Wireless Headset for PC gaming (Bluetooth question)?

The Dude With HerpesThe Dude With Herpes Lehi, UTRegistered User regular
This should be a quick and easy question:

I've got a Bluetooth headset for my phone, and I was wondering if I bought the chip for my laptop to enable Bluetooth could I use that headset for things like TF2 and Vent/TS?

Does it work that easily?

I just ask because I hate hate hate cables and the only two headsets I have for my PC are wired and it bugs me.

Do people do this? Is it even possible?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I did it with my laptop's built-in bluetooth and a friend's headset that he got with his phone but didn't want. It was pretty easy once I got it figured out. Normal pairing codes for the headsets are 0000.

Quality is going to be poor to middling and keeping the battery charged is going to be annoying depending on how long you normally play TF2 or use vent for. Wired headset is going to be superior in every way unless you're using it for very short periods at a time in low noise environments and you have a noise canceling bluetooth.

Yeah I wouldn't really expect it to be as good of quality as a wired headset; I just wanted to know if it would even work.

When I bought my laptop I left off the bluetooth chip option to save some cash, and I've been looking for an excuse to get it since.

If the quality really is terrible then at least I'll be able to wirelessly sync my phone. So that's something.

Just out of curiosity though; take for example the wireless headset for the 360, for xbox live. I'm not sure if it's bluetooth or not, but is the quality on it so bad? Because I was considering picking that up eventually too.

The 360 doesn't use Bluetooth, but Microsoft's own wireless thingy. With this thing, you'll be able to use wireless 360 controllers and headsets.

I actually have that adapter. I bought it to use the 360 controller with FFXI but the control software doesn't read the triggers correctly so it's kind of useless for that purpose.

I suppose it would be handy for the wireless headset however, if I were to buy one anyway. The biggest problem is that I have my 360 hooked up on my desk with the same monitor I use for my laptop (28" 1080p lcd woot), and one of the major failings of the adapter is that it can't override the 360 and you can't "disable" turning on your 360 when you turn on the controller. So to use the controller with your PC if you have it near a 360 you have to unplug your 360 completely. It's a major pain in the ass.

I think I'll just give the bluetooth a shot for now. The adapter is only $20 with shipping (the chip I'm missing rather), so it's not a big investment if it's not too hot.

That's only in games that use DirectInput. In games that use XInput (most new PC games and all Games for Windows branded games) the triggers can be used independently. And you can always use Xpadder to have the triggers emulate keyboard buttons.

It's an actual chip. I don't want a usb dongle thingy. I just want it in the system.
