University, Sociology, and money.

I am a college bound high school senior, and I have three questions (I’ll try to make it short).

uno

My three main choices for college are UNLV (I live in Las Vegas, so its mainly because of cost), UCSB, and Berkeley. I have excellent grades, etcetc, so I’m not really worried about acceptance. I’m just not sure which one to choose (I’m majoring in sociology btw). UNLV is great because of the cost. I hear UCSB is a really nice school. And I’m considering Berkeley because I hear it has a great sociology program. Should I take the hit financially and go to one of the UC schools? I just don’t want to pass up a good school because of cost, because UNLV is definitely lower on the proverbial totem pole than the others.

As you have read, I plan on majoring in Sociology. Can someone give me some general career choices after college? I know about the obvious ones, like criminology, business, and government work, but does anyone know of a job that would use sociology and is…out of the box? Not common? Also, what would be the best career choice that uses sociology, in terms of competition and pay?

tres

Lastly, I’m going on a trip to Mexico during summer with a group of seniors (going with a company called GradWeek) that’s kind of a last hurrah. I never was one to party, but I really want to do this to hang out with friends and seeing the amazing scenery, but also to be like a guardian. I know many attractive girls that are going that I’m relatively good friends with. I’m not comfortable with the security that GradWeek will supply, so I just want to be there to be the guy that’s not drunk and kind of watching out for everyone…you know, not letting them leave with strangers while shitfaced, etc. Because of slacking and other reasons I don’t want to get into, I still need 900 dollars and the money is due in exactly one week. I’ve worked out a deal with my mother that if I can get a job in one week, she’ll loan me the money, which is awesome. I’m applying like crazy, but are there any non-traditional jobs that I could look into? Jobs that hire quickly? Or is there a legal way to get one thousand dollars in one week (which I really doubt) outside of loans?

Thanks.

Berkley has been considered one of the pinnacle schools for Sociology... especially the Criminal Justice aspect. Just throwing that out there.

To build on Sentry's point, the department is well-respected enough that when you go on to grad school or go out to the working world, you'll be in a much better position to network yourself into a good position somewhere.

Sociology can play pretty well in the political arena if you also know statistics--specifically I'm thinking of polling. Economics is also starting to incorporate a lot more of the other "soft sciences" into it--more specifically psychology and political science, but I'm sure there's an economics grad school out there that's also bringing in sociology.

On jobs: look into the local casinos/hotel industry for some part time summer jobs if you're in Vegas. Being a hotel front desk manager was my first job as a first-year college student.

UNLV alumnus here, I doubt you're going to find anything Casino related for a while, the industry is going through a bit of a slump as I'm sure you know.

If you're looking for something 'out of the box', have you considered the Military? Plenty of interesting career options there and Sociology would be useful for being an officer.

Good luck finding any sort of job in a week. Might look into going with a temp agency for a while, they might be able to find you something to do in short notice.
