Linksys WRT54G, 2 Xbox 360s & Wi-Fi Disconnects
I'm running a WI-FI network at home with a Linksys WRT54G (version 8.0), to which I have connected:
- Xbox 360 (Mine)
- Xbox 360 (Boyfriend's)
- Laptop
- Desktop (Wired)
- Apple iPhone
- Sony PSP
Everything works perfectly, but for whatever reason if my Xbox 360 is on and connected to Xbox Live, and he signs on with his, I get booted off. It also works the other way around (he's on, I sign on, he gets booted). It usually takes a restart of the router before we can both be signed on at the exact same time.
We just moved in together a year ago, and it's always done this. Nothing else on the network gets disconnected in a similar manner, it's always a conflict between our Xbox 360s. I recently even disabled DHCP on the router, assigned everything static IP addresses (thinking maybe the router was having IP address conflicts), and still no luck. It's no big deal really, but it would be nice to know what's causing this.
Both Xbox 360s are using the Microsoft Wireless Network Adapter, if that matters.
Im not an expert with this kind of thing, but i remember my friend having the same problem with him and his brother trying to both connect to xbox live on seperate xbox's as well. Im assuming it has to do something with the port or something that the xbox might use which is the same for all xbox's??? Again, im no expert but i dont think its possible to do that on the same internet connection, let alone same router.
In My Xbox > System Settings > Network Settings > Configure Network there's a line that says Network Type. If both machines are on the same channel then you might get issues.
Microsoft support are free and will probably be able to help you more, though.

Thanks, but I know that's not the case. We connect both Xboxes to Live, at the same time, all the time. I am just trying to find out why the first person to sign on gets kicked off when the second person signs on. Like I said above a reboot of the router solves the problem, and we can both sign on at the same time thereafter.
willeth,
Thanks for your input too, but I think you're referencing the wireless channel. If so, that had to be the same, and is automatically set by the Wi-Fi connection you connect to; you can't change it. Since we're both connecting to our Wi-Fi, the channel will always be the same. Remember that all my other devices connected to the Wi-Fi utilize the same channel, and they never get disconnected like the Xboxes do.
I don't have this problem myself but about five people on my XBL friends list do, and I would also be really interested in helping them solve it. It happens as you describe -- one person signs on, the other gets disconnected. But, not every time.
Unfortunately I dont have the answer, but I do have a 360 networking issue, so I figured I'd ask here. I'm not a networking expert, so bear with me. I Have a netgear CG814GCMR box I'm hooked through and whenever I play Call of Duty 5 (I am not sure if any other games do this, dont have one to test. That said Netflix streams fine and does not cause this issue.) I am disconnected after a game or two.
I went in and gave the 360 a static IP, as well as set the DNS manually (use the same ones I find on my PC under ipconfig, let me know if that's wrong). After that I forwarded the ports suggested by a few friends and Portforward.com, 88 and 3074 I believe. I still get the same issue.
The last thing I tried was setting up the 360 as a DMZ, but I've only gotten one or two games in and am at work right now so I can't really test and see if that fixed it.
Anybody have any advice? The other thing I thought of was updating firmware, but I'll be damned if I can find it anywhere. Any help would be extremely appreciated as right now live is nearly unusable. Thanks guys.
Xboxs wouldn't have MAC address conflicts would they?
I would guess no seeing as it sometimes allows them both to connect, and also that Microsoft probably wouldn't be dumb enough to give them all the same MAC address. But I would at least check. You should be able to find this information from your router's display of what machines are connected.
Have you checked to see if both 360's are trying to connect to the router using the same IP? Might help checking in Network settings to make sure that both 360's are set to use dynamic IP's.
If for some reason you can not use dynamic IP's then you could set your both IP's to static but make sure they are both different and in the range of your router example: 192.168.1.XXX as most routers use 192.168 for their IP range.
I agree with Mithrandir. Try using one with an etehrnet cable and let us know if it works.

Whoops... guess I didn't set up a subscription to this thread.
I haven't tried going wired on one Xbox, that's certainly something I'm going to try now. I think I mentioned it aleady, but if not here it is again: I'm currently running a static IP configuration, so there is no conflict there, but this problem was also present back when I was running a dynamic IP address configuration.
And no, the Xboxes aren't having a MAC address conflict. They're different.
I'll post any progress I have once I switch one Xbox to wired.
I get the same thing, only the problem that affects me is if anyone signs onto LIVE in the living room, it will kick me out of WoW (always) and other online games (sometimes) or cause downloads to stutter briefly while the xbox logged in. I always blamed Microsoft for having a shitty system for logging into LIVE, but I have the same router so maybe that is the curplut after all.

Man I'm a fucking idiot, I've been getting on and off IP conflicts with my PC and Xbox for a while and didn't even bother to do that.

I had a similar problem with 2 xboxes and the same router. My solution consisted of wiring one of the 360s.
I have the same router as well, and my three sons with xbox live are being regularly disconnected from their games. It may well be that when one is connecting to Live the other's xbox is disconnected, but because they are in separate rooms they haven't noticed the reason for the disconnection. I'll have to check it out. I wonder if this problem is particular to this make of router.
I haven't gotten around to testing the suggestion of wiring one of the 360s to see if it still happens.
I'll wire it tonight and run some tests, but it's sounding like others already have. I wonder if this is an issue with the router or Xbox LIVE? I'd contact Microsoft support, but my opinion of support divisions for major corporations is well, non-existant. I'd probably buy and test an alternate router before I called Microsoft.
Sounds like the Xbox's have the same IP address. Once your boyfriend signs on, it's knocking yours off by using your IP. When yours hops back on the network it acquires a new IP.

I mentioned above somewhere that this happened both with static IP and dynamic IP configurations. IPs are dynamically assigned at this point, so there's absolutely no way the Xboxes are using the same IP.
I used to have this problem when I lived with my family. I sorted it out by manually assigning IP adresses to each 360. I see that you mention it happens with both static and dynamic IP, but have you tried going into the network settings on each individual xbox and assigning IP addresses yourself?

Yep, that's how it is now.
With DHCP disabled on the router you have to manually assign static IPs or you won't be able to connect.
All of our 360s are wired, but they still can only be on xbox live one at a time. I searched the net and discovered that this problem is not all that uncommon with the WRT54G router, but nobody out there seems to have a clear answer about how to solve it. My kids are complaining constantly, so I guess I'll buy a new router fairly quickly.....hmm, I wonder what type.

Wow, your problem seems to be even more of a pain than my own [and those whom have posted above]. Me for example, as mentioned above, I CAN get both Xboxes on Xbox LIVE. My situation is that whomever connects first gets booted when the second person connects, after which the first person can reconnect in a few moments, or both people can reconnect at the same time after power cycling the router.
EDIT: I'm curious, do you do dynamic or static IP addressing? Is DHCP enabled, or limited to a single IP address? Is there anything else on your network, for example PCs, and if so do they ever get disconnected in the same manner?
I give up... my WRT54G decided last night, wired or over Wi-Fi, to disconnect me multiple times within a short period of time. I guess it's time to get some suggestions for a new router.
EDIT: Good luck to those still having this problem. I'll post back after I get a different router, with my results.
I have the same router but only 1 xbox 360, here are a couple of suggestions. Open up more ports in the router for port fowarding, I'm guessing the second xbox grabs the same port the first one is using and bumps it. Second suggestion is 2 different ip address's for the xbox's.

Yep, firmware is current. UPnP has been enabled and disabled at various times, no difference.
Good luck, and please keep us posted. Maybe you'll be the one to finally break the cycle ...?
