Every time I download something in firefox it downloads in (in the download manager window/applet thing) and then it saves it and then it says "Scanning for Viruses"

The "Scanning for viruses" part can take (most of the time) longer then the actual download! For big files, it's unbearable - some times taking 30 or more minutes.

How do I disable this?

I would think it's your virus scanner and not Firefox that's causing this issue. Look through the settings of whatever Antivirus you use for "scan downloaded items" and disable it.

I've had this happen often, too. Quite a few times, I've simply cancelled it and the file itself hasn't been damaged or anything. For some reason, it seems to happen mostly when all the browsing windows are closed and it's just the Downloads window open. No idea why.

I shutdown and uninstalled AVG (free edition). It still does it even when it's no on the system.
