Replacement mp3 player

Alright folks!

My Gigabeat F40 that I've had for years seems to have had enough. It's been dropped too many times, and it's starting to wear out. Battery life is still fine, but the casing is extremely loose and the screen is brighter than it was a few days ago. If my screen goes that's it - this player wasn't very popular and has been discontinued for a while, so I'll have to just upgrade.

There are only really three things that are imperative in the new player.

1. There must not be any music management software required.
I run Rockbox on my Gigabeat. It works exactly like a portable hard drive - I drop files on it, unplug it, and play them. It's a completely DRM-less and tremendously easy to back up. Any player you recommend must either have a system like this or I should be able to install Rockbox on it.

2. 40GB or more.
That's what I have right now, I don't particularly want to downgrade. I am currently using 33GB of 40.

3. Flat.
I don't want any fiddly joysticks sticking out or anything. I should be able to slide it into my pocket and that's it.

The rest are just standard requirements - good battery life, etc. At the moment, I'm leaning towards a 40GB or above iPod (Video? Photo?), as that seems to fall slap dab in the middle of everything I want, but if there's another player out there that fits this criteria I'd love to see it. I'm not averse to second-hand anything, either - even if they don't make it any more, I'll probably be able to find one easier than a new Gigabeat, so have at it.

iPods require some sort of software, unless you replace the firmware (although from what I've heard, it can't be done on the newer iPods yet).

I've heard good things about Sandisk's players.

Sorry, I wasn't clear - Rockbox is a replacement firmware. If I were to get an iPod the first thing I would do would be to replace the default firmware with Rockbox, and I would get an older one in order for it to be compatible.

These are the currently supported players. However, if there's a player not on that list that has a filetree-based system then I'm still interested.

EDIT: Yow, 5th-gen iPods are still far too expensive. Fuck that, then. Would love any other suggestions, though, or pointers to anywhere that will service my Gigabeat. I might get a cheap F10 and replace the screen and casing, in the end.

check out the archos line of digital media players.

As far as I can tell they seem to be the only 40gb or greater PMPs that may not require software.

I only own a Zune, which requires the Zune software, but it's really not all that bad.
