Super Slow XP Shutdown

When I shut down XP by clicking "Turn Off Computer" in the start menu, it takes 3-4 minutes to bring up the dialog box with my shutdown options, locking up my machine with an hour glass. Once I click shut down, it takes another 2-3 minutes to leave the desktop and then spends roughly 5 minutes on the "You computer is shutting down" screen.
I've had this problem on my Boot Camp partition of XP since I installed it and I used to assume it was just a problem with Boot Camp. However, I'm back home for spring break and my old eMachine is exhibiting this behavior as well.
Any idea of what is causing this?

Not particularly. On the Bootcamp machine I think I only have AIM, Office, and MATLAB installed
The HDD light isn't on when the machine is waiting. It's almost like there is a wait time programed in.
