Hello Help / Advice, please, I need your assistance!
I'm trying to get my Mustek 600 USB scanner to work on a plain-jane Windows XP computer. Now, I found some (unsigned) drivers for it, they seemed to install just fine, and when I open Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras she's right there, I can even run a diagnostic and she makes little buzzing noises and generally sounds fine. The diagnostic says there's nothing wrong, too.
However, I can't scan anything.
I launch the Scanner and Camera Wizard via WIAACMGR.EXE and it says the computer cannot detect a scanner. I can't import a picture either, through MS Paint or my freshly downloaded Vuescan software.
What should my next step be?
TL ; DR Scanner diagnostic says I'm good, still can't recognize through software or wizard.

mind, I'm not sure if it works becasue his isn't the same model but worth a shot
Do the following
1. start regedit
2. about HKLM/software/Microsoft/Windows NT/current version
change the key "product name"
from Microsoft Windows XP
into Microsoft Windows 2000
3. install the Mustek driver for Windows 2000
4. undo the changes in the registry.
DONT!!! reboot untill you have changed the product key back to windows 2000.
It works fine i have the 1200 CU on XP Pro.
The guys from Mustec tech support sent it to me. Top Men All.
I uninstalled the drivers I had installed, regedit'd the key, reinstalled the driver, and things were looking up. The system recognized the device over USB. but when I try to use it, the Scanner and Camera Wizard and VueScan still say they can't detect a scanner. (I tried scanning with it both before and after I re-edited the registry key + rebooted)
Hmm.
If you have a piece of software that refuses to install because it says that you are not running Windows 2000 (such as the Win2K drivers for a Mustek scanner!!) you can simply edit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/ProductName
to say Microsoft Windows 2000 instead of XP and it will install. You may also have to edit the version number or build number, depending on how hard the program tries to verify that you are installing on the correct OS. I had to do this for my Mustek 600 CP scanner (compatibility mode didn't help!!!) and it worked great, so I now have my scanner working with XP (and a tech at Mustek can now eat his words). BTW, don't forget to restore any changes you make after you get your software installed.
tldr; edit the version number
