[GAME ON] Warcraft 3 custom maps. If we don't play DotA they can't hurt us

ORIGINAL POST:
A buddy and I got back into War3 recently and thought we'd give some mods a chance. Looks like there is quite the extensive library; however, it's hard to find out what most people play, what's worth trying, and how to get into that scene.
It was easy enough to figure out that DotA is the most popular on battlenet, but after attempting that a couple times it was quite clear that much training was required before going online. So we tried co-op vs the computer... the computer kicked our asses repeatedly.

Are custom maps played on other servers or is DotA basically THE war3 mod of choice?

If there isn't an online community for non-DotAs then perhaps we could settle for mods that are intended for 2 players (coop or vs.) I would prefer the "hero defense" game type but would also be interested in other stuff. any suggestions?
This thread is for those of you with WC3 and Frozen Throne and missed the whole custom map scene. Warcraft3 was great on it's own merrit, but if you haven't played some custom maps you should feel ashamed. This is your chance to redeem yourself!

There are tons of modified game styles to choose from. The game types I am currently interested in are Hero Defense (AOS/DOTA style), Tower Defense, RPG, and Hero Arena. Feel free to suggest custom maps for some Game On action. There really is way too much out there to pick from, but if we can narrow it down to some of the better maps then we're sure to have a great lineup.

We're hoping to find mostly noobs to discover these mods with but if there are some veterans willing to join you're welcome as long as you help us learn and forgive our catastrauphic 'first bloods'. I would suggest we start with an AOS game. It's a simplified Hero Defense style map that teaches some of the basic strategies and hopefully from there we can work our way up to some of the more difficult maps like DotA.

Game Time: 7:00pm (GMT - Mountain Time)
Hamachi v1.0.3.0: network: WC3pa password: wang
Ventrilo 3.0.1: Dota 1
Warcraft3 & Frozeen Throne version 1.22a

HERO DEFENSE
DOTA
DotA, short for Defense of the Ancients, is a team strategy where players can choose sides and his own hero. There are two sides on the games, Sentinel and Scourge. Players on the same side fight the other players on the opposing side to win the game. The objective of the games is to destroy the opponents’ base together with AI controlled units called creeps. Heroes start at level 1 and levels up to level 25. Heroes level up during the game while killing opposing heroes and creeps. Heroes gain skill when they gain additional levels.

Obligatory Basshunter DotA video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OzWIFX8M-Y

It is highly recommended that you practice playing DOTA with AI opponents or you will get be ridiculed beyond comprehesion. The following classes are relatively easy heroes to learn the basics with: razor, kardel, zeus, lina, sniper, troll, lion, gondar, bone fletcher.
dotaheroeskv9.jpg

Other Hero Defense type maps include 3 Corridors and AOS, both of which are similar to DOTA with smaller learning curves.

AOS:
aosyy1.jpg

HERO ARENA
Hero Arena is a game style where each person chooses a hero to level up as they fight the other team's heroes. The concept is similar to DOTA without the AI bases and creeps.

TOWER DEFENSE
Tower defense is a game style where people build and upgrade a variety of towers in various formations in an attempt to kill enemy AI creeps before passing through your defenses. These maps can be everyone for themselves, team vs team, or everyone agaist the computer.
towerdefenself1.jpg

RPG
RPG game types are either custom RPGs built from creative minds or clones of famous RPGs like Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, Diablo, etc. These are usually coop games comprised of a small party of heroes working together to accomplish quests.
rpgjt0.jpg

We will be playing these custom games via an application called Hamachi. Hamachi is a centrally-managed zero-configuration virtual private network (VPN) freeware application capable of establishing direct links between computers that are behind NAT firewalls without requiring reconfiguration (in most cases); in other words, it establishes a connection over the Internet that very closely emulates the connection that would exist if the computers were connected over a local area network.
Hamachi Compatibility:
Microsoft Windows (Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista only. Due to the way that Hamachi creates the virtual network adapter, Windows 95/98/ME/NT cannot be supported)
Linux 2.4 or newer (console-only) (x86 and nokia770/arm binary only) (unofficial GUI front-end: hamachi-gui)
Mac OS X (console-only) (ppc binary - runs on Intel Macs via Rosetta) (unofficial GUI front-end: HamachiX)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, didn't read your whole post. Not a DotA fan eh? I like Hero Line Wars, Rabbits vs Sheep, WoW arena (yes it really exists), Gem TD (2nd most favorite), Blue TD, Green TD, and Footman Soldiers v5.4 . There's a few more TDs that I like to play. Soldier TD is alright. There's a hockey TD that's cool too. There's a SC mod as well.

I was always a big fan of Footman Frenzy. I loved using that Lich in that, so awesome to see little numbers fill up half the screen at higher levels.

I had the luck to play Warcraft 3 a little while after The Frozen Throne came out, when a whole bunch of excellent maps had come out but DOTA hadn't yet grown to dominate everything. How bad is it now?

    Epicwar.com for WC3 custom maps.

