[Wii] FF:CC:Crystal Bearers (02/04 Update)

cubelovercubelover Registered User regular
edited September 2009 in Games and Technology
Square has re-launched the Crystal Bearers website with a bit of a twist: the more hits, the more movies are unlocked! They've posted the trailer that was included with the Japanese version of Echoes of Time, and some wallpaper. Two more movies are currently greyed out, just waiting to be unlocked...

Sometimes I feel like Square Enix and Nintendo are the only two companies who know how to tap into the Wii's secret third GameCube. Graphically, the game looks amazing.

I think the whole Crystal Chronicles subset of Final Fantasy is starting to really get clunky with subtitles, though. FF:CC:TCB?

So remember when everyone was like "Hey this game is never gonna come out". I'm very happy they were wrong, as this game has been sitting pretty high on my want list for quite some time now. I guess there's quite a bit of a wait ahead still though.

er...i dunno. it sure doesn't look bad by any stretch of the imagination. I'd go so far as to say it looks quite good, but there's nothing there that we didn't see on the ps2.

Then again, maybe I'm remembering last gen as being better looking than it actually was.

You are. At least in terms of what the PS2 was capable of producing. You think that video doesn't look any better than GoW or GT4?

yea, but keep in mind 12 came out when people figured out what the PS2 could do/push to be done.

it is still relatively early in the wiis life span that games are just starting to look amazing. since the technology is starting to be pushed/ people are caring enough besides ooh waggle

of course that is the stock answer for wii graphics

Couldn't this just go in the final fantasy mega-thread? Rather then creating yet another thread that will ultimately have little discussion because we know absolutely nothing at this point? =P

Some people don't want to wade through two pages of "Aeris vs. Aerith" just to check and see if there's actual new news available. :P The rules have apparently been loosened, but megathreads were banned a while ago for this specific reason.

Let's put it this way; I get excited when more Wii games aesthetically look better than high-end PS2 games. SE has almost always pushed the tech of whatever system they're working on—their stuff on the DS and PSP look great—and it'll be even better if we can get more top-flight action-adventure games on the Wii, like this is looking like it's becoming. Like some people have said, almost Zelda-ish.

Fair enough. I think things loosened up after the political mega-threads over in D&D last year. Perhaps turn this into a general Crystal chronicles thread? That way I can use it to find people to play echoes of time with next week >.>

Keep in mind that it's mostly just SE that does this. What were the most amazing-looking PS2 games? Sony-published games, and FFXII.

What are the best looking DS games? Nintendo and SE games.

The pattern continues on the Wii. SE seems to have some magic wand they use to pull extra power out of these machines that no one else bothers to.

The Wii is very similar to the Gamecube in Architecture, so developers already had about 8 years to figure out how to harness the thing. Yet most games end up looking worse than SSBM or Rogue Leader, games that came out at launch. I'm pretty sure it's more about laziness than it is about hidden programming tricks

Laziness and the fact that Wii is an oportunity to launch games on 2 other consoles at the same time i.e. PS2 and PSP.

The Factor 5 programmers were apparently really smart, if what I read from Wikipedia is to be believed. Their past work in N64 Star Wars titles had them writing custom microcode to milk every last drop of graphical processing power from the plucky little console. [edit] Actually I think I got the info from somewhere else, as the Wiki pages doesn't seem to describe how they managed to get such good graphics on the N64. Shit, wish I remembered the article...

As for this game... why no true sequel to the original GC CC huh, Square, whyyy? :(

Echoes of Time does not count, the Wii version looks like a fucking joke.

Isn't the Wii version the same as the DS version? I mean, the DS seems like a better choice for that sort of game anyways.

How is stacking spells working for you? Me and my gaming friends have enough trouble as it is. Once you pull off a lvl. 3 spell however, it feels like the most satisfying thing ever.

Darklord looks pretty fucking badass. Looks more like a defend your castle type deal which'll be a nice change from My Life as a King. Might be worth doing as an FF:CC spinoff side, as we're going to be seeing a lot of FF:CC news over the coming months and we can do some Game On stuff with the other FF:CC titles already around...

Also, I love Kumi Tanioka. What a great composer. <3

We stack spells pretty easily since it seems to just set off the spells when the first person chooses to cast, so she just holds hers in place and waits for me.

Echoes of Time is a pretty good game, I'd say the best in the Crystal Chronicles franchise so far. I beat it yesterday, the story was kind of rushed and somewhat poorly translated. But the dungeons themselves are really well designed. Has moderately difficult puzzle elements, but none of them frustrating to solve. This helps when playing co-op to keep a steady pace so the players doesn't lose interest.

My biggest complaint though is it's online system. This is pretty much how all the other Nintendo games work but it's still frustrating to experience. You either play with people you know or play with anonymous people. For 90% of people that wants to play this online you'll choose anonymous mode. This means the only way to communicate with these players is by predetermined macros, like "Yes" or "Follow Me". If you play with someone you like, you can add them to your friends list. But it is pointless because there is no way to tell them to join your game or schedule a time for you guys to play with each other. Basically you play with one person and you'll never see them again.

I wish it would say something like "Your friend is online and in a game right now, would you like to join?" when you first connect to Nintendo WFC.

On Echoes of Time: you can play online with people? For some reason I thought it was just local.

Regardless, the way EoT looks is borderline unacceptable, and the reviews I've read say that the pointing controls are clunky. S-E should have figured out how to make the game have actual non-DS graphics and created a control system that worked for the Wii.

Maybe I'll buy it when it gets down to the $20 range...

The Wii controls are far better then the DS cause its easier to lock in a direction on the 8-way hat then on the D-pad cause the most common directions you need are diagonals, especially on tricky jumps. Hence why I just pick up the wife and jump with her cause with her on the DS she's got no prayer.

the problem with EoT for me is that i have no friends who are interested in the game and i have absolutely no interest of playing the game with some random jerk that already knows everything and just wants to grind, spoiling all the puzzle fun...
so i guess ill have to pass on this one.
