Processor Problem?

I've recently had trouble with my computer and finally got it fixed. It isn't running as fast as it was when playing Team Fortress 2, so I recently looked at my System Properties on XP and I look at the General tab and notice that my processor is "1.24 GHz". The problem with this is that it should be around 2 GHz. What could have possibly of caused this?

Could be running hot, BIOS settings could be messed up.

Can you give us a make/model to look up the specs or is it a custom?

    Motherboard is Asus SocketA(462) A7N8X.
    Processor is Anthlon XP +2000(?).

I do not know the number for the processor as I'm currently unable to get to my desktop but that is what is shown when booting.

The odd thing is that my processor must have been overclocked to begin with unless its recognizing an incorrect processor.

I changed FSB setting to 133, which increased the processor speed to 1.66GHz. This didn't crash my computer or anything when attempting to run TF2. I then tried setting it to 166, as that would bring it to about 2GHz, which is what it normally was at. This made my computer reset itself upon entering a map in TF2. This is actually the problem I originally had and thought I "fixed." So I set it back to 133.

I even tried to update my BIOS but Asus apparently has no downloads for my motherboard.

If it is an Athlon XP 2000+ it should be running at 1.67 GHz.

This. With those Athlon XP's, as well as a number of other processors, you can't go by 2000+ and assume it's 2GHz. You have to look at the actual specs.

+1 to the "1.67GHz is correct" crowd, but Jesus man, upgrade that rig. I was pained playing TF2 on an old P4 2.8C, I can't imagine running it on an XP2000+.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.

With the Athlon XP all the way up till the very last Althon64's the last number (in this case 2000) is Performance rating. In this case your CPU should be running at 1.66 Ghz. The 100Mhz (200DDR) fsb is the default speed for this gen so you have to manually change it to 133 (266 DDR). With a 166 FSB you would be close to a 2400+ but probably would be considered higher because that speed didn't use the 333 FSB.

Trust me, I'd gladly upgrade if I had the money. The problem is that I dont think it actually is an Athlon XP 2000, as it wouldn't make sense on why it would have been originally(several years ago) 2GHz and not all of a sudden(in the past month) it got switched to 1.24.

Is this a home built computer? If you can change the bus speed in the BIOS it means that whomever built this was thinking the same way as you. AthlonXP 2000+ must mean it is supposed to run at 2GHz. Chances are at this age it didn't like to be overclocked that high and one day when you had to reset the computer (probably had to do it two or three times before it would boot correctly) it reset the cmos. When that happened it defaulted to a 200Mhz FSB.

I would be happy if I was you, you have been running with a 16% OC for god knows how long.

Actually I never assumed 2000 = 2GHz, I've just alway seen a number that was roughly 2GHz when looking at my System Properties. The problem I have with switching my FSB to 166 is that it displays 2.08GHz, which I know was not the original number.

Whoah guys, no one has mentioned how modern processors clock themselves down when not in use? Your processor may jsut be reporting a lower speed because you're checking it when it's idle.

Well two things. First It should say your model number (Athlon XP 2000+) then under that it should say the speed.

If you are just not seeing the Athlon XP 2000+ That crap happens and means nothing.
