i was going through some old clothes and found my old DS phat in a pocket. i seriously thought i lost this thing eons ago, and so sold all my DS games in my frustration.
i loved this damn thing, and it's charging as i type. only thing is, i've missed out on over a years worth of games, plus some i never got to.
what i want is a decent list of fun DS games to be had at $20~ price point (per game), preferably.
list of games i sold:
super mario 64ds
new super mario bros
tetris ds
mario kart
metroid prime hunters
and some tony hawk game
the second phoenix wright
i finished those, but aside from one of the new pokemon games, i dunno what to pick up? i have $80 on my gamestop card, so i'm looking at 4-6 games i think.
Good NDS games for $20 or less (some of these are $5-$15) at Gamestop/EBgames:
Contra 4 - $20/$18 used Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow - $20/$18 used Castelvania Portrait of Ruin - $20/$18 used N+ - $20/$18 used Bangai-O Spirits - $20/$18 used Geometry Wars Galaxies - $20/$18 used Civilization Revolution - $20 new Kirby Canvas Curse - $20 used Meteos - $20 new, $13 used Elite Beat Agents - $12 used Phoenix Wright - $20 new/used Phoenix Wright T&T - $20/$18 used Phoenix Wright JFA - $13 used Picross DS - $20 new Space Invaders Extreme - $20 new, $15 used MegaMan ZX and ZX Advent - $20/$18 used Puzzle Quest - $20 new Rocket Slime - $15 new, $13 used Call of Duty 4 - $20/$18 used GRID - $20/$18 used Konami Classics Arcade Hits - $15 new Worms Open Warfare 2 - $20/$18 used Lunar Knights - $20 new/used Etrian Odyssey, Etrian Odyssey 2 - $20/$18 used Hotel Dusk - $20/$18 used Sonic Rush - can't find it, think it's like $10-$15 or something Metroid Prime Pinball - can't find it, but it should be $10-$15 at most Shiren the Wanderer - $20/$15 used Final Fantasy III - $20 used Diddy Kong Racing - $20 used Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ - $20/$15 used
That's all I got.
Personally I recommend Contra 4 and the Castlevanias, although everything there is all pretty good. Although I have probably 2/3 or 3/4 of this list personally, and I love just about all of my games.
Contra 4 and the Megaman ZX games and N+ are great for some difficult action gaming. The Castlevanias are classic Metroidvania style exploration/platforming/rpg elements. Bangai-O is very unique but basically kind of like a puzzle game crossed with a shmup. GeoWars Galaxies and Space Invaders Extreme are great shmups that're good for pickup and play style. Meteos, Picross, and Puzzle Quest are all great puzzle games. Worms Open Warfare 2 getrs a lot of love around here. Civ Revo is supposed to be a pretty good approximation of the console strategy games. There are some good RPGs (FFIII, Etrian 1 and 2) or.. sorta-RPGs like Lunar Knights and Rocket Slime, both of which are great. Shiren is one of the best modern Roguelikes. Konami Classics is good pickup/play bang for your buck with a ton of games, including Arcade versions of Gradius, Contra, Twinbee, Track and Field, Rush'n'Attack and some other greats. I have COD4 and consider it a really good portable FPS with excellent controls. GRID is a great NDS racer with online multi and a track editor. Kirby CC is an excellent platformer that makes excellent and intuitive use of the touch screen for control. edit: Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ is an intentionally campy yet really unique shmup
sweet christ, good list slash.
picked out some must-haves immediately.
is the geometry wars game for DS signifgantly different from the XBLA releases? or should i not bother?
edit: (i have worms and N+ for XBLA, and my brother has puzzle quest!) i never noticed the overlap between arcade to DS games.
Slash's list is full of win. I particularly recommend Contra, N+, Space Invaders Extreme, and Hotel Dusk (awesome noir adventure game that evokes the tone and feel of old pulp detective novels).
Geometry Wars is like the Wii release. It's different and more complex than GW1, but pales in comparison to GW2. I found all of the control schemes equally unusable, but someone who isn't left-handed might have better luck.
Nanostray 2 is ~$15, but if it doesn't make Slash's list then you should probably trust his recommendations more than my mention, since I believe he's actually played it and I haven't.
I'm still intending to though. Love that price for a 3D shoot 'em up.

