I got Oblivion PC and wanna play it, but:

no DVD drive to install it on. My son managed to ruin mine by shoving a bunch of coins in there. I think it gapped a circuit or something, because it simply won't read discs, or even acknowledge that one is in there. Not DVD's, or CD's.

Of course, I intend to replace the drive in the near future. But before I do that, I'm curious if anyone might have any ideas as to what's wrong with it. Like I said, it opens, closes, the computer sees it, but it pretends like it's empty all the time (like my ex g/f :|).

Are there any legit places to download it once I have a copy? I'm guessing no, since there doesn't appear to be a key code with it.

also:

I've checked into a few of the threads, but I'm curious what would be the most basic mods to start off with for Oblivion (plus Shivering Isles), since I've never played it. The level scaling thing sounds terribad, so the mod to fix that is on my list. Anything that keeps the basic game intact, but expands on it is good. Also, any suggestions for a decent mod manager so I could easily pick a save with mods already loaded in it without having to selectively turn mods on and off would also be nice, as I remember hearing about a zombie mod, and zombie's are awesome.

No way to fix that, though you can pull it apart and use those coins to pick up a very cheap DVD drive from anywhere. I don't really know about mods for it either, though the UI fixing ones are very needed

Do you have computers networked at your house at all? If so you can get around not having a drive by using a DVD drive on one of the other computers in your house.

Well, I already managed to pull out all the coins. The thing was actually jammed shut when I first found out about it, and I had to pull it out and shake the coins around a bit to get them all out. I wouldn't think the shaking would be enough to ruin it, but I guess it's possible.

I might open it and peek around. Don't know much about electronics, but at this point, what do I have to lose? Maybe a coin is just jammed in there and preventing the laser from moving. Doesn't make any sounds though.

    edit:

One room mate has a laptop, and the other two have macs. The windows laptop is having some issues with the DVD drive too though, some Vista configuration issue. I guess I could take that route though once it's fixed. Any clue if Oblivion needs the disc to play? Are methods of circumventing that need frowned upon here?

No, but you could have bought it from direct2drive; I really like them and the service doesn't have to be running once you activate the game, unlike steam, where an outage last night screwed me from playing both TF2 and DoW2.

Well, I snagged it from the recent gogamer.com deal someone pointed out to me. I was already planning to get the game eventually, but both the game and the expansion for less than twenty bucks? I jumped on that deal.

*scratches his head* Try the code on Steam, aside of that the obvious not so clean solutions remain - you have payed for it i assume, it kinda would be more like a workaround than actually piracy in this case. It would violate forum rules to direct you so i won't do it. But i am sure its not that hard to find. Developers want their money and you payed, i guess they couldn't care less how you transfer it to your PC or from what source.

I've actually attempted that in the past, it doesn't work. Or it didn't for the game I was trying to play, but I couldn't tell you specifically which one it was. Odds are, it keeps trying to insist you put a disc in the drive.

That simplifies it. If you got that far all you need is a no-disc executable. My brother had the same problem (no drive) and that was our solution for almost two years. But be careful - those can contain nasty malware sometimes.

I recommend at least installing&running Avira and Spybot before attempting anything (both free).

Yeah, easiest way would to dump the iso on another computer then mount the iso with daemon tools (Virtual drive) on your computer.

That should also work but takes up the size of a complete disk image. Its the safer way for sure.

Yeah, stick with the daemon tools plan. And let's not go any further down the route of discussing "no cd" exe files.

Hate to be a party pooper but let's stay on the safe side of the rules.

Fair enough. I'll probably just wait until I get a new drive. My old computer has one, but I'm pretty sure it's broken, so I haven't bothered. Maybe I'll give it a shot... couldn't hurt more than some lost time.

I've waited this long to play the game, what's another week or two at worst? Thanks for the suggestions.

or just install the drive from that computer. It only takes 1 minute to switch drives.

The computer build thread in the hardware forum has a link to newegg, get a decent DVD burner for $25. Best deal I know of for such a drive.
