Need a trusted way of completely removing a program when uninstalling

Hey Guys and Gals

Let me preface this with that I really hate starting threads, because deep in my mind I know this topic has been convered before. But since the search didn't show up anything, here we are:

I have a Vista box that kept showing up a "Softwrap Error3" message, and I mean within minutes this little bugger would have 277 windows popping up. I used MSconfig to turn off all non MS starting programs and turned them back on one at a time. I finally traced the problem by doing that to a P2P program called Manolito (MP2P) and it used this Softwrap DRM crap that was causing this. I have no idea if they guy tried using a ripped copy of this thing or if there was an error. My only concern is to make sure I get this completely removed from the system, and I'm just playing it safe and assuming a simple uninstall will not be enough. Is there any trusted method out there of cleaning the registry or a program that does this? This is a method I rarely mess with. If it's my own, I usually just blow away the OS if it gets bad enough, but this is someone else's computer, so I want to try to fix without a reinstall. However, trying to find some kind of reference only really pops up ads from a million "reg cleaner" programs that God knows what will do to this system.

CCleaner I think can remove unused registry entries. You could also manually (ugh) search the registry for unused keys by using the Find command and looking for the program name.

Other than that your only option is to delete any folders related to the program to make sure everything is gone.

Typically the uninstaller will take care of this. If it is a known issue that it doesn't there would usually be a program available specifically to clean it up.

Usually I just trust uninstallers, but this was a: a program that looked fairly two bit in budget, b: was a p2p sharing program, and c: had (of all things) a freeware DRM (which was causing the issue in the first place). I just uninstalled it and it seems to be fine, and as far as the user goes he'll never know a thing. However I think it's left a slight mark on the system because it's not completely removed from the start up services in msconfig, and shows it has a registry key. I think it's sufficient for now, and if they still have problems I'll dive deeper. I just usually avoid the registries of others since it's so risky, I have backups and don't really mind reinstalling os's that much, but it'd be kind of embarassing to go to a client and go "Hey, I blew up your system hur hur."

After I posted this I started doing some digging, and I'm not sure I'll throw a reg cleaner on someone else's computer. No two parties seemed to agree if these things aren't snake oil, let alone were in agreement if just one was good. Like your suggestion. Some said it was good, but some blasted it, so who am I to trust (I mean no offense, I do put high stock in the opinions of those on this board).
