Why the fuck do Kirk, Spock, and McCoy always beam down when there are 428 red shirts that could be doing it?

I have never understood why they beam the captain right down into unknown territory

    cuz the Captain is the Captain and he chooses whoever he wants to go on away-missions.


    You don't see a lot of Picard on the surface of planets because he was more of a by-the-books kind of guy and the official "rules" in Starfleet say the Captain is too important to risk on away missions.

    a lot of the time its a diplomatic mission and for some reason on a ship that can carry several thousand people (galaxy class anyways), they can't fit a permanent ambassador on there so the Captain needs to pick up the slack.

    True but that was the exception for him, he didnt do a lot of 'Kirking' either unless Vash showed up. For the most part during TNG it was all 'Rikering'.
