That's hardly a ringing endorsement from a game that was criticised for having too much realism.

I just like the phrase 'ringing endorsement'. Niko's story was actually quite good, though I prefer TLaD more. Haters gonna hate, right? Well, it was mostly good. The middle bit and the involvement with the McCrearys was a drag. The ending(s) weren't received as well as they'd hoped, either.
But I liked the idea of a more serious GTA game. I think they needed to find a better balance and the DLC showed steps in that direction. I'm optimistic about V.
yeah i got the sense they weren't fully ready to commit and get rid of naming everything "69", but with red dead and LA noire being quite straigh-faced i think they have taken that idea on board
a fully serious GTA with more operative freedom would be my ideal

I really want to be a crime boss. I don't know if I have a fetish for controlling things, but I want to own the next GTA city.
Things I think they could stand to loose for the next GTA or maybe take them away for one level.
Manually driving All the way from one island to another for a mission, a little "let me drive" and montage will spice things up.
Having insane amounts of ammo. Kind of takes away the fun.
Disposable nature of cars.
As far as everyone who wants the old days of GTA, might I recommend the Bob side story? You can download Bob's tale on day one. When you fire up bob's tale, you are playing a very old school GTA game, no plot, no girlfriends, just run and gun and blow it to hell. You can even trigger an old school overhead view.
One of the last parcel missions, I reached the drop off point and when the camera jumped to show the deal, I saw a pigeon, right in front of the camera and thought "WITNESS!" BLAM BLAM BLAM!
Anyone know what setting you have to edit to remove friction on cars? :winky:
in the handling dat.
DragMulti I believe is the wind drag force. set it to like -12. enjoy!
TractionBias is the other one people were mucking with (like the GTA carmageddon videos on youtube.) but I find the reverse drag force to be much much muuuuuch more entertaining.
also, setting one type of car (or bike) @ like 200,000 mass and parking it in a busy intersection is good times, watching dozens of cars hit your tank taxi at 200+ mph never gets old.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I like the direction they were trying to take the series in with IV, but I don't think they managed to execute it too well. However, with the episodes and RDR, they've shown that they're getting a better grip on what kind of stuff works and what doesn't with the kind of story they want to tell. All signs point to their next game being better than the last, which means that GTA V really should be pretty awesome

pitfall they tend to be falling into recently though is letting their film obsession put their well-made plots into very strict, very scripted games. to be fair this has been a problem all along (why can't i just park a car in front of the guy's escape route now i know he's running?/how the hell did i "lose" track of the guy, he's on a highway with no exits, can't i beat him to the pass?) but i noticed a bit of this in red dead as well. opening the game out for more player creativity would be very much appreciated.
also if they are trying to get more realistic, they could take a leaf out of la noire's book and have less missions about bloody fucking massacre. completely cleaning a warehouse dry of an army of criminal scum with 11 different weapons kinda dulls a person to a gritty tale of crime where one shot can change things drastically.

Yes and yes. I would love to play a crime game where there's real tension about whether the guns are about to come out, and if they do there are real consequences. I want to be all like "oh damn, is he about to pull a gun? Is the still a way to stop this going south?" rather than "shootin' some dudes... Get some health... Shootin' more dudes..."
Is there an exact timeline of events floating around anywhere for IV and the two addons?
Say for instance I wanted to replay all three, switching back and forth in story order for some insane reason.

This sucks. My enthusiasm for this game has ground to a halt right about where I last did, the Four Leaf Clover mission. I got a few missions past it last time I tried to play through the game, but it's the same point where I just started deciding I don't give a shit anymore. I want to want to finish this
IV gets mired in a mid-game that loses focus pretty easily. Sadly, the rest of the game really doesn't make up for it. Alderney is simply poorly designed and the missions that happen when it opens up are strung along to force a conclusion. Plus, it falls down by presenting a terribly realised 'Sofie's Choice' kind of scenario.
I'm probably one of the few who thinks the final series of missions after the choice are actually pretty good. But it's really a bit of 'too little, too late'.
I say if they had cut back on maybe 20 or so missions in the middle, the pacing would've been a bit better.
It's not a detailed write-up of exactly what happens, but it's a timeline that shows where the missions fit in with one another. Obviously, spoilers abound.

This is why I like the episodes so much. The missions don't get repetitive, the story doesn't lose focus, the characters don't start grating, etc

I'll probably leave my savegame where it is, and just come back later. I don't know why I deleted my save game at this spot before, maybe it was for trophies, but I'm not deleting this one. When I feel like getting back to it, I'll give it another go. But for now, it's on the back burner again.
Guess I just got irritated that every time someone said they could help me find whoever it was I was looking for, their 'help' was sending me to some other douchebag that could help me, who sent me to some other fucking douchebag.
I have the same feeling too, while I like the story of GTA IV, I just dislike playing out the missions. Doesn't help either that the DLC's missions seem to play out better. I feel sorry for my mate, though, as he is stuck on the very last mission, known far and wide for its lack of checkpoints.
And yes, the Sophie's Choice is just horribly done.
Kate has no redeeming qualities other than being the token innocent. If she really wanted out of the family's way of life, shouldn't she have, you know, moved out and started her own life?
All I let myself see in that spoiler was the first word and sadly, it was already spoiled thanks to some tv show showing a random clip.

Actually, I find that the way they set up GTAIV leds itself poorly to long continuous play and better to short bursts of playtime. Of course, that still doesn't excuse the lack of checkpoints.
i am so dead set on the next gta being first person. it brings it to life in a whole new way. too bad rockstar are obsessed with turning their games into interactive films right now
Does that mod let you play the game in the first person...
Yup.
That's awesome. But it's only a few MB, and that video looks like it added entirely new textures, too. Broswing around, there are a ridiculous amount of graphical mods and I wouldn't even know where to begin, let alone what works together.
I'll probably wait until the 1.2.5 version is released, though, but I'd love a guide on what else to get.

They actually had to scale this back a bit due to overheating of tester's GPU's.
Does that mod let you play the game in the first person in addition to making it look amazing? It totally should.
