So, its been a long, long time since I've bought a new game for my DS and I'm longing for an RPG.
Now, I'm a complete BioWare whore so I'm quite interested in Sonic and the Dark Brotherhood. Any recommendations for that particular game? If it has the same BioWare RPG feel than the other games?
How about Dragon Quest V? I'm really looking for recent games which would be readily available at a local EB Games or FutureShop or what have you... I've just been out of the loop when it comes to the DS so I'm going to PA for a good opinion/idea of what kind of RPG to buy.
Sonic is pretty fucking awful. Probably the worst game Bioware has ever made.
If you're down with more "old school" RPGs, than yes, DQV is a good purchase (as is DQIV). FFIV is also pretty awesome. For your strategy RPG fix (assuming you like those), FFTA2 is another good grab.
If you like things more modern and varied, give The World Ends With You a shot, as that's pretty awesome and nothing like any of the other RPGs on the system.
Dragon Quest is old school. Etrian Odyssey is older school. When people say you'll only like it if you hate yourself, they really aren't kidding, it's a tough one. Dragon Quest is just classic JRPG fun.
I loved DQ4, 5 and EO though, so I would recommend all of them. If you're into monster collecting/breeding (and... especially if you don't really like Pokemon and are familiar with Dragon Quest), Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is great fun too.

The World Ends with You is a very unique and good game. The story starts off ass dragging slow, but after a few ingames days it really picks up the pace and you'll find yourself playing for hours on end. Defiantly the best SquareEnix game since....well since they combined.
Though I think Jupiter were the ones who made the game, so SE can, once again, go fuck themselves.
Etrian Oddyssey... I've actually always wanted to buy that game. It's kind of old now, I think? 2 years? I hope my local EB has a copy.
There is absolutely nothing to do in the Etrian Odyssey series except grind. The objective of the game is to grind for a few hours so that you can move up a floor and grind on the monsters there. If you enjoy that sort of repetition, Etrian Odyssey will keep you grinding for weeks. If not, the game has absolutely nothing going for it.
I don't think I could have stood 150+ hours of six identical units using the same attack until everything falls down dead. Typically in a single round of combat.

It's gonna get boring if you make every unit a duel wielding Parivir. You gotta make it fun.

I only consider fighting battles "grinding" if I'm running around in a circle right next to the door to town. EO has 25 floors' worth of maps to make and battles to fight, and something about it appeals to me. It's kind of a junk-food RPG: almost no story or character interaction, just stats, gear, equipment to find and make, skills to learn and abuse. I love it.
For the OP, it depends on what other kinds of RPGs you like. If you like 8-bit or 16-bit era JRPGs, the DS has a slew of them. I'd say Dragon Quest IV is my favorite, though a lot of that is nostalgia. And if you want something more modern and skewed to the system, The World Ends With You was excellent.

It also has pretty much the worst storytelling and characterization of any game with "Final Fantasy" in the title - and that's saying something.
Guild and character customization is pretty deep though, if needlessly time consuming, so it's good for the spreadsheet enthusiasts and strategy trailblazers.
And although TWEWY deserves a few quarts of the buckets came over it, the game does have its flaws. The combat system isn't so much good as creative, and the artistic direction (musical and graphical) can come off as offensively Japanese if that's not your thing. The game is well worth the money though, boasting a fun story and some of the best post-game content you'll find on any system. The stat management (namely the pin system) is nothing short of kickawesome.

That's true. I'd consider a game like Dragon Warrior to be pure grinding, EO is quite a bit better. You're exploring and mapping as you grind, finding chests, making enemy parts into new equipment, agonizing over where to put your ability points, generating new characters...it's fairly meaty.
The World Ends with You is a modern RPG masterpiece, in my opinion. The only thing that should turn you off is if you really, really, really hate J-Pop. And even then it's there to complete the atmosphere, which it does marvelously. Probably the best thing about the game is that the control mechanics, level-up system and the sheer variety of Pins give it the most enjoyable grind of any RPG in history.
And FFTA2 is surprisingly uncompelling due to terrible storytelling, boring characters and the fact that it's just stupidly easy. There is no difficulty at all.
EDIT: Partly beaten by Falstaff, though not in full agreement.

The World Ends With You....get it...love it...live it.
+1 for TWEWY, DQ4/5, FF III/IV and FFTA2 and especially EO I/II.
I wouldn't recommend Contact (though the quirky humor/setting is awesome, the game is incredibly boring), M&L: Partners in Time (the original is infinitely better than this baby infested bore).
Stay FAR away, from Lunar: Dragon Song and Magical Starsign. They will give you herpes. True story.
I may be in the extreme minority here, but I really just didn't like TWEWY. I think I put about 12-15 hours into it, and for whatever reason, it just didn't click. I thought the touch-screen part of combat was really inaccurate and the badge system, while original, kinda fell flat. I had about 150,000 badges and I really only needed to use 2 or 3 of them with any regularity.
The music and style were both great I thought, the story seemed like it was going places, but the game felt a little bit like it was getting in the way.
Haha, now that I think about it, if I booted it up now, I'd have about 7 months of "downtime exp" to gain. That might be interesting.

Whew, seems like The World Ends is leading the pack here...
I think I might pass on EO now if it really is a grind simulator... DQ V seems like a pretty good choice, too.
For the most part I love 16-bit SNES RPGs; I already have Chrono Trigger on the PS1 so I'm not interested in getting the DS port just yet.
One thing that's always put me off from TWEWY was reading about the combat system, I'd much rather have a traditional button'ed battle styme rather than something which relies on the touchscreen.
I'm currently going through DQV. I played DQIV just beforehand and I don't know if it's because I'm playing them too quickly in sequence but I'm having a lot of trouble getting into DQV. In my opinion, if you're really into SNES RPGs I'd recommend DQIV over V because it's more "typical".
Also I found the Final Fantasy IV remake fantastic. It seems to have a love/hate thing around here but I absolutely loved the voice acting and seeing all the cut scenes in 3D.
Enjoy!

These games will make your testicles drop.
Etrian Odyssey is fun if you hate yourself
and the dragon quest titles are fun for some old school JRPG goodness
It does not, and knowing Namco, will not ever.
Dammit.
No contest.
I never asked for this!
Buy all of them.
Etrian Odyssey 2 is pretty good, but a little more niche.

I'd recommend it if that's something you can get behind. You can tell the developers had a lot of ambition, but the execution is just not there.
It does have an incredible ending though.
Edit- If we are doing anti-recommends, stay away from Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth Remix. It's probably one of the worst games I have ever played.
