I installed morrowind Comes alive, I decided to explore a tomb and found a zombie there named Eric the rotten. We are good friends now and even though he won't let me bang him (though he does offer a substitute for a necrophilic romp), he is quite handy in a fight, almost to the point of cheating.
If I installed Morrowind comes Alive now would it ruin my save game? I really like the sound of this mod.
Good news! It works with an old save. Problem is I get hostiles in every dungeon. darn.
Actually the only thing that does take a massive chunk out of fps is having the reflections on in water, getting rid of that gives you a huge boost in performance.
I gained 30 FPS outside by removing animated grass. YMMV, but it helped me out a good deal.
Really? Am I missing something here or was oblivions engine a modified morrowind engine? Even if that's the case, it's clearly so heavily modified that it may as well be brand new, at least in terms of visuals if not dialogue/scripting systems or whatnot.
No, they didn't use the same engine. According to my good friend Wikipedia, Oblivion used Gamebryo, and Morrowind used NetImmerse. Gamebryo is the successor to NetImmerse and shares code with it, but it's not the exact same engine.
...Dura Gra-Bol's house in Balmora. She only exists to die for a Fighter's Guild quest, so you're safe to kill her and take her house as your own any time, even if you don't join the guild. It's a lot roomier (three floors) and has a lot more storage, and is a bit more conveniently placed in Balmora, rather than Seyda Neen.
If I kill Dura Gra-Bol to get her house before I get the Fighter's Guild quest, can I then get the quest later and complete it without any problems?
I always just take over Hlaalo Manor. The guy who owns it may just be dead from the beginning of the game, but if not there are early quests in both Theives Guild and Hlaalu that trigger his murder.

Yep. I've done the Fighter's Guild quest after killing Dura before, and you simply turn around and tell them she's dead, and it's done. I think the only place pre-killing really really matters is with the Morag Tong, since you get reduced rewards for "anticipating the Morag Tong".

The rewards from the Morag Tong aren't that much anyway.
Pff, I take great pride in that +10 disposition increase to an NPC that has been capped at 100 since before I met them, thank you very much.
Also I never ever knew that sneak attack damage worked with Marksman weapons in Morrowind. Makes me wonder why everyone thought Marksman was gimp way back in the day.

2 weapons mods that I always install now are assassin's armory and marksmen. The designers didn't leave a fuckton of epic weapons in the world, they decided to put them in reasonable places, meaning that if you want some mystical crap, you need to dive deep into dungeons and dwermer monoliths to get them.
There are several infinite items in the Intelligista's marksmen mod that are hidden and require a lot of skill to get, I remember the infinite arrows being somewhere along the main quest and the infinite arrows somewhere guarded in Ebonheart.
One of my early playthroughs a number of years ago involved an infinite throwing hammer, the dragon helm, a dragon skinned cuirasse, levitation from the vivec shrine, and a cape from morrowind comes alive. I flew through Soltheim and declared myself the Nord God of thunder. You want fun, try flying through the air and leveling hammer after thundering hammer at the ground.
edit: I should mention that my character that tried to bang the zombie companion was a female harlot that would bang anything on two legs, man or mer, for a few septiems. Sadly, a diplomatic character cannot get far in the game.

Because you needed to hit first, and a starting marksman couldn't hit his own foot.

I used to use the Marksman mod a lot back in the day, but I've been hearing that it conflicts with a lot of stuff and is very crashy nowadays.
I also didn't even think to install Assassin's Armory, even though I'm playing a thief character. Is AA savegame compatible?

Okay, I used Assassin's Armory for a bit, and I just have to disable it. Not only are a lot of the weapons it adds incredibly overpowered (Glass wakizashis that can be readily bought from shops and are stronger than any Daedric short blade? Riiiiight.), but it's introduced so many crashes. Even using the additional .esp to reduce the amount of scripts the mod uses, I still crash with it just moving from one part of a single cell to another. So, off it goes.
I just hope taking it back out doesn't adversely affect any leveled lists.

If I buy a house and throw crap in it (or neatly place things on the table, whichever), what happens when I buy one of those fancy upgrades from the people in the town?
...I don't recall having the upgrading option before, so maybe it's a mod (or maybe the Anvil house doesn't let you upgrade). It seems like it might end up throwing your crap all over your house, deleting things or only adding decorative things to the walls.

I believe, in the case of the Anvil house at least, that your stuff goes poof if you complete the quest while you have stuff stored in it.
In fact, according to the UESP for the Anvil house:
The overturned chest of drawers by the entrance has its contents reset when you complete this quest. It's best not to store anything anywhere inside the house until the quest is completed.

