This is pretty much in concert with all their other interpretations of PS3 patches and updates. Fantastical.
For a breakdown on the actual function of the chat rooms, they persist in and out of games and in the XMB and you can leave your in-game XMB at the chat screen unlike messaging where you have to back out to your friends list so that it's extremely easy to toggle between a game and the chat room. Any line transmitted to you in the chat will show up as a notification in the same area where you see trophy/friend notifications (upper right hand corner) with the full text of that line.
The caveat is that one line of chat is limited to 32 characters. It's almost impossible to type real sentences. I'm sure this is due to some dumb XMB notification limitation and will probably be the biggest complaint you'll hear about this useful addition to the PS3's somewhat aloof community services. Oh it also has a word filter. I'm not sure if they added options in the XMB to edit your chat preferences to remove it and I'm too lazy to go back to check, but it censors wonderful words like fuck, twit and fica (?) but leaves wang hanging out there uncensored in all its glory.
TLDR Sony hands fans individual ladder rungs every update, 3.00 will give us duct tape and "Building Ladders for Dummies" book.

scsscs is my favorite new comic poster
Also this comic is okay because of the last panel, but it is not as funny as usual
If they didn't give away the punchline in the first panel really weakly this would be better.
I mean, I get the joke of regression, but when the first panel is HAHA THIS IS AN OLD IDEA the next two panels are just rehashing the joke.
Come to think of it, were I to rewrite the comic, the dialogue would be optimistic throughout. Cut out the "Back to the eighties" shit in the first panel. Replace it with PR speak of "Looking forwards" or something with the actual joke part being that they're using outdated stuff and claiming it's new.

Well, they are trumpeting the update much more than they should be. It's text chat. Yes, it's nice, but it's clunky and bolted on (32 characters? What?), and to be honest, I don't really want it. The only good thing about it is it could be another step towards cross-game chat and invites. That's what'll really tie to experience together.

no one should ever make new comic threads ever unless it is scsscs

i mean it's very useful for people like me who have no interest in setting up a headset for a quick multiplayer round of whatever
Of the new update, the coolest little feature I like is the Internet Search. Go to any game on your XMB (or even a demo), press Triangle, and you have a new option, Internet search. It'll automatically Google the game title and give you a page of results, which would be pretty cool if, say, I played a demo and wanted to check more content out for it, maybe some videos, screenshots, etc.
I think we are missing one important detail in this negativity-fest.
Have you noticed what a sweet-looking hawk that is in panel 2? Guy is awesome.
edit: Well I'm late. I just read the first page and assumed the second page didn't have any mention of the awesome hawk. Now it appears I was wrong about three times.

Yeah, it kind of does, now that you point it out.
Is it much like Double Jeopardy except you can only go to hell once?
Satans..... hints.....

My bold Monday prediction: Four panels
Also, solid comic.
I mean, better than nothing, but yeah.
PENNY ARCADE: GOING DOWNHILL FOR MONTHS?
Hence I like this comic.

Legin is off sick today, he sprained his wrist trying to pull open a push door for fifteen minutes solid.
Khavali's filling in for him.
Hey, Dru, remember that one time we telegraphed those Joyce letters just to fuck with the 'graph operator?
Good times.
Now I'm going to pout.
