Can you play online in US with Japanese PS3 games?

I heard that PS3 has no region coding, and allows us to play either JP or US games.

But... can you play online in the US with Japanese PS3 games? For example, if I buy a Japanese version of Call of Duty, can I still play it online in US? I guess my question is if the game determines which server I connect to.

I'm planning on buying White Knight Chronicles, which is only available in Japan and has an online play feature. Since the game is not available in the states, will I be connecting to a japanese server? or will I not be able to play it since it's not available in the States?

as you can tell, I'm completely confused. any reply is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can, but how it works depends on how the game is set up. For a game like Resistance, with dedicated servers, you play on your regional server as per the disc, so if you buy a Japanese disc you'll play on Japanese servers from the US - read: tons of lag - but for other games it's not really a problem.

Totally depends on the netcode and how the servers are set up. I've been playing Initial D on my PS3 since release, and I've never run into much lag; those servers are all in Japan as well, if I'm not mistaken.

White Knight Chronicles IS coming to the States, so you can either wait for the American release or you can buy the Japanese version.

oh i see, i didn't know that. So, depends on the game and which server they are connected to. Thanx for the reply!

Another dumb question... how do I know if the game has dedicated regional server or not? Is it usually written on the package?

I see. do you know any games that has a lag problem? I think I'll just wait for the White Knight Chronicles to come out in the U.S. :) thanx for the reply!

Honestly the only imported game that I play online is Initial D, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if I know of others :(. I have heard stories of some bad lag, but I guess I just lucked out with a game that has some good servers and netcode.

I'll be waiting for the US version as well, since I'd like to play co-op with friends (don't want to take my chances with international copies) and I don't feel like brushing up on my kanji. It's supposed to come out around spring/summer next year though, ugh. Here's to the long wait!
