So, I'm taking my first ever vacation sans parental units. So of course I'm choosing to go to Las Vegas.
Anyway, what are some cool things to in vegas outside of strip clubs and gambling?
Anything I should bring that most people don't think to bring?
Is it better to roll with a group of people or by one's self?
Anyone ever stay at The Lux? How was that?

You will have a very boring time at Vegas if you aren't 21. I did it, and it sucked.
I did that when I was there for the Nascar race last february.

The Bellagio fountains are awesome though, at least the first time you see them.
I went to the wax museum and that pretty fun.
Going with people is signficantly more fun than going alone.
Ah Vegas, the only place where I had a drink in my hand by 8 in the morning and didn't feel the slightest bit guilty.
If you're not 21 yet, go somewhere else.
On a related note, don't drink and drive, but you can walk down the street with a drink in your hand. So far as I know, public consumption is fine. Could be just on the strip, but you can definitely do it.
I've stayed there. (Do you mean Luxor? If not, disregard.)
It's...ok. Not great. Has kind of a late 80s/early 90s vibe. If it fits your budget, it's fine. Don't expect to be wowed though.
Personally, I go to gamble. And drink. Good times.
However - for fading the hangovers - I really, really enjoy getting a bit out of Vegas and taking in some natural scenery. Two favorite spots:
Red Rock Canyon
Valley of Fire
Both are within a couple of hours of Vegas. After a night of neon, alcohol and strippers they are a magnificient contrast - quiet, stark, beautiful, serene. Go get wrecked Saturday night, wake up late Sunday, drink a liter or two of water, and go hiking. Breathtaking desert scenery. Both have both driving and hiking trails. It probably affects me more since I'm a Midwestern guy but the desert is so beautiful.
I can has cheezburger, yes?
NOTHING
Seriously, dude, if you're not drinking or gambling, why come? Everything that you can do here thats not one of those two you can do elsewhere, and probably better too.
That said, if you like hiking, definitely check out Red Rock. Its incredibly awesome to explore. (Check out the Limestone Quarry if you go).
Um, theres Mount Charleston, which is cool to us Las Vegans just because its all foresty and we don't have that down in the valley. Other than that, its just...a mountain haha.
You might want to check out Lake Meade, haven't really been there though, so I can't reccomend anything.
The Circus Circus Adventuredome is pretty fun, I guess. Haven't been there in years.
The Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay is pretty awesome.
The Tournament of Champions (or Kings?) is really cool (at least I thought so). Its pretty cheap, and its good fun.
When are you coming out? Hopefully its soon, because we're enjoying our three weeks of nice weather right now. The other 3/4s is incredibly heat and the rest is slightly above freezing.
The Fremont Street Experience is supposed to be pretty cool as well.
Uh, you could check out the Blue Man Group. Maybe see Cirqus de Soliel (?). They have tons of shows here.
Thats all I got, dude. Have fun.
EDIT: Its DEFINITELY more fun to roll with other people, especially with the activities I suggested.
Check out my art! Buy some prints!
If you are 21, just going through all the hotels, drinking, and gambling will take up most of your time.
Also, walking up and down the strip with a drink in your hand.......at 8 in the morning, is hilariously awesome. Also note that that drink was my last drink before going to sleep. Was drinking it on my way back to my hotel.
Also, go see some shows. There are booths on a few places on the strip, I can't remember the exact name but it's like tix4today or something like that, where you go in the morning and get tickets for a show playing that night for half price. Most of the shows are really good.
I also highly recommend the Deuce. It's a 24 hour bus that runs up and down the strip, also up to downtown. $5 for a 24 hour pass is the best $5 you'll spend in the day. Walking is fine, but the strip is pretty fucking big, and if you want to travel any great distance the deuce is pretty much the best way.
Also, if you're under 21, for the love of god don't go.

Yes, Nevada IS the state where prostitution is legalized- in some counties. Clark County- which is Las Vegas and the surrounding environs- is NOT one of them.

For getting free drinks on the cheap, and cheaper machines/tables in general, I suggest Freemont street at least for a while.
The light show they have their is amazing.
walking to various casinos with this routine, and then playing poker pays for my trip financially and I get waaaasted for free
This. My GF kicks ass at the penny slots. She always wins, and likes doing it because she can just play on those for a while, and if you give the waitress a few dollars, she'll make sure to always be around to get you something else.

I got back from Vegas 3 days ago, and you DEFINITELY should go to O'Sheas. They have live music every night and it's always good. One nice thing about the casinos is that you can get super cheap drinks. The best way to accomplish this (as cheaply as possible) is watch where the waitresses are at, then find a penny slot machine in front of where they are going and play the machine a penny a spin. I got both beer and mixed drinks regularly for less than a quarter.
As far as a good place to stay, that really depends on how much time you actually think you'll be in your room. My wife and I were only in our room to sleep at night. Period. We rarely spent more than a few minutes there. We stayed at Imperial Palace, and while it's not super nice, you can get a really good deal on a room there and it's in the center of the strip, which is nice if you plan on walking up and down the strip. I'd definitely recommend it for first timers that plan on sight-seeing. You'll also want to take the bus down to Freemont Street at night. That's where the old casinos are at, and there is a SWEET light show at night that I can only describe as awesome.
