How do I get this infrared shutter release to work? [SOLVED]

I have a Rebel XTi. I bought a wireless infrared shutter release, that the camera store told me would be compatible with my camera. I can't seem to get it to work, is there anything special I have to do? Did I just get a dud? Does my camera not have infrared and I just don't know it?

Maybe I just got a dud, but I really want this thing to work. I don't want to have to drive back to the store(out of town) and return it this weekend.

This is the shutter release if it matters. I didn't pay nearly that much for it though.

I have the same camera but a different remote and I know with my IR remote the camera has to be in timer mode. I don't have it here to look at it, but it's the mode setting with single shot, continuous shooting, and timer. Should be one of the settings tied to the d-pad.

Hopefully this is obvious, but the IR sensor is on the front, so it's not going to work if you're behind the camera.
