The radio stations were, for the most part, decent enough. But I'm pretty sure they were on loops like 3 and VC were. After the more dynamic stations in SA it was a bit disappointing.
Everything else in this post was pretty spot on (Radio 2.0 is actually Integrity 2.0, but I was very disappointed in Lazlow as well), but as a matter of fact, at least many-if not most or all- radio stations were not on a loop. Weazel News and Weather will jump in at on various stations at random times and give an accurate forecast on what you'll see in the next 24 'hours' or so, and I've heard songs just drop in or get intro'd by the host.
Just thought I'd clear that up, as I've been playing IV a lot recently since this thread re-emerged.
I'm just glad most of the missions are a lot easier than the previous games. I always hit a mission I just had no interest in trying for the thirteenth time and moved on to a different game after doing a bit of screwing around.
Obviously you haven't hit any of the motorcycle chase missions yet.
Missions where you're chasing motorcycles or being chased on them?

Heh, I remember the first one of those I did.
The one where you have to kill the Lost biker guy, since Faustin doesn't like him or something. I chased him for quite a bit, wondering when he'd stop before I remembered "Hey, this isn't San Andreas. I can just shoot him right now."

Yeah... I knew Radio 2.0 was wrong, but he just kept saying it over and over again...
And if I think about it, the radio playlists were a little dynamic. I just never got that impression by listening to them (I swear LCHC was one long loop...) and I don't remember the weather forecasts happening very much.
I guess what I was trying to get at was that there just wasn't much variety within each station. There was a buch to choose from, but once you landed on a station, it was the same bunch of songs and DJ banter like they were Top 40 stations living in fear of the next book... I think they could've cut out a few stations to widen the playlists a bit more.
I mean, look at this list. I probably stuck to Liberty City Rock and Radio Broker simply because they had so much comparatively. The Beat and The Vibe being next on my list of most listened to stations.
The worst thing about the chase missions was not knowing if you could kill the quarry or not. Sometimes, I'd follow the guy around for a couple of minutes waiting for a cutscene to initiate before realizing that I did, indeed, have the ability to shoot and kill.
Also, GTA IV's humour was cringe-inducingly immature.

Okay, a cab ran me over and took away a lot of my health, which pissed me off. So I shot the driver through the windshield. I guess his foot fell on the accelerator or something 'cause the car suddenly took off. The taxi tore down the sidewalk, mowing down everyone in its way with the driver slumped dead over the steering wheel.
Finally, my own unique experience in Liberty City.

I hate when that doesn't work out so right. Like, they accelerate.....just....y'know, right over you. I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me. I hate getting killed by dead people.
And an experience I would like to share that made me laugh entirely too much. I was driving around, having a little blast and whatnot until I caused a wee bit of a traffic jam. Knocking a car horizontal in front of two lanes with the driver being dead kinda makes that happen. So I get around to the other side, where the jam is, because I'm trying to turn around to head back the way I came. Along the way, I ran into some poor woman who thunked over my hood. Oops. Said woman is lying between the two lanes of traffic there. I finally get turned around and drive towards the cars in front of me and slam on the brakes because that woman is getting up to try and hobble off. I'm of a mind that anything started should be finished, so I want to back up and take her down. My brakes don't stop me soon enough and I tap into the taxi in front. Who proceeds to throw open his door to get out angrily. Which, in doing so, slams the door right against the side of the head of the woman, knocking her down dead. (Again)

Laughs were had.
Oh, he drove over me, all right. But after that, he kept on going and running over people on the sidewalk. I was sprinting behind the car, collecting the money all those recently deceased people had been kind enough to leave for me.
Keep in mind that you can also shoot cops through the windshield. I often do that when I'm being chased, it makes them veer off course, usually into the opposite lane, causing a convenient traffic jam to help you get away.
My favorite moment in this was one time where I was running from the cops, 5 stars, coming full speed in a Comet down a straightaway downtown. I noticed the street was coming to a T intersection and I would have to turn, but it was too late to slow down and turn normally, so I hit the e-brake and slide through the intersection onto the sidewalk.

