The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
This was back in the late 90's or early 00's. It was an MMO that featured birth and death and all sorts of crazy shit. Anyway it turned out it was just some kid claiming to be working on an MMO and making 3d stills of stuff. God I can't remember anything else but I have been hammering my brain about it.
What a scam. There were a ton of people that played Asheron's Call that were looking forward to it.
A few more details I recall: The game's feature list was essentially an overly imaginative MMORPG fan's wetdream wishlist and included such gems as terrain transformation, totally open PVP, permanent death, city building, strictly enforced roleplaying, and some bizarre attempts to inject realism such as a system where mobs reproduce. This was all the way back in 2000 when the mainstream MMORPG market pretty much only consisted of Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, and Everquest. People who were pining for more totally ate this shit up hook, line and sinker. Of course a lot of people were incredibly skeptical (to put it kindly) for a long time and eventually the whole thing was more or less debunked when it came out that the sole person behind the company and the project was a teenager. If I recall he didn't really ever fess up, rather suddenly the website changed to support an entirely different game with no mention of Dawn and the whole thing drifted into obscurity.
I just stumbled across this old preview from 2001. I'm sure there's more info out there including more about the hoax aspects of it but I've already wasted enough energy on this reply. ;-) http://www.rpgplanet.com/features/firstlooks/dawn/
Holy shit, the site is still around and he even still has a Dawn site. Amazing! Apparently this is still coming out despite missing their 2001 open beta deadline by just a little.
