Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy, November 24th

edited November 2008 in Debate and/or Discourse
So after more than a decade, hiring, firing and re-hiring members to form a patchwork session group, song debuts in videogames, Axl Rose has finally decided to release his masturbatory magnum opus 'Chinese Democracy' onto a frightened world

Think it will actually come out this time?

Shackler's Revenge was complete ass. I have little desire to sample the rest. If I get a hankering for some GnR, I'll pop in some Appetite for Destruction.

Hey, at least it has a nice screamy bit before the rest of the song kicks in.

Personally I think it's just generic enough to hit the top of the rock charts. Do I detect a hint of Nickelback in there?

Pretty much. Two musical acts introduced me to the English language: Nas, and GnR. Everyone crap talks GnR for their zany antics, but they'll always be a staple in my 'I smile when I hear this song' repertoire.

The new single is horrible, as in it actually taints old gnr!

I really like the songs Madagascar and There Was A Time (At least the live and leaked versions so far, haven't heard the album version)... so I have hope there may be one or two decent songs on the album, this song out now is so horribly generic and the chorus is totally missing in action.

They played the new single in the radio today. Horrible, horrible music. I was never a huge fan of GnR, but I could always appreciate their work. This, I don't know, it's very dull and otherwise lacking in creativity. It might as well be some shitty nu metal band for all I know.

I like Guns and Roses about as much as being vomited on by the homeless, but I've got a friend that's absolutely crazy about them. I have no interest in the music, but it'll be interesting to see how this vaporware of a CD splits the fanbase. I hear some of those people can make NMA looks like a bunch of civilized and open-minded adults that like to consult maturely about the Fallout series.

I haven't listened to GNR for years, although I always liked them as a teenager, and I still enjoy it if Don't Cry or something comes on the radio unexpectedly (Kind of like how I never, ever listen to Stairway to Heaven anymore - I want to enjoy it when it comes around, not get burnt out on it). I've been loosely following Chinese Democracy since before I graduated from high school, and I liked a few of the earlier releases (Madagascar) at the time.

That said, this single fucking sucks. If this is what's supposed to get us excited enough to buy the album I'd hate to hear the tracks they weren't as confident with. I've got lots of other things I could spend $15 on. Velvet Revolver was much better than this. Hell, Snakepit was better than this.

Never got to see GnR live, but when I saw Velvet Revolver they did two GnR songs (I think they were 'It's so Easy' and 'Don't Cry') - it was absolutely fucking awesome. And 'Coma' off Use Your Illusion I still ranks as one of my favorite songs ever.

I will probably pick the CD up, but I don't hold out high hopes for it. It's been in development for what, 10 years? How could it possibly live up to any expectations? But hell, GnR's one of my favorite bands, I'll give it a chance.

I wonder if Rock Band will put out the CD, since they're all up in Shackler's Revenge's stuff.

I hope not. That would mean a longer wait for albums that matter, like Texas Flood and The Colour and the Shape.

Sounds like what I'd imagined- Axl Rose singing with a Guns N Roses cover band that sounds like some kid playing licks out of a book on garageband coupled with 1993 "soundscapes" that have more to do with bad mashups than My Bloody Valentine.

If the rest of the album is like this I don't see it having any defenders anywhere; I mean even The Mars Volta have some interesting musical ideas, which is why they have fans that put up with the immense wankery. I'm not sure I hear any talent making up for it in this single.

So Use Your Illusion II had a song on it called "14 Years", which is how long it has taken to record a follow up. Interesting.

The album definitely doesn't sound good enough to justify 14 years of work. Hell, if it had been released with the current material a normal amount of time after Use Your Illusion, it would've probably been considered just okay. On top of that, releasing it exclusively at one store? Really?

The CD only being sold at one store may seem like a weird move, but you have to consider the precedent here: the Eagles only sold their last CD at Walmart and it moved 680000 units on Week 1, which is a lot for the fucking Eagles. AC/DC did the same thing with their new CD and early projections have it selling 800000 units this week. I expect this will put up similar numbers. As lame as the single is, it's obviously radio-ready and sounds pretty similar to the other generic rock bands out there (Nickelback, Hinder, Puddle of Mudd, etc). It'll get a lot of play, like it or not.

I'm in the "not" category, but at least I'll get a free soda out of it.

Is Guns N Roses really big enough to still matter after 14 years even without all the bullshit? I mean as much as they wanted to be, they weren't quite Aerosmith or Led Zep.

Well, even if they were a great band (which I think they were), this is really just an Axl Rose solo album. It's not GnR at all.

He's not even the good part of GnR. He's the part that I tolerated to get to the tasty guitar.

Who knows whether the CD will actually be popular in the long run but I wouldn't be surprised if it pushes a lot of copies. It'll have a big debut at the very least, although if the album really sucks it'll drop like a fly. I think you'll get a lot of people who are curious to see if the wait was worth it, and you'll get a lot of the guys who grew up listening to Appetite for Destruction who are old now.
