Well, in my last thread, I was talking about getting files off of my hard drive from a busted computer.
Well, long story short, I picked up a hard drive enclosure to get into the drive, and it worked. FOR THE MOST PART.
The problem is, is that I can't access anything that was located in the administrators folders (i was running XP), and subsequently the desktop folder where the most important documents that I need are stored.
Essentially, I really really really need to get around this, can anybody give me a hand?
You'll probably need to take ownership of everything on that drive.
1. Disable "Simple File Sharing" in XP
2. Right-click the root folder that's affected (D :\Documents and Settings\Administrator or whatever) and pick Sharing and Security
3. Go to Security tab
At this point it may tell you that permissions are broken and prompt you to repair them. If that works, you're done. If not:
4. Hit "Advanced" - then go to the "Owner" tab.
5. Highlight your account in the bottom pane, check "Replace owner on all subcontainers and objects"
6. Hit OK, and wait while it grinds away.
7. OK your way back out. It should work now.

can I do this without placing the drive back in the computer?
Or do I have to go back in there first?
Thanks so far, you have no idea how much you're helping me here.

Nope, you can do this with it hooked up externally. I assume the drive is physically OK, and you're not worried about it dying out mid-copy?

Major issue: I can't find a way to disable simple file sharing.
I can't find it in the folder options anywhere.
Open up a folder (C: drive, whichever, doesn't matter)
Go to Tools -> Folder Options... on the menu.
Click the View tab.
Scroll down to the bottom of the options, it's the last one.
It's all good now.
I switched the whole operation over to a computer with XP pro (my near-dead at the time laptop) to finish the job.
Everything mentioned by PeregrineFalcon worked perfectly.
Thank you so much. Seriously. I was pretty much done for up until a few hours ago.

The drive works fine, it's my old MOBO that died and it's not even worth it to replace it.
But we're doing a mad grab through my computer now, and getting a new tower tomorrow for cheaper than I was priced a new mobo.
And the new tower is more powerful than the old one.
I'll let you know how this all turns out!