Went ahead and bought the game (pc version) despite my misgivings about the Rockstar Social Club program, the Microsoft Live thingy and whatever other crap I would have to go to in order to play the game. And it did take quite a while. Anyway...
I wasn't getting the best performance from the game at all. Using the 8.11 Catalyst driver, it was playable with the following settings - high textures, very high rendering, 30 view distance, 30 detail distance, no shadow density. No matter what I changed, I typically got around the 20fps mark. Like every other Radeon owner, I was hoping for a goodly improvement when the the 8.12 driver was released. I installed it, and the game ran with a noticeable improvement, if not a great one. A couple of fps, I should think. Everything seemed fine, but the game does seem to drag a bit more when turning the camera while driving, for example. However, things are definitely not fine. This is what I saw when I drove over to Manny's for the next mission -
Wonderful. Crap performance but correct textures in 8.11, somewhat better performance but missing textures in 8.12. Sigh. Guess I'll have to wait for the patch. Shouldn't have any problem running it with the following specs, but I am -
Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13GHz
2GB PC6400
Radeon HD4870 1GB

So... I have a Core2Duo and a 4850, will this game look good or no?
It's apparently entirely CPU bound so it depends entirely on what core2 you have. 3+ghz ok, less than that... not so great, around 2ghz and it'll run like ass.
Yeah, they have a little gas canister on the side that you can shoot, too. Just like those forklifts.
I never noticed this.

It is. I finally got around to upgrading my system. I went from 29-30fps on the default settings with an e6600 to 52-55fps on a q9550. It is completely playable now, even with shadows enabled.
Really odd that they went to such lengths to produce a realistic set of teeth that will never be seen in the game! All they had to do was create a small portion of them, those that will be seen when a character opens their mouth when talking. Those teeth are scarily realistic.

So I've got an e6300 overclocked to 3Ghz, and I'm thinking of upgrading to a 4870. Would this be enough to run the game at 1440X900?
I run it on my E6600 at 2.4ghz at medium settings (no shadows they look terrible anyway) at around 30 fps. It dips below quite often, but it's still playable.
There is some weird textures not loading after playing for awhile, but I think that has to do with a memory leak.
I guess I should probably get a new fan and try overclocking my CPU. I'm sure I could get some more fps that way, and I've always wondered what my chip could do if I overclocked it.

Yes. But the game requires you to do some tweaking to get the best performance. Check my post at the top of page 9.

The E6600 is a very good overclocker. It can probably hit 3GHz with a stock fan, as long as your case has decent cooling.
It runs a little hot about 40-45c surfing the web and closer to 50-55 during games. I think I need to crack it open and blow out the dust again.
It's always run a bit warm though, I have a big Antec case so I'm not sure why, but I think it's probably because of my giant 8800GTS that thing takes up a lot of space and puts out plenty of heat right towards the processor.

