here's the Song of Ice and Fire thread so all the whiners in the book thread don't have to deal with us muddling up their Faulkner and Austin and whatever
they're probably the best fantasy series since Lord of the Rings
four of the seven books have been released so far
everyone make sure to pray that Martin doesn't die before the final book is finished
also due to the constant shit-getting-real, please spoil everything remotely awesome by stating the title of the book you're spoiling and tagging it
so how about Dance with Dragons actually coming out this year?
This is the only fantasy series that I haven't just given up on. I read the first two ages ago and have started a cycle of rereading the whole series again in preparation for the release of each book since. I have never been so pumped about a book as a I am about Dance with Dragons.
has anyone here not figured out the Jon Snow secret
Who his mother is? I'm in the middle of Storm of Swords (no one spoil the big thing everyone has shitfits about 'cause I haven't gotten there yet) and have a unsubstantiated theory.
His mother was a Targaryen and he had to keep it quiet or else Robert would've killed Jon.

okay here's my theory, I'm told it's the prevailing theory among nerds who care a lot about this series
assuming this is true this is a HUGE spoiler:
he's the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Robert went to war because he thought Rhaegar had raped Lyanna but there's more to the backstory there. All of Ned's flashbacks where Lyanna said "Promise me, Ned" are him remembering his promise that he would claim Jon as his own bastard rather than revealing the truth--if Robert had known Jon's true nature he would have certainly killed him instantly.
I came up with this on my own but apparently a lot of other nerds think the same thing.
I think that this series gets a lot of praise because it's just so much better than a lot of the fantasy that most people read. I do not however think it is as good as it is painted to be, just that in comparison to many of its contemporaries it's pretty fantastic.
That's not to say I don't enjoy them, just that once I've read the books I won't read them again for a long time.
Also yeah I bet Martin's gonna die before he finishes the series
as long as Dance with Dragons comes out, and he gets like a plot outline with all the important shit in it so we can get a list of them when he dies.
Though I have my own theory: All the books are done. But he wants to build hype, or his publicist does. Also if they release after he dies then they might sell better and his loved ones could make more off them.

Yeah, I could definitely see that, but
I was always under the impression Robert went to war because of Aerys, not Rhaegar. I'd always suspected that Lyanna Stark was never raped as claimed, but never consider Jon might be her son.

I'm a poor college kid so I'm gonna go to a real bookstore soon and get the smaller paperback
GRRM is never going to last. He looks like he's five seconds from a heart attack in every picture I've ever seen.

i first read this series my sophomore year in high school and it wasn't even remotely challenging
asoiaf hardly constitutes difficult literature even though it totally rocks

I think it's easily the best pop fantasy series ever written. But it is what it is.
