs. gravity, run speed, jump height, etc.

That was a really shitty port. The original version was for the SNES, and the resolution isn't a shitty piece of shit. It still isn't an amazing game, but is at least not amazingly shitty like the GBA version.

So I'm half way to doing what I'm pretty sure for me, will be impossible. I have made it to Wily's Castle with no deaths and no etanks and only 27 minutes. I'm trying to unlock Jitterbug, Invincible, Almost Invincible and No Coffee Break in one run.

Hopefully you did the Robot Masters without a helmet, because you could have knocked out 'Headbanging' in this run too.

Removing your helmet makes you take 2x damage though. Not an ideal challenge to combine with No Coffee Break and Invincible.

It's easy to beat the game in under an hour on a no-death run. If you've made it to Wily's Castle in under 30 minutes, you're in good shape. No E-tanks might be a problem if you're not already really familiar with the bosses, but you can bring a half-damage item to help with Wily 4 if you need it. (Remember, Black Holes and Tornadoes are great at sucking up Wily's shots in his final form if you're bad at dodging them.)

Also, regarding the video just posted, I'm not sure what it is, but I find the visuals in all of the non-NES-style MMs to be absolutely repulsive.

I know. I played the SNES version. If not for the fact that I can't read Japanese, I would have never touched the GBA port. The game would have been just fine if not for the difficulty, but it's hard to the point where it stops being fun. In fact, I remember reading some old advertisement for the game (might not have been for the GBA version) that listed the lack of Energy Tanks as one of the primary features of the game. That is not a feature. That is a dick move.

I can state from extensive "research" that a lot of the problem with the sprites wasn't the sprites themselves, but the fact that they actually had too many frames of animation. It's possible to do (for example) frame-perfect sliding in NES games because sliding is a single frame. In Megaman 8, there are about 2 frames at the start and end of every slide, so it seems slow and sluggish.

My favorite part is how megaman is now taller than the "metools?" the little guys with hardhats and hide mostly. So your only chance to actually shoot them is when they initially jump.

Does anyone have any tips for beating Galaxy Man in 10 seconds? Even when he cooperates, I still can’t do it. Mainly I’m wondering if it’s possible to still do it if his first move is to fly in the air.

Besides that and failing the Mega Diet challenge without realizing it, I’ve enjoyed this game even more than I thought I would. 86% of the challenges are done. Probably won’t have the patience to try a couple of the remaining ones.

You can get rid of his black hole with the concrete shot, which makes it easier to hit him when he stands beneath it. You should be able to hit him at least 4 times when he's stationary like this, 5 if you're good.

Trying to get conservationist now and I just beat the game and failed to get it.

    Spots I used energy:

2 tornado blows on the first two platforms in wily 1

rush jet for the next area (getting to the platform to the east of the spikes and jumping the rest of the way)

rush coil on the magma beams (I fucked up here and fell and ended up using rush coil 3 times instead of 2. . .which could have done it, but I also used my spike guards on the spikes after the swinging platform so you'd think they would cancel each other out?)

coil at the beginning of wily 2

trident for the spots in wily 2 that require it.

coil for the spot near the projector guys where you have to get up near the sniper joe in wily 2

coil for the last energy beam in wily 4

Is there a place where I can use less energy? Do you think I failed simply because I used that third coil in Wily 1?

I think amount of energy is taken into account, rather than # of uses.

So for some of those tornado blows, you should have used the rush coil instead.

1 rush coil is like 3 bars? whereas 1 tornado is like 8?

I haven't tried this challenge, but i'd say on 1 maybe doing Rush Coil then one shot of Concrete on the top magma tube.

on 2 use the trident to take out the block instead of jumping over by the 1up

Rush just drops through the rising platforms in Wily 1.

Also I thought coil either took less energy than concrete shot or the same, but I can check that. Trident probably uses less though, I definitely should have done that in wily 2.

Bolded are spots where you probably messed up.

My theory is that this challenge has different limits per each weapon, and it expects you to not use more than a certain amount of each. You are probably using too much Rush Coil. Use the Tornado for all of the rising platforms (4 uses total), the Trident at the very beginning of Wily 2 (you should use the Trident exactly 5 times total), and the Concrete Shot for the final laser.

Do not do this. Quoting myself from the last thread:

I tested this myself. Here's what I used on two separate attempts:

Wily 1 (first attempt, THIS FAILED)
    - 1 Tornado for the very first rising platform
    - 1 Concrete Shot in the next room with 2 rising platforms
    - about 3 or 4 pixels of Rush Jet for the remaining platforms
    - 1 Rush Coil in the 1-beam room
    - 1 Rush Coil in the 3-beam room (you can reach the middle ladder with it and go from there)
    - consumed 2 spike guards instead of using Rush Jet to cross the row of spikes

Wily 1 (second attempt, THIS SUCCEEDED):
    - 4 Tornadoes to get through all of the rising platforms
    - 1 Rush Coil in the 1-beam room
    - 1 Rush Coil in the 3-beam room
    - consumed 2 spike guards instead of using Rush Jet to cross the row of spikes

And for the remaining levels, I used the same things on both attempts.

    Wily 2:
    - 1 Trident to clear out the first block (with the Metools)
    - 1 Trident to clear out the second block (with those floating green things)
    - 1 Rush Coil in the first fake platform room with the Joe and spark ball thing
    - 3 Tridents underwater to clear out the necessary blocks

    Wily 3:
    - nothing

    Wily 4:
    - 1 Concrete shot for the final laser (just take the damage from the other lasers or get hit by a Metool and use the invincibility to run through them)

A lot of people have tried using Rush Jet instead of Tornado Blow on Wily 1 (because it actually uses up less total pixels of energy if you do it right), but several of them have had less luck with it. I think the game either expects you to use T. Blow for those, or it expects you to not surpass a certain total amount of Rush Jet, and using it on that part runs the risk of taking you over the limit.

Testing the sprites and engine. I think I've got the physics matched up.

    Fun facts!
Megaman can jump exactly 64 pixels laterally, or 4 blocks.
Megaman can jump exactly 48 pixels high, or 3 blocks.

The NES' resolution is 248x224, this is running at 3x that. The sprites may have lost a bit of their charm going from 10x the normal size to 3x, but seeing as how my computer doesn't support resolutions of 2480x2240...

I'd imagine they also look better when played on a full screen in not-Youtube quality. Awesome work, though! Can't wait to see the finished result at some point in the future!

With Thunder Beam and Rolling Cutter if you pause and unpause repeatedly whenever you unpause it does damage again.

So with Yellow Demon you shoot one Thunder beam and just as it hits you start tapping pause repeatedly you can kill it in one turn.

Thanks for the info about Galaxy Man, Sixfortyfive.

For the conservationist challenge, I succeeded by doing the same thing as Sixfortyfive except I used Rush Jet (3 units) to cross the row of spikes in Wily 1 where he used spike guards.

Before that though, I apparently failed it by needing to use an extra Laser Trident in Wily 2 when I died trying to make those jumps in the first vertical section.