I'm grabbing better bodies, and a hi-rez face pack. But I have a list of other desires.
-An awesome interior/exterior texture pack
-Oblivion-style blocking mods
-A mod that allows NPCs to pursue me from cell to cell
-And any other awesome recommendations

There is only one Oblivion-style blocking mod that I'm aware of, and it's Aerlorn's Blocking Enhanced. You'll need to download his Morrowind Enhanced utility for it.
There are so many dozens of texture packs changing things from the skybox to the landscape to the individual ceramic bowls in each house that I wouldn't even begin to know what to recommend. Never mind that far too many of the things are uploaded to TESNexus/PES without screenshots. I don't give a texture mod a second glance if it has no screenshots. Hence I don't download much from Elric M.'s place unless I have already used a thing before and know what it is.
And as far as I'm aware, there's no way to make NPCs chase you from cell to cell. Having an idea of Morrowind's limitations, such a mod would likely make the thing crash every fifteen seconds.
For general mod recommendations? Can always try perusing Telesphoros' tried and true list.

My problem with texture packs is that I can never find good and complete ones for Tribunal and Bloodmoon. The base game texture packs especially Qarls are really good, it's a shame he/she hasn't done the expansion assets.
A mod that allows NPCs to pursue me from cell to cell
I think you want Pursuit Enhanced. I used it for awhile but when I uninstalled and reinstalled I forgot to install it again. It makes up to 6 NPCs/Creatures follow you through doors and it actually makes the lock spell useful. NPCs wont be able to follow you through unless they have some security skill. I think you need the Morrowind Script Extender for it to work.

What are you using with the mod that could generate so many crashes?

Glass wakizashis (as well as their parrying blades, glass katanas, dai-katanas, wrist scythes, and more) I found at Ralen Tilver's shop in the Vivec foreign quarter plaza. They're also (along with other stuff like a really powerful scythe) at the actual Armory store itself in the Morag Tong guildhall in Vivec.
I'm not sure what all I could be using with AA that could cause so many crashes, since I run relatively mod-light. AA was the only thing I had that affected loot leveled lists like it does, and if anything, it conflicts with Galsiah's Character Development mod, with the offhand weapons and all the scripting they use.
All I know is that now that I disabled AA and used Wrye Bash to make sure the leveled lists were correct again, I have yet to crash.

since I have the mod that makes the final encounter more interesting and makes him look better (from what i read anyway).

Yay, just finished all the Morag Tong quests save for Threads of the Webspinner, which I'm currently 18/26 on anyway. The run through Ald Sotha got me tons of awesome loot including two Ebony Broadswords, three(!) Daedric Tantos, an Ebony Shield, a Glass Longsword, and even a Daedric Claymore from the Dremora Lord that got summoned from a cursed item on the altar.
Just need another level or two for Golden Saints to start appearing in the leveled lists and I'm off to finally start doing some enchanting so I can reliably sell all of that junk.

Works for me with the latest version (.9.4.a). You need both expansions and I would probably start a new game to avoid the slight chance you might get some save game corruption.

Question: is there any reason not to use scrolls in Oblivion? I've keeping them around in the hopes of discovering a way to memorize them or something (why else would there be a difference between scrolls and potions?), but if there's no point to it...
scrolls let you cast magic that you normally would have to learn. some help you, but it seems like most are for offensive abilities (unlike potions). and no you can't memorize them. if you have the Spell Tomes DLC however, it adds books to the game that teach you spells.
I've been avidly reading this thread and the last one, and decided to finally take the plunge into the Elder Scrolls series! Morrowind GOTY for PC is winding its way to me via Goozex, and I'm really looking forward to spending some quality time wtih it.
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to start with plugins/mods right off, or would be it better to just play through the vanilla version first to get a better handle on the game? A lot of the plugins look really cool, and I'm thinking that I'll mess around and try them on a 2nd playthrough (and beyond.) Would you guys consider any of the plugins essential even for a first run through?
Thanks for any input! This thread has been a wealth of information already.
I consider the Less Generic NPC mods to be essential. They basically take a bunch of npc's in various towns who in the original version have absolutely NOTHING interesting to say, and give them unique dialogue. It's one mod per town though, so there's like...8 of them, or so.
Also the morrowind graphical extender. You NEED far landscape, even if you turn nothing else on.
Everything else I would put up to personal preference. I have one that adds higher res textures, along with one that makes the texture edges line up better. Better heads/bodies make it prettier, which you may or may not care about. I also have Galsiah's Character Development which I like, but apparently others are not as fond of - which greatly simplifies the character progression, so you don't need to worry as much about using the right skills at the right levels.
MGE is good, but i wouldn't say you NEED the far landscape. especially first time through, since it kinda spoils you by being able to see shit that far away. its kinda fun creeping through the fog (unlike oblivion where it makes sense to be able to see across the world from the top of a mountain when its sunny out). but overall MGE is pretty nice and the far views are neat.
