Cuts on the side of my mouth?

I can't really describe this...no not like joker. I'm sure everyone has had them one time or another. When the sides of your mouth by your lips is dry and cracked and you open up your mouth too much and the skin splits?

Anyway it's been a hassle to eat, I've been keeping chap stick on it 24/7 but it isn't really getting better. Does anyone have any ideas. And no it's not a cold sore/herpes/ etc.

Try Neutrogena. It's heavy-duty moisturizer that works pretty much everywhere; it's a trifle oily and tastes unappetizing, so you'll have no problem leaving it alone while it does its thing. Not messing with it is crucial to breaking the dry-ow-dry-owowow-moredry cycle.

Put Vaseline on the corners of your mouth when you go to sleep. Your lips can get pretty dry through the night, and it'll keep them from drying out.

Try Vaseline Intensive Rescue Extra Strength lotion, and then Blistex.

It worked, and still works for me, because I used to have severe cracking due to licking it all the time. And because I have dark skin, the hyperpigmentation gave me really deep scarring on the sides of my mouth, but they're fading now.

I don't have that problem anymore, though. :)

Mostly, just be gentle with it. Don't open your mouth super-wide (so no more blowjobs), don't touch it, and try to avoid spicy or caustic foods.

Regular chapstick really isn't great. Blistex is much better, but use whatever you can keep on your mouth constantly. Edit: I'm a big fan of Burt's Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm, but don't use the regular Burt's Bees if your lips are really chapped. The peppermint oil isn't good. /Edit. Drinking lots of water is a good idea, and if you lick your lips a lot, try to break yourself of that.

Oh, and when you feel your lips are all dried out and crackly, I know the temptation is to stretch them out and see what happens. Don't do that, just put on lip balm and leave it alone.

This is possibly unhelpful, but watch what you eat. Anything hugely spicy could irritate tissue. Anything with, I don't know, a hard flaky crust, for example, could cause small tears that you wouldn't even notice ordinarily, but which exacerbate the existing injury. Anything that must be consumed in very large bites, or that you open your mouth really wide for, is probably not a great idea.

You don't need to do a liquid diet, but play it safe. That helped a lot with me when a flossing attempt gone horribly wrong gave me a cut right at the side of my mouth.

Seriously chapstick is crap. Get yourself some blistex.
