Metal Slug 3 techinical problem

I have a problem with Metal Slug 3 on the xbox 360. I can never finish a game; it always freezes! At random points (usually in the second level) it will just freeze. The music keeps playing, and I can bring up the menu by pressing start, but nothing I do gets things moving again.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried google and (god help me) the GameFAQs boards, but I haven't found any mention of this. I've tried deleting the save file, the game, and both & redownloaded, but it still happens.
I love this game but it's not playable like this.
