I am trying to play Silent Hill 2 but goddamn this game is creepy!

I am not good at scary games. I can't even handle Resident Evil.

I think I might be in over my head.

I am, however, making a Pyramid Head costume for Halloween.

One game I still come back to from time to time is Clive Barker's Undying. That could be quite an experience at times. The howlers always knew when to scare the crap out of me.

Man, that game had some great moments. I loved the atmosphere in that game sometimes. Like (spoilered just in case):
When you're first in the house and you have to go down this hallway and there's these windows on the right side of the screen. Then you see the drapes flutter about as you hear the howling come closer. When they finally appeared it was a total "OH SHIT!" moment.

Man, I hadn't been scared like that since RE1.

I loved the "alternate view" effects. You're just walking along, minding your own business, and then the gem starts glowing.

The gem wants to show me something.

Something I'd probably be a lot happier not seeing.

But like a fool, I'll look.

Yup, I was right, I was happier having not seen that.

I played the hell out of that a long time ago, but sadly my game/save got corrupted and I couldn't get past the cove/ship part, and I never got around to picking it back up. I think I might still have the disk laying around at home somewhere too.

Hugo's House of Horrors was great, though I could never get past that room in the basement where you have to outrun what I remember to be a mummy.

I'm looking to pick up Fatal Frame to satisfy the Halloween game craving, and have questions: Which version is better, PS2 or Xbox? Does the Xbox version work well with the 360's BC? Is the game easy enough to find that I'll be able to choose at a given EB?

I think the guy still sells it. I remember I was looking up some Hugo game or another and I found his page where he'll still sell it to you for like $15. Which is way too much for an old VGA game, imo. Make it like $5 and we'll talk.

Wow, seriously? You can get the Space Quest Collection for less than that if you look around for more than half a minute, and those games were the bees knees. I'm not particularly interested in paying roughly the same amount for a piece of nostalgic ripoff, even if I am curious about it.

I'll just check eBay or something.

It has, but it bears repeating. The spider enemies in SS2 were so scary that Looking Glass eventually had to release a patch that took them out entirely because some people would stop playing when they appeared.

Has anyone mentioned shadowgate? I swear that NES game had the most creepy 8-bit music I've ever heard.

that game had me freak out a bit when I was at home all my myself. Ya. really creeped out. Some of the songs still send shivers down my spine.

For serious? I mean, they are just the spiders from Thief with a different skin.

Thief 1 and 2 were creepy as all hell.

I only played the second one, but I found the best way to block was to just not be there when an enemy attacked. Dodge them entirely and hit them when there is an opening.

Yeah, but the appearance combined with the hissing sound and the overall creepy atmosphere of SS2 was just too much for some. You can still find the spider-less patch in some places.

I was wrong about one thing, though. Looking Glass never released that patch, it was one of the most popular fan mods.

Those spiders had nothing on the Protocol Droid warehouse, which was set up so perfectly to turn a player into a gibbering paranoid mess.

But then this is from someone who's not bothered by spiders

Not a scary game as such, but if people are going to play a Halloween game they should find a way to play some co-op 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors'. So much fun.

If you don't have a friend, play it alone. It's the perfect Halloween-ish game.

Xbox is the better version. It's a directors cut with additional content as well as sharper graphics. The Xbox version works fine on the 360, except one unimportant cut scene doesn't load right. Strangely enough, I find the glitched version of the scene is actually creepier. It can be pretty difficult to find either version of the game though so good luck!

When I finished Silent Hill Origins on the PSP it renewed a nearly decade old commitment to actually finish the first Silent Hill.

Silent Hill does not play correctly on either the PS2 or the PS3, so I had to dig out my PS1. This really pissed me off as I really wanted to believe in Remote Play.

Since I really only wanted the content and not the "isn't it challenging to play a game where nobody spent any time on making gameplay responsive" fun of retro gaming I put it on Easy. But the game still terrified me until I went into the options and turned the music volume down. Suddenly the game wasn't scary in the slightest.

I turned the music back up and almost cried.

So I turned it back down.

Finished the game in 7 hours. Boy was the final sequence badly done.

The cacophony of whispers in Eternal Darkness was pitch-perfect to set me on edge. I greatly preferred the reality warping insanity effects to the metagame ones. The bathtub bit was a cheap scare, but it worked on me just fine.

The Hotel scene in Vampire: Bloodlines always deserves mention. I spent most of that level completely unnerved.

    This is true.
I rented the game not really understanding what I was getting into. The initial sequence of being chased, and finally killed, by fleshy midgets wielding knives left me scared shitless.

Looking back now I would love to see the first Silent Hill remade, but not with all the junk from the movie. Just take the game, give it new textures and a slightly better draw distance, and I'll buy it again.

Those dogs. Does diminish the moment a bit.
In the school, they replace them with those child-shaped clawed grub things, which works reasonably, I guess.
I would kill for an uncensored PAL Silent Hill, though.

No, it's the clawed grub things that kill you in the opening, which I referred to as 'turkeydemons', 'cause they looked like plucked turkeys with big claws. The texture also made them look like they had a massive belly-tethered phallus too, which just made me MORE freaked out by them.

They're in the NTSC versions too, though I think there are only one or two of them, in the sewers.

The first time I played through Silent Hill 1, the disc was scratched which caused glitches in the nurses' animations. It turns out the nurses are infinitely more scary when they seize and twitch in ungodly ways while moving toward you.

But still, the scariest part of the game (and this really says something about it) is
The long walk to the school, just you and the darkness and the static
