Disorder of Written Expression...anyone?

Well I came to HA for help about my grammar and I got good feedback but now I am to the point there is something wrong with my brain and writing. I always had writing issues mostly with grammar and sentence structure. Trust me I have taken any advice to improve my writing (I mean anything).

So I decided to investigate about Disorder of Written Experession to see if there are others like me. My symptoms, I tell people I feel the same way someone who has dyslexia with reading. If someone gave me two essays one being grammatically incorrect and another properly written, I would not be able to tell.

So in conclusion, does anyone have similar experience, know something about this(you psych peeps) and/or know a reputable foundation that focuses on learning disabilities I may contact to maybe get some help.

I am in a similar boat. I am just downright terrible with Grammar. I would indeed not be able to pick the Grammatically Correct Essay from one with terrible grammar. I think that I may have problems just because the teachers throughout my life never really taught it. All my English teachers had us read books, and respond to that but grammar was never a big priority.

Yeah I been researching students who where put in ESL that knew English as adults struggle with comprehension issues because they did not develop one language or the other. How did you overcome this problem? I just wish there is some organization I begin a dialogue to figure this out.

What, exactly, do you both mean by grammar? Do you mean that you have issues with things like subject-verb agreement? Do you have issues with really general things like sentence patterns and what components are necessary for forming a complete sentence?

I teach college English, including the occasional basic writing course, so I can probably help you both out if you're willing to elaborate. You should both feel free to send me a PM and explain exactly what your issues are.

As someone who has the condition I'd say there is a chance but you really should try and get a educational psychologist report. From there you can get some help, there's different varying kinds of 'dyslexia' each with there own quirks.

It sounds like dyslexia - it doesn't just affect reading ability, it can also affect sentence construction, spelling, understanding grammar rules. Is there any difference in the way you can write as opposed to type? Typing slows you down, and dyslexics sometimes find using a keyboard instead of pen/paper helps. here's a few links that might help - British Dyslexia Association (free test!), Dyslexia Action, and Dyslexia UK. I have used the BDA to have both children and adults tested, the report and feedback were very helpful.
