So, I just got an Xbox today and I in light of Dead Rising making an awful noise in the drive, I would like to do some HD installs. But I don't have any way to connect my box to the net (no crossover cables and no wifi adapter), so I followed this guide until I got to the power cycle bit.. I unplugged the cable, waited for five minutes and then booted with the DVD-R in the drive, right. That's what they mean by power cycle, right? Well, the update is not initiated and I have burn the folder, the contents of the folder and the zip file to the root of the disc, so.. am I missing something here?

Did you unzip the files before burning them to the disc?

As I mentioned on the disc is both the zip file, the unzipped folder and the files in the folder. I think I took every precaution for it to find the files.

You may have done to much. Just burn the unzipped files to the root of the disc. Don't copy the folder as well.

Also, for internet sharing, you don't need crossover cables. You don't need them for system link either. I never, ever understood crossover cables, as any device I've ever used in a way that might need them, a regular cat5 cable worked.

Going from one computer directly to another without a router in between requires a crossover cable.

On topic: isn't the NXE included on new game discs as a forced update? And if not, why not?

Usually you would need a crossover cable if you go from comp to comp, but most new devices (xbox360 included) can actually take a regular cable. Plugging your 360 into a computer may be the easiest way to get the NXE (provided that you can still get internet access on your computer while having the xbox connected).

This was true once upon a time. These days though, everything has auto-detecting ports on them, meaning crossover cables are unnecesary.

I tried it with an ethernet cable I had lying around and it just doesn't fly with Vista.

Also no dice on the update, tried burning 2 dvds, which were all I had and also through USB. Neither seem to do anything, however the last disc I burned read as a mixed media DVD, where they others just read "unreadable media" or something. This was the one with just the folder. Still no updating, though.

EDIT: Also I found two different updates through the MS site? One labeled Fall update contained a bunch of files and another, supposedly the newest with only one file.

I think the earlier poster suggested you take the files out of the folder and have just the files by themselves on the disc. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you said.

Even after you enabled Internet Connection Sharing? You have to share your internet between the two NICs on your comp in order for this to work. I don't have Vista so I can't really give you instructions, but it should be pretty easy (at least it is in XP, and I can't imagine Microsoft making it more complicated. Since the DVD route isn't working out so well for you so far, maybe try this path?

edit: Wow, it seems really simple. Google gave me this

I followed a guide to doing it with no luck, because it was, basically, a no-brainer. No such luck. Guide-guy mentioned that it would only work on a crossover cable, so I'm putting it down to that.

Elementalor > Would that work, because I seriously considered that.

EDIT: I also just remembered getting 2000 MS points. Man, I seriously hope I can get all of this working.

I would assume so? I don't remember 360 updates needing to select any options and I think they default to having "Yes, install now" highlighted by default.

I'm not sure if not having the video output connected to something would give an error, though.

As long as the cable is plugged into the console, he should be fine. It does not need to be plugged into a TV.

Weird. The funny thing is, the guide I found specifically tells you to NOT use a crossover cable, which obviously conflicts with your guide. I can definitely say that using a regular cable works for me at least, but I don't understand why it's not working for you.

If you're going to plug in and press A a few times, see if you can find a video, maybe on youtube, of the upgrade process. That might give you a hint as to when and how many times you should press A.

Yeah, exactly. I still have no freaking idea why I can't do the offline update.

EDIT: Alright, I checked other people detailing the USB installation and it clearly goes format to FAT-32, unplug powercable - wait (I have waited for ten minutes every time, easily), boot with the USB stick in the box with a folder named $SystemUpdate containing the update files and it should autoupdate. Have anyone done this?

What do you mean by "mark both in connections and bridge?" Actually, I don't think there should be any bridging at all. Just one checkmark in ICS for the NIC that gets the internet, and leave everything else at default.

Checking my xbox now, I did manually set an IP address. I don't think that really required, but I did it anyway (I had some trouble getting the connection to work initially). XP set my second NIC (the one that wired to my xbox) with an IP of 192.168.0.1, so I set my xbox to 192.168.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and gateway to my PC's IP (192.168.0.1).

As per the guide I followed, I highlighted both network connections (the ethernet and the wifi) in "manage my connections" (in Vista, mind you) and clicked "bridge connections". This created a third connection named bridge and every looked like it should, but it fails at aquiring an IP adress. Guidemaker mentioned in his guide that this was probably caused by a regular ethernet cable vs a crossover cable.

AZChristopher > Did that, found guide. No dice.
