All I want for Christmas is a Blu-ray player

So this is the last bastion of home electronics for me. I have a great audio/visual setup at home. The only thing I'm missing is the best possible picture for movies. I've been thinking about a Blu-ray player for awhile, but the questionable longevity of the media has held me back. With prices now lower, and Boxing Day sales on the way, I figure what the hell, I'm in.

So what do we need to look for when it comes to buying a Blu-ray player? Are all the brands similar? What features should I look for? Should I scrap the whole idea and embrace Digital Delivery?

You need a PS3. In my opinion still the best player, although prices have come down alot for standalones.

Standalones are a lot cheaper now, I recently got a Sony one, the s330 or something. It has a lot faster loading time than any other BR player i've seen in use, and it upscales DVDs rather well. You might want to try the tech subforum though.

Panasonic has a decent one out for 200$ or so, we bought it for my Mom's setup and the quality is great. It also has a network jack for firmware upgrades and such, altough we haven't hooked that up for her.

I'd rather spend less than 300 bucks, and if I had a PS3, I'd be tempted to buy games and I already can't keep up with my Wii60 lifestyle.

Is the Blu-ray firmware still seeing updates? What is included in these? Why was there never any DVD firmware updates? Do all players have ethernet connections?

Just check if it has an ethernet port or whatever and you'll be fine for updates. It isn't just firmware either, some BR discs get additional content releases online. My player came with a 1GB flash card that's used to store temporary data for films that have additional downloadable content and the like.
