"Twilight" is the second single from the album Time by the band Electric Light Orchestra, also known by the acronym ELO.
"Twilight" was, at the time of its release, not particularly popular in the United States or the UK. However, the song gained cult status within Japan when the song was used in a short film known as
DAICON Film or DAICON IV. The animated short was shown at the 1983 Nihon SF Taikai convention.
Here is a remastered version of the DAICON IV animation, as well as it prequel, DAICON III:
DAICON III and IV, remastered
Many a nerd and nerdess have spent hours trying to identify the countless sci-fi and fantasy franchises that appear in DAICON IV. There was a Lasedisk containing both DAICON films, but due to copyright issues sorrowing the unauthorized used of "Twlight," it is doubtful this Laserdisk will ever again see the light of day. Alas, all we have are old transfers of the original 8mm films.
DAICON IV was produced by a group of amateur animators who would later go on to found the Gainax animation studio... producer of such awesome shows as FLCL and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, as well as some other emo giant robot show that only dorks and emos like.
"Twilight" was again used in 2005 as the theme for the Japanese Drama "Densha Otoko" (Train Man). (The show itself is based on the Japanese urban legend of the
Train Man.) Contrary to popular rumor, the animated opening sequence was made by the anime studio Gonzo, not Gainax. But, during a magazine interview, the producers at Gonzo did recognize the original short and thank its creators.
"Densha Otoko" Opening
Personally, "Twilight" is probably one of my favorite songs from the 80s, even before I saw the DAICON IV short. So, uh, discuss I guess?

My friend's introduction to anime was this DAICON IV short... now he's all about the giant robots, I hear.
YES I WONDER OH YES I WONDER
IS THIS THE LIFE'S MEANT TO BE?
Yeah, I was kind of took pause before I clicked to enter.
And that slowly creeping horror you felt before reading this thread is why I am a bad, bad person.
Que Shorty's story.
Also, I listen to this song all the time. I watch the Daicon IV opening a lot. I have both the Daicon IV and uncombined version of Twilight on my iPod. I want to do something like the Daicon IV opening some day.
we get an ELO thread and it has to be about Time?

Hey.
Your sig.
in the future i will be able to fuck a computer lady and then a telephone receiver will pop out of her mouth and i will call my bassist and brag about how i just fucked a computer lady while he still fucks regular ladies without a floppy drive under each breast
It is also noticeably better than the opening for Train Man several decades later!
Oh hey, thanks. Does it make you cry manly tears? It does for me. Then again, I cry at lots of stuff. Like the ending of damn near every show featured in that short.
Also, Robcham, I am sorry if I made your asshole spasm in fear.
I'm looking into an animation program. Some stuff might be coming soon, or at least during the forum battle.
Tumblr blargh
not surprised
actually your forum battle against Geebs has a lot of elements that remind me of Daicon IV
@PI: yesssssss, also Perfect Blue
Still, TOM #1 died in probably the coolest way.
OMG Spoilers, jerk!
Millennium Actress is one of my first "artsy" movies and still one of my favorites. The other one was "Run Lola Run."
Also, what was that post about the floppy drive boobs? WTF?
So cool.
Millennium Actress wasn't one of the first artsy movies I ever saw, but it was probably one of the first movies I saw when I started becoming a fan of cinema.

Oh, really? *Searches* So you are correct.
By the way, my dad was a huge fan of 80s ballad rock and the Beach Boys... so yeah kinda got an earful of this stuff when I was a kid. I like some of the really good stuff though. And synths have a special place in my heart.
Also, hey Primus, whatever happened to UNIFIED?
I dunno, ask Pony.
