Retro Remakes: One Step Forward, One Step Back

This year, Capcom took a bold but brilliant move in remaking two of their most popular franchises, in two different graphical styles.

With Bionic Commando Rearmed, the original game got a HD facelift while receiving some modernized performance tweaks and additions. With Megaman 9, Capcom went a few steps backward to recreate the Blue Bomber's 8 bit adventures, from the graphics and music and the unmerciful difficulty.

So in this thread, take two of your favorite games, and choose which one you'd like to see get the BC:R treatment (HD graphics, tweaks) and which you'd like to see go back to its 8 bit to 16 bit roots (MM9).

1. The HD Treatment:

Blaster Master

A friend gave me this choice out of the blue when I asked him this question, but I liked it so much I'm making it my own. Blaster Master would totally rock with a HD 2D remake, with just a few tweaks here and there. I don't remember it being too difficult aside from some of the bosses.

1. The Retro Treatment:

Final Fantasy:

Just to clarify, I'm not asking that one of the original games gets remade for the umpteenth time, but instead I would love an original FF story and setting using the old 16 bit style last seen in FFVI. I know there's still a few original titles that use sprites (FFXII: Revenant Wings), but none of them use the old ATB system. I want an FF game that looks and plays like the first six titles, maybe with a new job or relic-based system, and perhaps some animated enemies too.

I'd love to see a Prince of Persia game that integrates all of the elements from the new games (well, maybe not the emo prince) into a 2D platformer resembling the original PoP.

I'd kind of like to see a HD update to Wonderboy in Monsterland. How many heros are polite enough to knock on an enemy's door before entering to destroy them?

I wish EA would resurrect Road Rash, catchy rockin' ethnic tunes and all. I would love to have some next gen high octane motorcycle combat, only with less Lucky Luc. :x Maybe throw in a story to the madness.

I'd love to see an HD revival of River City Ransom. Modernize the RPG elements just a little, keep the art style but add crisper textures and more fluid animation -- maybe even make it 2D-plane 3D (a'la SFIV) to solve the hit-detection issues that usually crop up in 2D beat-em-ups. Just preserve just about everything else from the original gameplay (and especially the original script, characterization, art style and music), and you've got something.

I hope the OP knows that they did in fact make a sequel to FFIV using a tweaked FFIV Advance engine, and that game is most likely getting a wiiware port in the near future. :P

I'm aware of the sequel, not completely sure if that qualifies for my dream project or not. And the wiiware port is just a rumor, but hopefully it ends up true.

And hopefully you won't have to buy each episode individually through DLC either.

What would I like a 3D remake of?

Hmm. I'll have to think about that one for a moment.

I'm having a seriously difficult time thinking of a retro game that I truly enjoyed that doesn't already have some sort of modern equivalent.

And my choice for stepping back in time, like most is Sonic. However, we've gotten 3 bitchin' Sonic Advance titles, 2 awesome Sonic Rush titles, and a totally cool Neo Geo Pocket title, so I'm not gonna mention Sonic.

    I...I'm at a loss. :(

Wasn't there an updated sequel to Oregon Trail where it was revealed that the westward migration was really a test for humanity, and while some wagons were loaded down with food, others had just a bunch of wagon axles, while others had only men, etc?

Or am I confusing it with another franchise?
Seriously, though, how fucking cool would Fallout Trail be?

Which original game did you like better? I was a big fan of Mega Man back in the day and had scarcely even heard of Bionic Commando. Not surprisingly, I loved MM9 and was kind of meh about Bionic Commando.

Since it was(at least in the US) the first Metroidvania-style Castlevania, I'd like to see Castlevania II: Simon's Quest given the remake treatment, ideally on the DS or PSP. With the addition of modern graphics, a better translation and NPCs who don't lie to you, I feel that it would complement the modern Castlevania games quite well. Also, maybe make the day/night cycle less abrupt, and put an actual duck in the graveyard as a secret Easter Egg for the fans

I just want to second the call for an HD update for the original Blaster Master, in 2d of course. I loved that game as a kid, even if I never actually beat it.

As for other games, I want a full 3d remake of the old Aces of the Pacific or Aces Over Europe games. It's been way too long since I've been able to play a good, somewhat arcady combat flight sim. Make it somewhat like the Ace Combat series except with World War II fighters and a much less cheesy story. :)

I'm wondering if we won't get a New Super Mario All-Stars within the lifetime of the DS. Now that GBA games are harder and harder to come by, the Mario Advance Series will soon have netted Nintendo all the money it's going to. It would take minimal effort on their part to just bundle all the Mario Advance games onto one DS cart or go a step further and redo the graphics for the first four Mario games.

They could even do a sequel where they did the same to the Mario Land series.

At any rate, I'm going to say Sonic is easily the most in need of a new retro game. Even the 2D Sonic games that haven't been horrible (like the Rush series) don't have classic Sonic gameplay. They have something that sort of approximates it (but not really). The last Sonic game to actually have classic Sonic gameplay was Sonic Pocket Adventure and that was almost ten years ago. Sonic gameplay is about momentum, not speed; modern Sonic engines get that wrong.

I'd also like to see an HD remake of Mortal Kombat 2 because it would look hilarious.