As Prawn and Honky have mentioned, the NDS game "Geometry Wars Galaxies" is actually a different game altogether from the XBLA games, and is essentially a portable iteration of the Wii game.
What it is, is it takes Retro Evolved's gameplay and expands it over ~60 unique levels, a few more different enemies and "hazards" (like swirling vortexes), and really adds some extra depth and variety to the gameplay by giving you a Drone that you can set Behaviors to and level up over the course of the game. There's a 2 player mode as well, where I believe one player sets enemies and the other tries to survive them. Can't remember if there's a Coop mode like the wii version though. The game also comes packed with Retro Evolved in its entirety as well. All the games included are Wifi-compatible for leaderboards too.
The only caveat is that some people really take well to the controls and are completely capable of playing it that way, while others (like Prawn) just can't get used to the controls. It may be more difficult to get accustomed to it if you're already used to the dual analog XBLA games though. But if you take the time to get over the initial 'hump' of getting accustomed to the controls, I'd say it controls plenty well.
If you can "get into" this game, it's a great portable arcadey pickup/play game with plenty of content and an addictive nature. Plus there's replay value in going back and trying levels/galaxies with new types of drones. So if you click with the gameplay and with the controls, it's totally worth it. But if you can't get "into" it or can't get accustomed to the controls (like Prawn) then it may not take up as much play time as you'd like.

Actually, I have Nanostray 1 and 2, and actually I thoroughly enjoy both of them. However, it's kind of tough to make as a general recommendation though, because the two games, while good, don't really stand out much from the typical/average shmup in terms of what they do. The graphics are great but the style is merely okay, and there's no really strong 'hook' like in most modern shmups. Although the variety of weapons and subweapons are good for variety, and at N2 has the cool customizeable satellites to control. There is a 'combo' mechanic, but it's kind of weak in terms of adding that addictive spark to the gameplay. So as a standard shmup it's plenty fun but I think that unless you're a shmup fan you won't get much out of it.
Okay, I have a question about cheap DS games, since I'll be picking one up soon mostly for Chrono Trigger, and am looking at some older games. I'm a huge huge fan of Card Fighters Clash on the NGPC, to the point I almost picked up a DS at the game's release just for that, but the backlash for the game kinda killed that idea for me. So my question is, was it REALLY that bad? I mean bad enough that I shouldn't even pay 10 for it from Best Buy as a fan of the original? As in give you cancer bad?
I think that was because there was a horrible bug that impeded your progress in some way on launch copies of Card Fighters Clash, but the internets tell me that the bug has been fixed on newer copies. So it might be worth a shot for $10ish.

Both Touch Detective games and Ontamarama are $10 at most Game Stops, but I haven't played them yet.
I could really use feedback on Ontamarama in particular, since it's a rhythm game of some kind.

Oh, isn't Starfox Command super cheap now? What about EBA?

The first batch that was published contained some kind of gamebreaking bug preventing you from collecting all the cards.
Now, I haven't bothered with this game, but what I remember fans of the first saying about it was that this new version takes out some key strategic element of the first game, does away with that, and then adds some element that makes a lot of the card battles heavily based on chance/luck. It had something to do with number of cards played at once, and also with some limiting factor relating to 'force icons,' and it somehow makes card special abilities almost inconsequential.
Apparently there's no animation here, so every battle seems the same.. every CPU opponent is a pushover... the tiny size of the cards on screen are sometimes hard to control...
I don't think I ever really heard anything positive about the game....

Oh yeah, SF Command is $13 used at EBstop. I personally enjoyed the game okay, as a starfox fan, but I don't think it's all too supergreat. Decent at best really. The greatest aspect of it is the multiplayer, both online and off.. I wonder if anyone still plays it online? Anyway, the game is okay fun I guess, and I enjoyed the controls, but I wish it were more polished and had longer, less 'samey' feeling battles each time. I dunno.
The only thing positive I can say about SvC is that there's characters from everything in it.
I had a launch copy, returned it when I heard about the glitch, and never looked back. It's nothing special.
God, the old one on the NGPC had some immensely obscure characters in it, too. I know they took out the more role playing, wander around the town elements of the original, and just lock you in some tower. Also know that they upped the character count on the board to 8 which I guess stretches out battles too. The original had small cards though, and no animation, and it was still one of the most addictive card games I've ever played, so I still kinda held out hope. Oh well
I know it probably goes over the price limit of the thread, but I have to hijack it for a second and ask, how is Populous??? Spent so much time on the original on my old Atari 1200 computer. I didn't even realize it (or Rhapsody) were out til minutes ago, which really really drives my desire for this system even more.

Kirby Superstar Ultra and Chrono Trigger just came out. Though its at the 30 (35?) dollar mark.
Custom Robo is a fun game that you can find for really freakin cheap nowadays.
The Final Fantasy Remakes are alright as well. Again, still think they're at the 35 dollar mark.
If you liked the Megaman Zero games, I've heard good things about Megaman ZX, never played it myself.

Edit: Doesn't this always happen to Tetris games? I recall a similar situation with Tetrisphere 64.
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
Probably. The Tetris Holding Company is fickle as hell.
In fact I think it's issues with the Tetris Holding Company that is holding Nintendo back from making more production runs of Tetris DS.
