I just watched the original pilot for 30 Rock. Man it's a good thing they switched out Rachel Dratch. She's so awful. They also had someone else playing Cerie who was a lot worse than who they ended up with.
I keep hoping that Liz somehow accidently kills Hayek. Probably because after stealing a baby and drugging a doctor, she needs to step up her felonies here.

they didn't really "switch her out" so much as she isn't in episodes anymore. she played bit parts here and there because her and tina are friends, as I recall.

I'm talking about the original pilot (which was never aired) where Rachel Dratch was Jenna. From Wikipedia:
Rachel Dratch, Fey's longtime comedy partner and fellow SNL alumna, was originally cast to portray Jenna. Dratch played the role in the show's original pilot, but in August 2006, Jane Krakowski was announced as Dratch's replacement, with Dratch remaining involved in the show playing various characters. Fey explained the change by noting that Dratch was "better-suited to playing a variety of eccentric side characters", and that the role of Jenna was more of a straight-ahead acting part. Although Fey went on to say that "Rachel and I were both very excited about this new direction", Dratch said that she was not happy with the media's depiction of the change as a demotion. Dratch was skeptical about the reasons she was given for the change, and was not happy with the reduction in the number of episodes in which she would appear.

oh I'm sorry, I misunderstood.
edit - actually I didn't know that. which is odd since I've watched the first season more than once. hrm.
I was just telling my friend that I can't wait for Boobs Hayek to leave the show and end that stupid side story, and what do you know, the wench is off to puerto rico! thank god.
Her abuela allowed us the Generalissimo. That and boobs can account for a multitude of sins.
I guess the pilot isn't a part of the first season?
Pilot can sometimes mean different things. Sometimes it can just mean the first episode of a series, but it more specifically refers to the sort of "test show" that gets made before a show is picked up by a network. It's like the audition tape for the show, and often that ends up being the first episode aired. Other times once a network buys the show they ask for reshoots or changes and the original pilot never airs. That's what happened with 30 Rock. After the original pilot was made, there were some casting changes and reshoots. The new version is what saw air as 30 Rock episode One - the original can be found on the intertubular highway for the curious. It's pretty much the same, and I think many of the scenes weren't reshot. Mostly just the ones involving Jenna and Cerie who were both recast.
that part made the episode for me. i couldnt breathe from laughing so hard

I'm glad they had the balls to do NI. I'm sure they wouldn't have been allowed to do a G but it still made me glad. the slightest hint of edge but it keeps me satisfied.

I think they could have gone all the way to the second G even. I know its Network TV but if South Park can do the naggers joke

Okay, it's been in my head for a solid day now, and I am calling it here and now: the stretch from "JENNA NEEDS TO SLEEP OR SHE'S GOING TO DIE!" to "BITENUKER!" is what they're going to submit to the Emmy people next time around, and it's going to win.
Or at least it will if I ran the Emmys.

Superlative episode.
Liz's Princess Leia Costume for the win.

Can someone explain the "bitenuker" joke to me? I didn't get it at all. A French Belgian would pronounce it ____ ?" The pronunciation didn't evoke anything for me.

According to Google:
Bête neuker. Bête is French for stupid, idiotic or silly and neuker is Dutch for fucker

Thanks. Doesn't really make much sense though, as a French person would NOT pronounce it that way. It would be closer to "Beet nukay". Unless they really sound vastly different in Belgium. Either way it's a pretty oddly niche joke.
Edit: Bête also means beast which I think is funnier.

South Park's on cable, so it can get away with a lot more than anything on network TV.

Yet it's still funny even if you don't understand the translation (or even believe there is one) if only because Jack then apologizes to "Ms. LaRouche-Vanderhoot" immediately afterward.
Also, after watching it again "They knew what a Hot Richard was?" is really damn funny.

30 Rock does that every so often. They make a joke sometimes that, if you're sufficiently smart and paying attention, you'll get the joke early or find some extra bonus joke. If you're not, they'll make a joke everyone's going to get along the same lines at some later point.
A good example would be the Hapsburg thing. If you already knew about the Hapsburgs, you might have been able to see the inbreeding joke coming as soon as Jack mentioned the name. If you did, it wouldn't have ruined the sight gag of Gerhardt showing up, but if you didn't, there's the joke for you anyway, everybody gets to laugh now. I happened to know about the Hapsburgs, and recognized the name, but wasn't able to recall the inbreeding part in time.

I'm pretty sure she was originally cast as Jenna.

I was hoping for murder, though arson I guess is a close second.
And a big part of what's funny about "N.. I.." is that they don't have to go any further than that. And yeah Toof was awesome there.
I must have missed his departure