FUCKING PATCH PLOX. I swear this is the last Rockstar game I EVER buy. I have still yet to get a reasonable workaround to fix the texture/shadow issues.
I'm glad it's got a taste for the complexity of character without sacrificing its defining satirical streak.
I found the satire and drama to be clashing, rather than complementary. When the game ends, the camera sort of pans over the city and you see the Statue of Happiness. It's supposed to be a dramatic ending, but when I saw the coffee cup in her hand, I burst out laughing since I'd never noticed it before.
I think they should have committed more. One way or the other. The story had most of the drama and the environment it was placed in had most of the satire. I enjoyed it overall, but it didn't mesh well.
That and other decisions they made have me leaning in the direction that GTAIV is an overall step back from what they had done previously. Maybe the DLC will show where they might be headed now that they've re-created the 'base' world and are now familiar with the environment.
I thought it was just me that thought this at first. I guess one of the reasons why I liked Saints Row 2 more than GTA is not that it's satire was better, nor that its story was better, but rather it set a consistant tone rather than GTA's strange mix-mash of serousness and parody. It was hard for me to truely immerse myself with the great storyline of GTA's when the radio commercials and pedestrians (If I hear them shout "cheezy vagina" one more time...) was quite over the top in parody.
See, I'm a big fan of Saints Row, but I still liked GTA4 over SR2. I played GTA3 and Vice City, but not San Andreas, so I can't say whether GTA4 was a step back from San Andreas, but it was definitely better than GTA3 and Vice City, neither of which I could ever be bothered to complete. This was the first one that held my interest all the way to the end of the storyline. I was actually disappointed that it had to end because I wanted more. I thought they did a pretty good job with the storyline, much like the original Saints Row, whereas Saints Row 2 had a crap storyline and crap characters and was just too ridiculous and gimmicky for its own good. GTA4 on the other hand had a pretty good storyline by video game standards and while there was some dissonance between the tone of the story and the game world itself, it was still immersive for me. Everything was an exaggerated stereotype, including most of the characters and many of the plot elements. So while the story was for the most part very serious, it was also over the top to the same degree as the less serious elements of the game.
I have a Dual Core 2.5Ghz, and a 4850. Game benchmarks 25fps. I overclocked to 3ghz, and got another 8fps, but it wasnt stable so Im back at default now. The new catlayst drivers didnt make any noticable difference. The game looks good on 1680 x 1050, just fps slows down when the cops show up. Im hoping a patch will speed things up. I think Ill just wait for the patch, Id rather play the whole story through at reasonable spec and get the most out of it. Until then Im perfectly happy launching motorcyclists into orbit with a head on collision on the freeway Man you can really get some air
After playing this for a while, I'm a bit disappointed. San Andreas just had so much more to do. All the vehicle schools, planes, buying property, etc. Storyline is better in this, though, and Niko is the best protagonist so far.
I feel like they cut out a lot of the fat, I hated having to work out to make my guy stronger, or running to make him have more endurance... these are things that I do enough in real life, that I don’t' need to be wasting time in a video game doing.
Also, am I remembering correctly... past versions of GTA had cops that would throw out spike strips? For some reason I remember this in past GTA games... and it's not anywhere to be found in GTA4... and THANK GOD FOR THAT! I hate spike strips.

I hates the spikes too but i think it added something to the realism.
Also i miss buying properties, maybe someone will mod it in.
The cheats for this game are underwhelming. Where's my no police cheat? On that note the fact that savegames aren't interchangable with other's is really lame as well.
I do miss owning property. There are plenty of places you could own in Liberty City.
But I'm glad they got rid of all the grinding bullshit from SA. Of course they replaced it will hanging out with friends which gets irritating after awhile since there are only so many things to do.
It would be nice if at a certain point people were just cool with you and didn't need as much attention. I agreed to hang out then canceled on Roman several times and he just randomly gave me a thumbs down yesterday.

Really odd that they went to such lengths to produce a realistic set of teeth that will never be seen in the game! All they had to do was create a small portion of them, those that will be seen when a character opens their mouth when talking. Those teeth are scarily realistic.

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB
Not enough?
So I've got an e6300 overclocked to 3Ghz, and I'm thinking of upgrading to a 4870. Would this be enough to run the game at 1440X900?
There is some weird textures not loading after playing for awhile, but I think that has to do with a memory leak.
I guess I should probably get a new fan and try overclocking my CPU. I'm sure I could get some more fps that way, and I've always wondered what my chip could do if I overclocked it.
Yes. But the game requires you to do some tweaking to get the best performance. Check my post at the top of page 9.
The E6600 is a very good overclocker. It can probably hit 3GHz with a stock fan, as long as your case has decent cooling.
It's always run a bit warm though, I have a big Antec case so I'm not sure why, but I think it's probably because of my giant 8800GTS that thing takes up a lot of space and puts out plenty of heat right towards the processor.
I know they've patched the console version and left it broken so I guess it's working as intended?
It has never worked for me. The only useful dating reward is Kiki's "Clear Wanted".