I personally really enjoy playing Impossible Bosses (though I have yet to find a group who can beat it.) I play random tower defenses and tower wars (my favorite TD is Power Towers, ingenious system created by this guy, and I really like Forbidden Elements Tower Wars for TWs.), I like playing fortress survival for the defensive esque games. I use to play a lot of NotD or SWAT when I use to run with a group of friends, however I haven't played that in forever. I also really enjoy playing Warlocks, but I am anything but the best at the game (though me and my friend together are pretty decent.) Oh, we also play the fuck out of Rabbits v. Sheep, terribly fun game, though we've essentially created a fool proof strategy that equates in a win, so we've started to turn off the middle shop, but people always bitch then, whatever. Anyways, I'm generally up for playing any custom map (outside of DotA, you can find plenty of other people to play with you), that's how I found some of the best custom maps I own. I haven't gotten on in a while, but I believe I'm Trage47 on U.S. East, I might be Samoris, as I said, it's been a while since I logged on (recently I've just been playing lan games on Hamachi with friends.)

Also, you might want to change the title to WC3 maps or custom games, I don't think people generally think of them as mods, they probably think of spoofers, auto refreshes, latency checkers and such.

Yeah those aren't really mods. They are just making use of Warcraft 3's powerful map editor.

My favorite for playing with friends was Commando Wars if you can find it, an old Starcraft favorite. There's some great DoTA variants which were lost to time as well. You should definately check out Warlocks since it's a newer still being developed map which is great for shorthanded play. Queue video.

Also fun fact I worked on an actual Warcraft 3 mod before the game first came out, it was actually a large production that eventually fell apart. Anyways one of the mod team's artists basically designed the Alchemist hero exactly, and then it later appeared in Warcraft 3 via patch much after the project fell apart. Hrmmm.

It's not that we don't like DOTA. It's a hell of a lot of fun. Problem is the learning curve is a little too steep since most people that still play it are lifers. We tried it with AI (us vs. 1 easy comp.) He whooped us good.

So now we're looking for other mods that may be similar and playable or tatally different.

Does the Hamachi community have more noobs than battlenet? If so, I wouldn't mind trying DOTA again there.

My absolute favorite WarCraft III map is some World of Warcraft RPG type thing. Basically, horde and alliance compete to see who can complete the most quests and defeat the final boss first. IMHO, it's far more fun to play it coop over LAN, though. It's a lot more relaxed and epic.

Man, I have had so much fun with Warcraft 3 custom maps.

My favourite ones were probably the lord of the rings style strategy maps. Silmarillion and Second Age were probably the best ones.

Basically you would start with a complete kingdom with a few cities. Every couple of minutes a certain number of soldiers spawn in each of your cities and something like every five minutes you are given the option to upgrade one of your cities, getting more soldiers. Every player starts with several heroes from their faction that once killed are permanently dead.

There were loads of players needed, so I never got to play it as much as I wanted. Tons of fun.

I actually even designed a map by this model myself. It was called Arozeth wars, as a kind of parody on the then popular Azeroth wars that was a very flawed map in my opinion.

It basically represented an alternate universe azeroth around the time of Warcraft 3. Four sides with 12 factions including Night elves, Orcs, Centaur, Troll, Humans, Undead and so on, with some of the alliances shifted (the humans sided with trolls and high elves sided with the demons and undead, for example).

I put a lot of effort into it, including making 200 custom units. Problem was I never put any effort into getting it popular, and I never managed to get 12 players to finish a whole game. Pity that, it was a better thought out map than many of the ones circulating on battlenet.

Vic, I played tons of games like the one you're talking about. I loved Lord of the Rings before, I stopped playing it a while ago, I played Lordaeron Tactics, and I played Silmarillion and the Second Age. I think I still have most of those maps on my computer fi you'd be up for playing them. Lordaeron Tactics is pretty fairly balanced right now, theres a few bugs that need to be fixed, but overall its still a ton of fun.

i wonder how much life the war3 modding scene still has left in it.

Perhaps their might be enough interest in some of these custom maps to have a weekly map for some Game On action? If so, is the best medium for it battlenet or this Hamachi I keep hearing about?

To bad some idiot though Wintermaul was better off having every wave get ridiculous health regen, I mean whats the point in mazing with basic towers if they can't even nudge the health bar?

I've never actually seen a game hosted, but playing MooMoo with friends is fun. It's one of those hero seige type maps with interesting heroes.

Also Happyville, theres a bunch of different game variants that unlock as you play more games, the gist of it is that you control one guy from a 3rd person camera and you run around a town trying to find and kill the unhappy person and the unhappy person has to kill the happy people.
You can't tell who's happy and who's unhappy and if you're happy and kill another happy person you'll die in 10 seconds.

    I'm a terrible salesman but it's fun.

if you like the melee gameplay at all, there should be an Art of Defense map floating out there (based on the starcraft ones). It is not nearly as fun/hard as the starcraft ones, but it is decent. Although, if you play just two people, I don't think you'll be able to beat it at all.

You can finish it! It's a great map, I agree. It's tougher in groups, 'cause then not everyone can get every upgrade. That's when you need Teamwork though, right?

Also for fun "survival" maps that work in groups, my quicklist:

    SWAT:Aftermath

    NOTD: Aftermath

    Jurassic Park: Aftermath

    And my favorite,
    Aftermath: Aftermath

Yep. Enemies will keep coming after you and you do your best to stay alive. If you die, game over for you (Well, you can revive in SWAT, not the others). None of these have any "safe" zones or anything...so, Survival.
