They were very clear about that at PAX. The game is still extremely rough, the beta version has a lot of placeholder graphics, and they fully expect the beta to be little to no fun whatsoever at this point.
We need more than that! This is the first non-Blizzard PC game I've really been following in a long time. Poor TBS.
Well I only had time to play for about 20 min before I had to head out the door tonight. A Lot of options are not enabled right now. Some of the highlights are random enemies on the world map seam to spawn from lairs that you can conquer, a build your own units like Gal Civ 2 and random events spawned in the world.
Are there war bears? This is not a big deal to me, but it is a key for my cousin, who fell in love with them in the MoM demo like 16 years ago.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.
That looks more like an Ultima (~6) joke than a Master of Magic joke. The giveaway is Lord Frogboy presents.

Generally, yes. If you have played Gal Civ 2 or Master of Orion 2, this should be broadly similar to that type of game. It would also be strongly reminicient of the Civ series of games, but with magic and tactical, turn based combat.
Unfortunately for me, the current state of the beta hates both my desktop and my laptop for entirely different reasons. I can actually get it to launch on my desktop but there are horrible graphic issues with the game UI. Buttons appear distorted and misplaced, and many are not clickable.
Fortunately, the stardock guys seem fairly active on their forum and they're pursuing the bug reports and logs that people are posting. I really hope the game is playable for me soon. I've tried it on my desktop and two different laptops and so far there have been showstopping issues that keep me from playing it on any real level. The closest I have gotten is one time on my desktop it loaded far enough to start a town, wander the map a little, sometimes successfully interact with some of the points of interest, and that was about it.
And when I say things are 'unclickable' i mean the vast majority of the UI is busted for me, including nearly every single town and sovereign option and ability, as well as every single audio, video, and gameplay option in the options menu. I understand that's not "correct" and the game "should" be more functional than that, even in this very early beta state. Some players are able to create custom units and conquer enemy troops and towns, and research spells. Unfortunately for my specific situation it seems to be extra busted.
But, a stardock rep responded to my error log post, and said they believe they know the cause of my specific issue, so that bodes well for my ability to play in the 'near' future.

I stardock.
Yeah, they were pretty responsive about Demigod and fixing it's bugs and whatnot, these guys are great.
I was going to head over here to try to figure if I should pick this up or possibly wait for Beta 2 (I've had it added to my cart a few times already) as I haven't played the classics of the genre and am not sure if this is for me.... but now reading over the last few pages has only pushed me closer to getting into this first beta. I'll probably have ordered it by tonight and found an IRC client to get over to their channel >_> *Tries to promise self this will be his last purchase for a while*
If you don't pre-order by the end of Sept, it was already announced that you will not play the game this year. Anyone who pre-orders after the end of the month will have to wait for the next beta stage, which will be in early 2010.
I'll reiterate that beta 1 is not fun! Its barebones crash and UI testing, the only part of the core game there is town building, unit design and research. Hell it doesn't have any graphics at this point :P
It may not be that fun yet, but I made it through and managed to hunt down the other Sovereigns (made even easier by finding two +Max HP rings right at the start) to see the victory screen, so that was fun enough I've already had a few crashes and a hangup, but I guess that's what this is for, and beta 1A should be in another week and a half right? I was overwhelmed to say the least by Gal Civ 2's demo, but hopefully I can actually get into these 4X games with Elemental.
just a little bump on this old thread for some nice news.
The next beta phase (1G) was released this week and with it stardock will be letting in a new batch ofl pre-orders into the beta on thursday march 4th, for anyone who pre-orders before that date. Note: they do charge you for the full game when you get into the beta.
the games really looking to become an awesome thing, so if you have some faith in stardock and the elemental dev team, and love this sort of game than I suggest you pre-order asap.
Yeah, according to the developer journals it's August this year or, if they miss that, February of next year. They say they are on track for the August release.
Something about the art style for this game bugs me. I can't figure out exactly what though. It's kind of too drab/too white. I think the colors look somewhat washed-out.
Looks like August 26 is the target according to Gamespot or the horse's mouth. Of course, the beta will be reopened soon (they say) for pre-orders so I guess anyone interested could start much sooner than that.
This will be the best thing...been a long time since I've seen a game with a soul. Similarly, it's been a long time since I've been so excited for a game.
I REALLY WANNA PREORDER FOR BETA ACCESS
...but also...no...beta access spoils you. You never have a fresh experience with it!
Well, I mean, Age of Wonders 2 is pretty darn close to MoM, so I've been getting my fix, but damn. WONT. They better include the Lycanthropy spell, and make Weapon Immunity actually be as impressive as it sounds.
Sorry to say I've never played Master of Magic. Did I miss awesomeness? (Am trying to rectify this by way of DOSbox though)
I've seen a few videos of the producer playing the current Elemental beta. Looks interesting, and I like how the community gets to participate in the game design. In some cases this would be disastrous, but so far I've noticed a lot of useful contributions.

Mmmm.. very MoM.
Hope this doesn't keep me out of the beta. They said it wouldn't be billed until shipping.

Said video for reference.
I'm shocked no one has come up with a MoM type clone.

Though, to be fair, he did stop using that word so much fairly soon. Literally. :P
