Basically, I'd like a good general academic sociology textbook, and this is the one that comes up on searches of booklists.
However, it's quite expensive, so I want to know if anyone has used it, read it, or has any opinions on it before I shell out the cash.
Edit: My main concern is that, while I do need an introductory text, I also want something dense and challenging. I'm worried that this might be too shallow and too visual. However, that might be me wanting to run before I can walk.
We used it in my Honors Soc class in high school. It was good and easy to read, and a previous edition was what the teacher had used in college, but...I don't know maybe I just don't like sociology but it just felt like it was stating the obvious and never really went in depth with stuff. It was all common sense, especially if you've taken a decent amount of history besides.
